Until 2000, Non-Whites Not Welcome in Bush’s New Neighborhood

December 8th, 2008, 4:33 PM EST

From this article, via Crooks & Liars:

The neighborhood where George and Laura Bush are buying a house is one of the most exclusive in North Texas. And until just a few years ago, it was downright restrictive… The house on Daria Place is in a neighborhood known as the James Meaders Estates. Until the year 2000, the neighborhood association’s covenant said only white people could live there—unless they were servants.

The covenant, which was in place for 44 years, was an unenforceable declaration of racial hatred:

The covenant was enacted in 1956. Eight years earlier, in 1948, the U.S. Supreme Court made it illegal to enforce such covenants. The court said although private groups could legally make agreements to exclude people of certain races from using property, the states could not enforce them.

  1. So if the covenant has been bunk since it was enacted why are you brining it up?

  2. He visted Bob Jones Univ in 2000 that did allow racial dating at the time. This no shock to me. It,s the judgement of Bush.

  3. Ya well; try getting into the House or the Senate building . Only NONPEONS need apply !!!!! White house; FORGET ABOUT IT !!!!!!
    VOTE THE SWINE OUT !!!!!

  4. What’s the point of this story anyway Alan?

This country is trying to get away from racism and all you do is stir it up every chance you get.

Barack Obama is Pres. elect. The rasist game is over. No more excuses. The great Jim Brown said it in an interview before a football game right after the election. He said that the black community now has no excuses.

  5. Amen Willy!!

  6. “He visted Bob Jones Univ in 2000 that did allow racial dating at the time. This no shock to me. It,s the judgement of Bush” posted by Steve

    Whats racial dating ?

  7. Didn’t we just elect a bi-racial president?? thought so.

  8. “” He said that the black community now has no excuses.”"

Then he, sir, is a moron. Or else he is the one stirring up hatred. Do you REALLY think that 300 years of disadvantage, and being treated like a subhuman…including just a generation ago when there was segregation?! Do you REALLY think that can be undone by the election of Obama?

Sometimes you Americans leave me absolutely speechless. Your lack of perpective and, frankly, absolute ignorance of history is astounding.

I can only blame your education system, preference for televised sports and other crap…or else you’re just proud to be ignorant.

  9. I have native american ancestors who were treated like crap too. I am not holding a grudge, neither does my family.

I assume since you call us “you americans’ you aren’t one yourself. Maybe you should visit and try it out before you talk about our lack of perspective.

someone who talks about doing something very personal in the same sentence that they mention God probably doesn’t have very good eyesight to point out my, or other americans downfalls.

  10. I’m surprised at how many people think that the election of an African-American president means that racism is “over,” and no longer worthy of concern.

  11. My Irish and Italian ancestors were looked down upon in this country also. We elected a biracial President before we elected a President of Italian descent or Jewish descent. People seem to think that all Italians have Mafia connections, i.e. The Sopranos. Would people vote for a Jewish President, I wonder?

  12. Joel, racism isn’t over but we’ve made great strides. What erks me and a lot of other people is when people like Alan put stuff up like this to feed it.

  13. My point, T’, is just how ridiculous the concept of a personal ‘god” is…judging us each and every one, lol.

Churches :Preventing the availablilty of condoms to poor folks in the 3rd world because it’s a “sin”…filling young people with artificial guilt if they realize they are gay…the list goes on…

You are right if you are equating the raw deal that natives of NA have received with the struggle of African-North Americans – both groups had rich and diverse cultures that were oppressed and systematicallydamaged by white Europeans for hundreds of years.

I have a sinking feeling that you may agree that Native-North Americans should just “pull themselves up by their own bootstraps”…yeah?

  14. alan is not “feeding” anything, he is pointing out that there are many remnants of racism still polluting our lives.

The Republican president Ronald Reagan, as governor of California, once said, and I quote; “A person selling or renting their house should be allowed to discriminate against Negroes, that is their right…”

This was in 1967, a little over a decade before he was elected as president…and became the hero of the “right”…

  15. Hey Frosty~ It’s 2008 not 1967

  16. Alan,

When does this crap stop….. Has our history made some mistakes you bet they have. Did Germany make some mistakes in their history… you bet they did… have other nations made mistakes in their history… you bet they have… So do we learn by our mistakes or do we just continue to make them. Are we going to forever be a. We cannot heal the wrongs done generations ago, nor can we throw money at it to heal the wounds, Do we wake each day and be hell bent on making the world pay for wrong deeds done decades ago. We have to wake up each day and ask ourselves what can we do today, to be sure that never happens again. We have to look around us and wonder if we are part of the problem instead of being part of the solution.

