Happiness Is A Warm Gun In A State Park
On its way out of office, the Bush administration has lifted a 25 year, Reagan-era ban on firearms in national parks.

Under a rule to take effect in January, visitors will be able to carry a loaded gun into a park or wildlife refuge — but only if the person has a permit for a concealed weapon and if the state where the park or refuge is located also allows concealed firearms.
Yes, another victory for the NRA.
A group representing park rangers, retirees and conservation organizations said the rule change will lead to confusion for visitors, rangers and other law enforcement agencies.
“Once again, political leaders in the Bush administration have ignored the preferences of the American public by succumbing to political pressure, in this case generated by the National Rifle Association,” said Bill Wade, president of the Coalition of National Park Service Retirees.
“This regulation will put visitors, employees and precious resources of the National Park System at risk. We will do everything possible to overturn it and return to a commonsense approach to guns in national parks that has been working for decades,” Wade said.
It’s ironic how “rule-of-law” conservatives don’t respect the wishes of law enforcement agencies.

Rule of law people will have their permit to carry just like the rule of law instructs them to do. They will also be able to protect themselves if, God forbid, they are attacked as so many law abiding citizens have been…many of them murdered.
Are you suggesting that our 2nd ammendment rights be taken away?
December 8th, 2008 at 11:00 am
I want to go into a nat,l park and any park to feel safe. It,s a place to go to lay back in peace and view the beauty. Now i have to worry about gun weilding buffoons. This is not a place for guns and i am not anti gun. Their should be limits thou.
December 8th, 2008 at 11:15 am
If we arm all the bears, dear, chipmonks, and other woodland creatures….I am all for it…as long as we limit human weapons to under 22 caliber and allow the wildlife to use fully automatic weapons…and explosive devices when warranted.
December 8th, 2008 at 11:33 am
What will happen is some numbskull idot like that truck driver in TEXAS high as a kite and start shooting saying GOD told me to do it. The NRA is a piece of s$*t group that goes well beyound norm of reason.
December 8th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Steve,
You are using an example of an unstable person who would under any circumstances get the weapon he wants. Heck, he could use his truck a knife. YOu gonna outlaw those?
Try explaining to the hikers who have murdered recently that there should be limits. If they would have been carrying a handgun with a legal permit to carry, maybe they would still be here.
December 8th, 2008 at 11:44 am
Is that a big horn ram over there with an Oozy?
December 8th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
This in not in a hardcore section of a city like LA or NEW YORK CITY. Crime rate is very low and low enough not to have guns their. I hope OBAMA overturns this stupid law. I have been to parks and never had a problem. Having guns will cause problems from stupid people like the truck driver and thugs as well.
December 8th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
“Are you suggesting that our 2nd amendment rights be taken away?”
“you are using an example of an unstable person”
Springfield, MA 5dec08: “Three men, including a small-town police chief, were indicted Thursday on involuntary manslaughter counts in the gun-fair death of an 8-year-old who accidentally shot himself in the head with an Uzi…”
December 8th, 2008 at 12:42 pm
I am a gun-owner. Yet I am also an environmental lover…
(some people think that that’s impossible)
I fail to see the reason behind such deregulation. Anybody have a link or something showing the desired result of this law change?
December 8th, 2008 at 1:00 pm
That chipmonk has a grenade!
December 8th, 2008 at 1:28 pm
Nope,i want the 2nd amendment. Just saying you don,t need gun in NAT,L parks. It invites nuts and thugs to carry arms their. This is not the wild west. Fools will go in their firing off a ak47 and hitting someone with a stray bullit. A thug trying to get around the law. To rob someone and be prove they had nothing to with the crime. This law is asking for trouble. People should have the right to bear arms, but good LORD NAT,L PARKS is not a place for them.
December 8th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
Is that ranger being held captive by that Bison? Egads, lad…that bison has a blunderbus! Arm yourselves, protect yourselves ….. the wildlife is out to get you….is that a moose with a 50 cal.?
That muskox is driving a Bradley…..
December 8th, 2008 at 1:33 pm
Who knows when someone will encounter a chipmunk with an AK-47? Americans must protect themselves against armed homicidal animals.
December 8th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
Very good insight ROBERT BLAIR. I need a mac10,it, a big bad moose over there.
December 8th, 2008 at 1:46 pm
This is the typical liberal assault on our basic right to “keep and BEAR arms”.
Robert, Steve, TDRO, and others are claiming that LAW ABIDING GUN OWNERS are going to be hauling assault weapons into our National Parks. This is the most rediculous argument I have ever heard from the anti-gun left. And they use it over and over and over and over. Throw away that broken record.
If you are worried about being assaulted you need not worry about the good citizens who carry. The only ones who you need to worry about are the criminals who already thumb their noses at the law.
I believe that is a good thing that the Bush Adm. has done. At least he believes in me and trusts me as a good upstanding citizen.
December 8th, 2008 at 3:49 pm
About time the ban has been lifted.
