Driver Rear-Ends Other Driver Who Was Not “Driving Like A Christian”

November 29th, 2008, 11:26 AM EST

Michael Schwab told the police that he rear-ended a woman’s sedan on US 281 in Texas because she was not “driving like a Christian,” and that it was Jesus’ will that she be taken off the road.

“He just said God said she wasn’t driving right, and she needed to be taken off the road,” said Lt. Kyle Coleman of the Bexar County Sheriff’s Office.

[...]

The 35-year-old woman was driving her sedan north when the pickup struck her vehicle. Schwab told deputies he was driving faster than 100 mph at the time, Coleman said.

The impact caused both vehicles to spin across a median before they came to a stop along a barrier in the southbound lanes. No other vehicles were involved.

Though both vehicles were badly damaged, the drivers suffered minor injuries.

“God must have been with them, ’cause any other time, the severity of this crash, it would have been a fatal,” Coleman said.

Authorities determined that the woman did nothing wrong.  Maybe that’s because we have separation of church and state.

  1. Oh my GOD ! What a buffoon, to ? someones driving on faith. I bet he never ? GWB jr. That,s the base of THE GOP as well. Robots without minds.

  2. oookay, so God tells him she wasn’t driving right. I think that says it all, right there. I’m sure this post will disintegrate into a debate on religion but before it does, all I will say is: When man talks to God, it’s called prayer. When God talks to man, it is called SCHIZOPHRENIA !!!

  3. BUDDA ! you have me laughing. That,s a good 1. Seems to me for the location that this man was on a redneck rampage induced with JIM BEAM or LONE STAR BEER.

  4. I call on the government to bail them both out!
    Bailouts for all my friends!

  5. Why is it that people like the pickup driver, whom claims to have heard God telling him to do something deadly to other people or themselves, don’t stop to consider that it might be Satan instructing them? If they believe in God, why not Satan? Wouldn’t Satan be the more likely owner of that voice, according to the Christian world view?

  6. bit off there. tired i be

  7. The Devil made him do it ? Flip Wilson called, he wants his line back WFG

  8. I don,t like the pickup driver. Just questioning his reason WFG. Yes! the devil made him do it on lone star and jim beam.

  9. Actually, Steve, I wasn’t replying to anyone in particular.

  10. Methinks God was talkiing to a drunk.

  11. It gets worse.

“Schwab told first responders at the scene that “the other vehicle was not driving like a Christian and it was Jesus’ will for him to punish the car,“” according to a sheriff’s dept press release.

“Schwab was later charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon…”

  12. This isn’t surprising. God told Bush to invade Iraq. Nuff said.

  14. I’m so confused. God said she was driving wrong, but told him it was okay to drive 100 MPH and break the law? Oh, brother.

In all seriousness, how do people like this man, who want to (or SHOULD want to and are supposed to want to) bring others into the arms of their God (whoever that might be) think that actions like this are going to accomplish that?

Alan, I hope you follow up on this story to see if there’s a psych eval done on this man. I’m serious. I want to know what’s wrong with him.

  17. I think the Bush speaking to God, and vice verse, in the literal sense, claim is one of those stories which can’t be validated or debunked. For example, from the same general source as you gave TRDO, http://www.commondreams.org/views03/0630-04.htm. I bring this up because I had previously looked into the claim, and felt compelled to share the article, out of intellectually honesty as to my own knowledge on the matter, though I admit it might not be the original article I read, which was done quite a while ago.

  18. But the article is older than yours, so more information could have come to light to verify the claim in question.

  19. Okay, WFG, you don’t like that one. How about God told Bush to run for president? And how did that work out for us?
    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2003/nov/02/usa.religion

  20. Get thee to a mental health counselor.

Makes me glad I don’t live in the Bible Belt.

  21. He is a nut to crash his car willfully. The real question here is did he make up this whole “God told me to” story after the fact or was he really convinced she was “driving without Jesus.”
I think it more likely he made it up after the fact to cover his shame of going road rage on some woman cause she flipped him off or cut him off or whatever. However, should it be the latter I would think he has a very screwed up idea of what God wants for us. I can’t think of a time or place in which it was God would instruct you to put everyone in danger for the sake of seeing his will done. Let’s not forget that he hit her at 100mph and it was just luck that no one died or was seriously injured.
Dudes a pyscho is the bottom line. Pysch eval is all well and good but a little time on the inside would do more than sitting on a couch.

  22. Do we need a new driving execution classification?
    DWC = Driving While Christian?

  23. I think I saw that guy at the Republican Convention….well, maybe it was another white nut case….ya know….so many, and only three and half days to remember as many as possible. Perhaps, he was at one the Palin/McCain rallies instead.

  24. The only thing that concerns me about it, is that most people who say they speak with god, aren’t being literal, and I got the sense that Bush wasn’t only being mocked for what he did, but for being spiritual.

In other words, even if a person isn’t the President, making world affecting decisions, I think there are people that would mock him once he said he speaks with god, even though he probably wasn’t being literal. I’m not sure if that warrants mockery, let alone deriviness.

The pickup driver might have been literal, but whether Bush was or not, I don’t know. I’m not against mocking Bush for somethings, but millions of people claim to speak to god in a spiritual sense. That he might well have said he’s been given messages from god to start wars, is terrifying, and a clearly bad testament to his mental health.

Also, I have not heard of the conversation between him and Robinson before, and have not yet looked into the veracity of it, nor am I, to be frank, that interested in trying to debunk or validate everything said by or about Bush, Clinton, whomever. Of course, that means the claim is what it is. But since I don’t offer a challene to it, and recognize that the claims about Bush literally speaking with god, if valid, were made independently by separate persons with no reason to “conspire” to make Bush look bad, they and other stories about the influence of Christianity on Bush, can be considered as part of a plethora of evidence to support the claim that Bush hears voices.