It’s time to let it go. Spend your days being grateful for every blessing you have (oh gee Alan, blessing may not be a word you would want to hear) Be thankful that you live at a time when we are not afraid to speak up against such horrible acts as in our past. It’s terrible what has happened to people all over the world from the Jewish being killed by the Natzi’s, the African Americans being enslaved and killed by our own Americans, the Iraqi’s being killed by Sadaam H and the list goes on and on. It’s shameful that any human being acts this way towards any other human being but dwelling on it each and every day is just as unhealthy. It’s time to learn from the past and not repeat it, not use it as an excuse to continue such shameful behavior.

  17. You’re right Gayle. It’s a scant 30-40 years since segregation was prevelant. A generation or two…many many African-Americans grew up being treated as second class citizens.
You are right! We are not talking about 150 years ago, we are talking about half a lifetime!

According to Gallup (google it) – as recently as 1970 72% of americans “disapproved” of mixed-race marriages!

And yes, it’s 2008, and according to Gallup, 28% of you STILL disapprove.

    Digusting.

  18. Although, note the huge swing to the left…
    ;-)
    Thank (your) god(s)!

  19. “”t’s time to learn from the past and not repeat it”‘

That’s not enough. You can’t sweep your past under the carpet. We have a responsibility to do whatever we can to help lift our formerly oppressed brothers and sisters out of the disadvantaged position they’re in.

  20. “According to Gallup (google it) – as recently as 1970 72% of americans “disapproved” of mixed-race marriages!
And yes, it’s 2008, and according to Gallup, 28% of you STILL disapprove.Digusting.” posted by Frosty

I read that also—didn’t read the part where they said that poll was taken only amomg white people though. The Nation of Islam forbids mixed marriage, when will liberals step up and call them racist?
During the Civil War there were over 398,000 FREE blacks in this country–over 3000 black slave owners.Do their ancestors need to help “lift the oppressed brothers and sisters” as you say or just white amreicans?

  21. Alan,
I agree that it was really wrong that they were wrong to be racist and selective but they have gotten past it and it is history. Get over yourself! Lets talk about the present and quit going after Bush. He’s been through enough. How much more of a prick are you going to be?

  22. Islam is a religion, not a “race”, as you probably know.

But I have no more patience for extremists from the Muslim community than I do extremist Christians.

Although both religions believe in God, and tout their holy books as unchanging law for all time…I find both religions in need of further enlightenment, which is happening more every day. Very few church leaders actually continue to belive in a literal translation, at least among christians…although often their income depends on them not admitting it…

There is, in fact, much in the qu’ran that is taken from the bible, which in turn contains much that is borrowed from the myths of Horus, Dionysus etc, ….

  23. Did anyone complaining to Alan about this blog post notice that Joel posted it? I’m not complaining about the posting, but I noticed those complaining about it want to blame Alan. So what’s the claim then, that this is so offensive a post that Alan should delete this contribution of Joel’s? Perhaps Alan wrote it, I’m not sure. I remember him referencing it, but I don’t recall exactly who he credited as the author.

  24. I never cease to be amazed by the irony of bigoted comments by folks like baD mR fRosTy. He’s so worried about racism and discrimination that he paints all Americans with the broad bigots brush accusing all of us of ignorance of history, lack of perspective and preference for televised sports. Bigotry is perfectly acceptable when it’s bigotry against Americans, conservatives or Fox News viewers.

  25. BUSH move their ,therefore he, fair game. Obama won does shake down the walls of racism but alot of walls remain like that place where BUSH moved to and BOB JONES UNIV.,The war in IRAQ shows how out of touch this man is. Parts of Texas is is filled with bigotry. Look what happen to BYRD. Perhaps BUSH is a racist as well. BOB JONES UNIV at the time did let people date of different colors in 2000. BUSH went their. I ? alot of you neocons if you are perhaps racist as well. OBAMA won remarks. You neocons did not vote for him. Bush step into more crap moving their. It will take years to clean up the crap he left for 8 years.

  26. “… quit going after Bush. He’s been through enough.”

Sorry Jeff, no, he hasn’t. Not until he’s held accountable for his misdeeds. He is directly responsible for tens of thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of deaths, not to mention the millions of people whose lives have been irreparably damaged by his policies and actions.