December 8th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
Robert, Steve, TDRO, and others that think the same on this topic. Please throw away your broken records.
Law abiding citizens who have concealed carry permits do not carry oozies, AK47’s and such. Gosh, find some credible arguments if you don’t want this ban lifted.
The criminals are the ones you need to worry about. They are going to carry guns no matter what the law says. And even they don’t use oozies or AK47’s. Or 50 Cal.
It is just the simple fact that the Bush Adm. believes in the Second Amendment and he TRUSTS the American people.
December 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pm
OOps!! Didn’t mean to post two times. The first one didn’t come up so I did a re-do.
My apologies.
December 8th, 2008 at 3:57 pm
Why have a gun their? To hunt if allowed. To kill a bear? I see no logic for this law. I hope this law is over turn.
December 8th, 2008 at 3:58 pm
I guess WILLY,BELLA,BRYAN,T.MASON and other right wing thinkers don,t understand. Why have a guns in 1 of the safest areas around. The right thinks like robots from outta space.
December 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm
For all of you who see no need to have this in place. How many of you have spent extended amounts of time OUTDOORS camping/hiking in a national park?
There have been MANY murders in the past 3 years in these “not like jersey, new york” places.
As a female who spends a great deal of time in the outdoors usually with my family I say “good job” on this one.
ROCKEY,
THat was a horrendous accident with an example of why an 8 year old should be supervised 100% of the time when guns are around.
December 8th, 2008 at 4:41 pm
I might add that just 2 years ago a family was hiking not far off a trail less than an hour from my home. They were attacked by a black bear who had 2 cubs. The mother and older son were mauled, the 4 year-old girl was killed by the bear.
If they had a handgun with a permit to carry this might have ended differently.
December 8th, 2008 at 4:43 pm
“This is the typical liberal assault on our basic right to “keep and BEAR arms”.
I wonder why high school kids aren’t allowed to bring glocks or .45’s to school. You never know when they will run into a mad dog or possum.
I wonder why employees can’t bring handguns to work. After all, it is our basic right to “keep and BEAR arms”
December 8th, 2008 at 5:29 pm
You don,t go near bears and you do not feed them. I am sad about what happen, but we don,t need gun in nat,l parks.
December 8th, 2008 at 5:34 pm
“Law abiding citizens who have concealed carry permits do not carry oozies…”
No, they hand the uzi to a an 8-year old in the middle of a gun show and then reach for another beer.
December 8th, 2008 at 6:16 pm
I bet has a permit to carry.
December 8th, 2008 at 6:21 pm
I bet Alan has a permit to carry.
December 8th, 2008 at 6:22 pm
Who is “we” Steve? Do you and other libs really believe you know better than I or any other American what is best for me?
I have heard stories about hikers and campers being attacked and some killed by the criminals who don’t abide by any gun laws. I have heard stories of campers or hikers being attacked by bears while on the proper trails or campsites. Maybe if they had a weapon things might have turned out differently and some of them would still be alive today.
By the way, “WE” don’t need abortion clinics in our neighborhoods.
December 8th, 2008 at 6:25 pm
Why not let everybody carry firearms? From schoolchildren to gang bangers to drug runners, etc. After all, everybody has a right to keep and BEAR arms.
BTW, get off the abortion soapbox. It’s getting old.
December 8th, 2008 at 7:52 pm
Well, I knew it was only a matter of time. After 20 years of backpacking all over the world without incident, I can finally feel safe in the wild knowing that every place on earth is now armed with yahoos. Thanks, Bush. You’re really going out with a “BANG”.
December 8th, 2008 at 8:51 pm
Hope this law is over turn. Bush was way off base on this 1.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
Why do most liberals know so little about gun laws, yet they yak the most about them?
Any “yahoo” as you put it cannot buy a gun legally. maybe you should take your angst and gripe about all the convicted felons who murder folks? They will get weapons no matter what laws you pass. KNow why? Criminals don’t follow the law.
Legit gun owners go through and extensive background check each and everytime they purchase a firearm. This background check is done by the state authorities. In order to carry a weapon legally (this varies state by state) you must attend a handgun course, pass a written exam and fire range exam and then go to a highway patrol office where they do another background check and file your paperwork with the state where the state says yeah or no. your fingerprints are on file, etc. etc.
Bush was right on on this one…and I hope it is not overturned.
Handguns would have saved a lot of folks lives who were murdered in national parks and elsewhere.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Steve,
you don’t know crap about bears. This family I mentioned didn’t “go near’ the bear. The bear ran out of the woods as they were hiking along a well marked trail.
Not everyone is stupid enough to walk up to a bear or feed a bear. That kind of behavior is saved for yahoos who have obviously never spent anytime in the great outdoors.
Explain to the young lady who was kidnapped two years ago by a guy in a national park while she was walking her dog. He held her at gunpoint for a week before he murdered her in the back of his van..IN a national park.
She was unarmed. he wasn’t. She was a college student. He was a criminal.
December 8th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
I agree, Steve. The last thing we need is more guns in the hands of civilians.