  25. I heard a voice once. I think it said “damn.” So now I go around damning people, animals, lawn chairs, cheese…

  26. Poll: which is scariest, my jokes, my whining about Alan not giving me much attention, or my efforts at being intellectual? Place them in order from least to scariest.

  27. God told me to be cautious of conservatives….God is damn smart.

  28. “Do we need a new driving execution classification?
    DWC = Driving While Christian?”

Include that in a more general catagory: Driving While Stupid.

  29. This had nothing to do with “Christians” anymore than members of Al Qaeda have to do with the general population of Muslims.

Just another example of a one-sided view of one religion. This guy obviously has some mental health issues.

  30. Yeah he is a republican conservative

  31. To all who claim to be Christians,Please read and understand Matthew ch.7,vs 13. Enter through the narrow gate for wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it.Ch. 14—but small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.
Please don’t view real Christians by loking at the actions of some nut jobs like the one in this story.

  34. My meaning, WFG, is that some people use God as an excuse for everything. In Bush’s case, he used God as his excuse to start the war in Iraq.

  35. Actually, I should say people use God to justify their behavior.

  36. “I think there are people that would mock him once he said he speaks with god, even though he probably wasn’t being literal. I’m not sure if that warrants mockery…”

It’s all about context. The man in the pickup appears to be in need of some serious medication. The people who get up on stages in front of thousands of people and proclaim that they know the one true way because God has chosen them to reveal His Divine Truth to the world look to me like megalomaniacs or hucksters. But if it’s someone who lives a life of charity and devotion, and that person says, in all humility, that they’ve had some form of contact with the Almighty, that would be different.

    And I would respect it.

  37. Fair enough, and good points, Rocky and TDRO. Indeed, the whole ‘instructed by god’ excuse could well be BS, with greed as the truth instead.

For me, believing an action to be unecessary and too costly to venture into, is enough. I’m not a mind reader. I don’t know what Bush believes deep down, and such knowledge can’t make right what he’s done in anyway.

  38. So, does the action define the person, or does the person define the action? Maybe they should be judged separately.

  39. Wow, I just thought I’d check out Alan Comes website, and with all that’s going on in the world today, THIS is the lead story!
Oh my God! A nutty Christian! Stop the presses!. Ignore the other (insert millions here) that rather pray for the ignorant drivers ahead of them.

  40. It’s not the lead story, it’s just the top post. It’s set that way by default, as most blogs are. If you make a new post, it goes on top, pushing the next most recent post down. And what is it with people like you thinking you’ve exposed some moral failing in someone, if that person doesn’t cover whatever issue you happen to think is most important? Moreover, if there are a lot of issues that are important, what would prevent you from complaining about the order in which they are addressed? Should world hunger go before or after the global financial crises story? Should a medical breakthrough on AIDs or Type 1 Diabetes get more electronic ink? Oh, do tell, fine, upstanding citizen.

  41. I am sorry WFG,but that guys is nuts.

  42. Good morning Mr. Blair, I found a brief 10 min clip that you might find interesting. I’m curious, what do you think Black Bart would have made of this?

  44. I believe they were relating that we shouldn’t judge all people of religion by the acts of one or two dummies….and you are right…if that dummy is in the White House….that could/would/did have severe consequences for our nation.

  45. Have to think about lots of it’s concepts…..almost feels like anger rising up in the speaker….certainly profound to him….loved the pics of familiar waters…Deception Pass, Mt Rainier…..seems a bit “Old Testement” oriented…
I am a lousy subject for this one. I had to read “To The Agnostic” chapter of the “big book” many times over several years to even accept at the level I do. As I understand my HP (Higher Power), certainly patience and love would be qualities included in holiness…but, omnipotence certainly is there….God is, or is not…no in between.
Certainly not a traffic advisor…I think there are bigger fish to fry for that Guy/Gal/Entity

  46. Kamikazi for the Lord! LMAO

  47. I consider myself to be a Christian, but people like Michael Schwab give Christianity a bad name. He is typical of the phony “Christians” who buy into the greedy televangelists’ idea of Christianity. Schwab probably thinks Peter Popoff’s Miracle Spring Water really is miracle spring water.

  48. Right wing nuts using GOD,guns and a holy drunk. Coming back to this blog and reading post by fellow LIBS just shows how out of touch the extreme right is. God told me to run BUSH said. Run the lady off the road,GOD said. I laugh out loud when i 1st read this, but i notice how serious the Christian right wants to lead us to the gates of hell.

  49. God is in total control.

Guns and the heros of the Revolutionary War are what liberated this land and sent the Brits packing.

How out of touch is the conservatives of this country, Steve?

God does speak to those who are willing to listen. He speaks to us in varying ways.

Because I trust in God and own a few guns makes me an extreme right winger?

I don’t drink. Is that a plus for me Steve?

Christians do not want to lead anyone to hell.

  50. Willy, if “Christians do not want to lead anyone to hell,” then why do “Christians” like you and Trees willfully persist in guerrilla recruitment tactics that only serve to repel people from Christianity every day?

Tactics, like, oh I dunno, defending a violent nutjob who ran a woman off the road because he claims God told him to?

  51. People hear voices and automatically assume it’s God talking to them. Maybe it’s Satan.

  52. Or maybe they are NUTS.

  53. “Or maybe they are NUTS.”

    That’s true.

  54. Just ask yourselves…what kind of person who is a conservative, comes to a site named, “Liberaland” ??
Certainly, they are lookin’ for a fight….
So, when Willy posts that crap….I just remember to consider what his motive is….and take another slurp of coffee…and sigh….then chuckle.

  55. Somehow I picture a Family Guy episode with God sitting around with his buddies saying “See, I told you I could get him to do that.”