As he and his minions are now on their “Let’s Rewrite History” tour, he deserves to be reminded of all the people, here and abroad, whose lives have been damaged or destroyed by his actions. He should not have a moment of peace (and I mean that literally, not a single moment), until he admits his crimes, both legal and moral.

As for racism, rest assured that it is alive and well in the U.S. From folks in my hometown who still talk about “the coloreds” to my landlord who won’t rent to blacks (but will only admit it in whispers), to that 28% of Americans who still disapprove of mixed marriage. And, in a perverse way, to the people who complained that Obama wasn’t “black enough” to represent their community and viewpoints.

No, the election of Obama isn’t the end of racism. But it is, hopefully, a huge step in that direction. His election provides a real, tangible example of what can be accomplished by someone who isn’t a white person of Northern-European/Anglo descent. As Winston Churchill said: “Now this is not the end. It is not even the beginning of the end. But it is, perhaps, the end of the beginning.”

  27. For the life of me, I can’t understand why the neonuts come here and post. They would be much more comfortable with their own nutty kind @ michellemalkin.com. I visited her site ONCE. Never again.

  28. Why doesn’t this story surprise me in the least…sheesh. He probably got the recommendation to live there from his daddy…Chaney. They both need a whole course on “This is America and it’s not wise to do things that insult our principles and the progress of human rights.”
Nice public relations, Georgie….that ranch was all public garbage, too…..yeah, like you really knew what you were doing in that tank with that dumb helmet on……oh? Really? Gee, it sure looked like you, George….well, I guess it looked like you when you pretended to be a co pilot on that carrier (ah, the stage that was set for you was really a joke….nice job, kids)…and on that tractor that almost go away from you. George, you are the present that just keeps giving…..and giving…and giving…

  29. southern girl lib:

I happened to be in the library the other day and saw Ann Coulter’s book, “If Liberals Were Smart, They’d Be Repbublicans”. That was a mistake I’ll never make again.

I immediately went home and took an hour-long shower.

  30. Coultergist can do that to people….I hear you turn to stone if you look at her picture. And, your feet get planted in the “cement of permanent ignorant bigotry” if you open her book…So, beware…the evil lurks close to us when her name is even mentioned…so, beware……….

  31. BAd,

I have never met a Native American who wanted you to feel sorry for them. That is a fact jack.

And southern lib girl….you must be very closed minded to only want to listen to and read posts of the people who think exactly like you.

  32. Bad Alan! You’re making the whities feel guilty again! Getting their backs up, becoming all defensive and offensive at the same time! “I don’t feel guilty! Why you trying to make us feel so guilty! Why can’t we put on the happy blackface and tapdance again!”

(Thanks, actually. It never ceases to entertain.)

  33. Sarah, you shouldn’t feel guilty…good for you. Bush? You’re right…it basically is a who cares about him. The real news for me is that there are still places as late as 2000 that were white only places. That, even today, cracks me up that people think they could get away with that LOL
I’m now curious how many of those little enclaves still hang around. Are the Elks still “anti” others?

  34. Why should we feel guilty? Let’s throw stones at native americans. They had slaves too. Heck, black people STILL own other black people in some places.

I didn’t own slaves, my parents, grandparents, great grandparents, great great grandparents did not own slaves. Did someone in my family somehwere along the way? Maybe. I don’t have to ask forgiveness for their sins.

Most of my family either came from Ireland, were Cherokee and Crowe Indian and were here long before race became an issue.

What amazes me is how someone calls other people “whities” in the same sentence where they pretend to be above everyone else in the “race” discussion. I have black friends who wouldn’t do that.

  35. TDRO, i will never pick up ANN COULTERS book. To much dirt for me. That lady is filled with hate and anger.

  36. “The covenant, which was in place for 44 years, was an unenforceable declaration of racial hatred:”
The covenant was in place from 1956 to 2000,despite the courts ruling that the state can NOT honor that covenant, but associations are free to make such covenants.
So the neighbourhood where Bush is moving to,till 2000, explicitly STATED:
“This is NOT legal, but Non-Whites are NOT welcome here”.

And T Mason,Willy,Gayle…you’re telling me that the Racism on this issue died when the law was enacted in 1948?

  37. Hmm.So the neighbourhood took the covenant off in 2000.8 years later,Barack Obama is elected President.Sure, this should heal the wounds of Every Non White who visited that neighbourhood in between 1956 and 2000,tried to get a home, got rejected with ambiguous reasons provided,in a neighbourhood where such a covenant was in place…Ooookay,I guess racial wounds are hyped up.