When the resolution of enslaving America was formed in Great Britain, the British Parliament was advised by an artful man, who was governor of Pennsylvania, to disarm the people; that it was the best and most effectual way to enslave them; but that they should not do it openly, but weaken them, and let them sink gradually…I ask, who are the militia? They consist of now of the whole people, except a few public officers. But I cannot say who will be the militia of the future day. Ms. T:
You are paranoid.
The examples that you site are extremely rare and aren’t even accurate (the incident in Georgia did not occur in a National Park). They certainly do not warrant the knee jerk legislation that you support… just like you would not, in the name of saving lives, support anti-gun laws to prevent children from finding and killing themselves with legally purchased guns (a much more common tragedy). So spare me the whole self defense bit. There are risks that you assume when you are in the backcountry. Man is a visitor. It’s not Disney World. Don’t turn it into Frontierland.

More of you liberals live in big cities and don’t even know the meaning of WILD life. Park rangers in yellowstone will match hikers with people carring guns for “PROTECTION”. You don’t have to do much to provoke a bear, but i sure all you city folks know that. If you think you don’t need any protection when hiking back in the wilderness, then let natural selection work its magic.
December 9th, 2008 at 12:43 am
Nope. No firearms or weapons, including state permitted concealed weapons are permitted in Yellowstone.
Nice try.

Been to nat,l parks before. The crime level is very low and i see no need to have them their. Just a bunch of right wing buffoons that do. Someone will end getting shot or endanger bird or something. You don,t go near bears.
December 9th, 2008 at 6:25 am
Steve,
Good morning.
Us “right wing buffoons” as you so endearingly call us, are law abiding citizens and some of us just so happens to engage in our constitutional right to bear arms. Why are you so afraid of us? We are not going to pull out a gun and shoot you.
Bears do not know a hiking path from any other path. True you don’t go near bears, but sometimes bears will go near you.
The second amendment does not specify where or when we can bear arms. I can’t find any exceptions there. What constitution are you reading Steve?
December 9th, 2008 at 7:55 am
With all of the sudden concern over bear attacks, I decided to do a little on line research. I come up with 43 recorded fatal bear attacks over the past 20 years.
Meanwhile, the average number of just ACCIDENTAL gun fatalities alone has averaged approximately 1500 per year over the same time period.
43 vs. 30,000. I like my odds in the woods without guns.
December 9th, 2008 at 8:19 am
If I were so terrified of bears that I felt the need to pack heat, I think I’d avoid going to the park.
I don’t understand people’s paranoia.
December 9th, 2008 at 8:26 am
As a PS to my above comment – I got’s no problems w/ you packing heat, Willy, if you want to. It is your right.
But we have the ‘right’ to do lots of stuff. I have the right to jam paperclips up my nose all day long if I want to. I almost never exercise that right, however. Just on the occasional rainy day, when I have nothing better to do.

Just because guns are not allowed in parks, don’t mean people will not carry them. If its going to jail or being torn up by a bear, guess which one i’ll choose.

As I’ve said before, humans aren’t exactly an endangered species.
Yellowstone, as Mark noted, is one of the last preserves for animals where THEY take precedence over the humans who have eradicated them from almost every other land in America.
My worry is, jerky hunters (”most gun owners are law-abiding citizens,” my ass) will shoot National Parks quarry and claim self-defense.
December 9th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
Let an idiot with a gun out in a field of jersy cows, and it’s steak time for a year.
December 9th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
I really don’t care if you want to own a gun or not. Millions of people choose to exercise their 2nd ammendment rights. I am not paranoid, nor am I scared…but I am also not stupid.
I am not stupid enough to think that if you ban weapons from national parks like you lefties want that criminals will adhere to that law.
“most gun owners are law abiding citizens my ass”…for someone who is so freakin’ against the 2nd ammendment you seem to know an awful lot of criminals carrying weapons, since you don’t think there are law-abiding gun owners.
December 9th, 2008 at 4:46 pm
Ah, T. Mason has a crush on me again. How darling.
T. Mason, are you going to be like that gun owner who held forth on the victimization of gun owners, and when I told him I’d have to bow out of the conversation, since I knew about 7 people who had been shot to death, he blurted, “Well they would’ve died anyway!”
Just love how you get so personal with your, “for someone who is so freakin’ against the 2nd ammendment you seem to know an awful lot of criminals carrying weapons.”
Actually, I’m upper middle-class, and most of the victims’ murderers were “law-abiding gun-owners.”
So I know you always love to pounce on anything I post on here, but if you could please point your strap-on away from me, I’d appreciate it.
Thanks.