  38. The bottom line racism is alive and well. Go to some hate sites and DAVID DUKE. I knew blacks own blacks as far back 1600 and something. Just because OBAMA won race issue ended. Texas is laced with alot of racical hate and where W moved to proves my point.

  39. Robert,

Sure, there are still some “only white” places around. But do you think there are a few “only black” places around? The Congressional Black Caucus is for black congressman ONLY. Obama’s pastor for the past 20 years has been preaching rasism.

Racism is an evil that will never be totally eradicated. But there really is no excuse for anyone not to be able to better themselves today.

  40. Hey TDRO. He, he, he, he, haw, haw, he!!!!!!!

  41. Willy,

“ The Congressional Black Caucus is for black congressman ONLY”

In EVERY facet of life, the minority feel the need to protect themselves in this way…hence, ‘Physicians or Engineers from India, Pakistan, China, Korea…etc.

While I CAN see your point, I can also see, the point of Rep. Clay pertaining to white membership, other than honorary membership:

“Quite simply, Rep. Cohen will have to accept what the rest of the country will have to accept – there has been an unofficial Congressional White Caucus for over 200 years, and now it’s our turn to say who can join ‘the club.’ He does not, and cannot, meet the membership criteria, unless he can change his skin color. Primarily, we are concerned with the needs and concerns of the black population, and we will not allow white America to infringe on those objectives.”

There is a tendency of the majority to dominate and then when the minority gets their turn, say, “Oh no, it’s all equal now. Time to move on!”

As for Rev Wright, I don’t see him as preaching racism. I think he spoke OF racism, and people called HIM the racism.

As for:” But there really is no excuse for anyone not to be able to better themselves today.”

A report, Economic Mobility: Is the American Dream Alive and Well? is part of the Economic Mobility Project, a collaborative effort of The Pew Charitable Trusts, AEI, the Brookings Institution, the Heritage Foundation and the Urban Institute.

Quoting no less an authority than President Bush, the report begins:

President George W. Bush addressed the issue for the first time in January 2007 during remarks to Wall Street: “The fact is that income inequality is real—it’s been rising for more than 25 years.”
    Among the report’s other findings:

•Growth in after-tax income for the top 1 percent has far outpaced growth for others between 1979 and 2004.

The United States has less relative economic mobility than many other developed countries.

Income falls behind productivity. Between 1947 and 1974, productivity and income grew together, but between 1974 and 2005, productivity and income grew apart.

    From the VOA:
“One sector of the economy that enabled upward mobility for many people has largely disappeared. Heavy industries, once a source of good jobs that provided upward mobility, have diminished in recent years leaving workers with limited skills behind.
“The loss of the industrial society – or the industrial economy – really hit the middle class hard in this country, particularly the Black middle class.”

  42. Old Lefty,

I understand your point about the “unoffical” white caucus for the past couple centuries, but can you really correct a wrong by doing the exact thing that wronged the black community? My Mom used to tell us that “two wrongs don’t make a right.”

But where I am really coming from is the fact that Martin Luther King lived and died by trying to change the way people think about race and equal rights. He said that you should “judge a man not by the color of his skin, but by the content of his character.” (I hope I quoted him correctly) I really believe that and I try to look at others in the same way.

I understand your concerns about the needs of the black population and I agree you should not allow ANY American to infringe on those objectives.

  43. I got to take off for a time. Will be back this afternoon. Will continue this discussion later Old Lefty if you want.

  44. Robert:
“The real news for me is that there are still places as late as 2000 that were white only places. That, even today, cracks me up that people think they could get away with that LOL
I’m now curious how many of those little enclaves still hang around. Are the Elks still “anti” others?”

I saw a report on TV somewhere yesterday on a study conducted by someone on segregation in Housing, and it said that Housing was ‘very’ segregated.Unfortunately they didnt see the report long enough to see the statistics, but am sure you can find the report somewhere.
Actually, there’s nothing to ‘get away with’: Racial discrimination (if proven) can be made illegal(and I believe it has been enacted in some legal forms), racism is not illegal, because it is in the minds of people. How can any government control by law what is in the minds of their subjects, its just not possible.

Racism wont disappear,as Willy said. The best (as he said) you can do is try to be a better individual each day.

  45. Yeah, the bigger ‘offender’ if I may say so here is Alan for giving this article prominence: comments like Willy,Gayle,TMason made “no more excuses for black people” I think do less damage to the cause of healing racial wounds than the actual act of reopening them by making this article a point of discussion.