December 9th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Aha! Worked.
Answer to Willy: Nope.
I’m actually still thinking of buying a gun. I think I’d like to start out with a shotgun, and work my way to a handgun. There are a few ranges around where I live, and a trap-and-skeet range nearby, which I’ve enjoyed before.
However, I think there should be more restrictions on gun ownership, as in longer waiting periods, thorough background checks (including a mental health screening, hello VMI and Columbine), and harsh penalties for accidental or negligent gun deaths.
Crime tends to decrease when the economy is more stable. When it’s down like this, the antidote is not “more guns.”
My turn to ask you a question: Do you feel that there are too many restrictions on gun ownership? Do you feel that more guns lead to a safer society?
December 9th, 2008 at 6:45 pm
Hey Robert Blair, true story, just for you (from 1992):
You might say early bird hunter Larry Lands sorta cooked his own goose when the turkey he thought he had shot dead suddenly quit playing possum – and shot him back! “Looks like the turkeys are fighting back,” Washington County, Missouri, Sheriff Ron Skiles said. Seems 40 year old Larry and his 16 year old son, Larry Jr., were proudly showing a friend the gobbler they had bagged when, without warning, the sneaky critter suddenly began thrashing around in the trunk of their car. “The father’s loaded shotgun was also in the trunk,” Sheriff Skiles said. “Somehow or other, the turkey managed to get a claw on the trigger. The shotgun discharged, sending the shot through the side panel of the car and into the father’s leg. “The gun was loaded with 12-guage, three-inch Magnums. The blast struck him in the left leg, about six inches above the knee. It shattered the bone and pretty much tore up the flesh. “I hear he may lose the leg. If not, he’s in for a lot of reconstructive surgery. It’s a heck of a price to pay for a turkey.” Adding insult to inljury, it turns out the two hunters had launched their turkey shoot out of season and now face misdemeanor charges that could get them a year in jail. “They were definitely hunting out of season,” the sheriff explained. “They bagged their turkey a week before the season opens.”
December 9th, 2008 at 6:48 pm
Sarah,
I think there are to many restrictions on gun ownership. I think that more guns do lead to a safer society.
You notice I said “think” as opposed to “feel”. That is because when you bring emotion into these debates you begin to fail to use logic over emotion.
There are over 20,000 gun laws on the books today across our country. Do you really think one more will quell the use of guns by criminals?
Just look at D.C. They have the most restrictive gun prohibition in the nation and they claim the prize of murder capital of America. The criminals in D.C. are using guns. Is the D.C. gun ban laws keeping their citizens safe? You are going to argue that these criminals are buying their guns out of the D.C. area. You are right since you can’t buy one in DC.
The murder rate in my area is barely makes a blip compared to areas with very restrictive gun laws.
December 9th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
Love it….If Bambi’s mom was armed, we might have had to rewrite the end of that story.
Karma and armed critters….all for it.
I love it also when tight ends get an illagel pistol and then complain that the law is too strict after they get caught (he shot himself in the leg….literally LOL). Ya know, there are some that feel sorry for the idiot….he got an illegal gun…duh….
I wonder if our Alaskan governor would like to be shot at from a helecopter full of wolves drooling over her.
December 9th, 2008 at 6:56 pm
There is a 43% increase in probability of a person being harmed by a gun if they, themselves, own a gun.
December 9th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
Sarah,
You flatter yourself MUCh too much. I comment on what you and everyone else has to say, you assume that what you say is most important to me and everyone else.
Dare I say that you believe you are the only upper middle class female who have friends who have been victims of gun crimes? Neigh say I.
I also have friends who have been vicitms of attempted burglaries, rapes, muggings, home invasions and yes, murder by firearm.
I am not ignorant enough to think that banning handguns will solve the problem. I understand that people who want to murder will murder with what is available, be it a gun, a knife, a car, a baseball bat, a rope, a jug of acid, the list can go on and on.
Just ask the citizens in Europe where they have totally banned citizens from owning handguns how they like living by the sword.
As far as strap-ons go, only you would be immature enough to say something so stupid and petty to try and rattle someone else. That is your modus operandi when you have nothing of substance to say.
robert,
I have been around handguns my entire life and never have I been harmed.
And by the way, name me one person who wants to commit a violent crime who stops and says “gee whiz, I don’t have a permit so I better not use this gun to shoot someone”. Nonsense.

T, you want to kiss me hard right now, don’t you?
This leap of logic and phrasing were oh-so-mature…
“…for someone who is so freakin’ against the 2nd ammendment you seem to know an awful lot of criminals carrying weapons, since you don’t think there are law-abiding gun owners.”
