I Want To Be A Kennedy. I Want To Say “Ich Bin Ein Kennedy”

December 23rd, 2008, 11:16 AM EST

Further displaying a lack of political acumen and feeding the perception of arrogance, Caroline Kennedy is refusing to make her finances public.

20080130__obamacarolinekennedyp1If she were applying to be, say, an undersecretary of education in Barack Obama’s new administration, Caroline Kennedy would have to fill out a 63-item confidential questionnaire disclosing potentially embarrassing text messages and diary entries, the immigration status of her household staff, even copies of every résumé she used in the last 10 years.

If she were running for election to the Senate, Kennedy would have to file a 10-part, publicly available report disclosing her financial assets, credit card debts, mortgages, book deals and the sources of any payments greater than $5,000 in the last three years.

Kennedy refused to reply to questions about companies with which she is involved, and even whether she’s ever been charged with a crime.  Sitting senators must file disclosure statements by May 15 each year, and Kennedy says she’ll won’t reveal information unless and until she becomes a senator.

“If this were an open primary, and all the people seeking that position had to run, she’d have to make all those disclosures, so why not in the appointment process?” said Bob Edgar, president of Common Cause, a watchdog group that lobbies for tighter ethics rules. “She can’t simply ride in on her name recognition or place in history. The voters and people of New York deserve that full disclosure.”

Kennedy has thus far answered 11 questions from reporters and granted no interviews.  Her staff issued answers in writing to questions about her position in key issues, often evading direct responses.

Responses to this post...

  1. Wow. As if her lack of experience and feeling that her name can get her what she wants now we have this. Can’t figure for the life of me why anyone would want her to be their senator based on this.

  2. Why would you want a President like that? Didnt you vote for W twice?

  3. It’s looking really elitist. Maybe Caroline’s a closet republican.

  4. You take up for kennedy by comparing her to bush? that is pretty lame, weak and typical.

  5. T. Mason is a Jelly Donut.

  6. I, for one, welcome my liberal, democratic, northeast elite, neo-feudalistic overlady.

  7. I know nothing about this lady, but she is sure making it look like she has something to hide.

  8. T. Mason:
And Sarah Palin had sooooo much to offer as VP

  9. TDRO,

Sarah Palin has NOTHING to do with this kennedy fiasco. You can’t accept that YOUR party is offering a poor candidate for a position that she thinks she deserves based on name alone.

And all this time I thought we fled England to do away with the monarchy. I am tired of politicians thinking they are entitled to a seat based on lucky sperm. It is absurb

  10. I’m surprised no one has picked up on this remarkably ignorant statement:

    A. Caroline supports Roe v. Wade, which prohibits third-trimester abortions except when the life or health of the mother is at risk.

    Roe does no such thing.

It is laughable that people of the left keep trying to put down Sarah Palin — the fact that she is more impressive, and has more experience, and is smarter than our now President Elect (yes, she knows there aren’t fifty seven states, or is it fifty eight that Obama thinks are out there? — “fifty seven states, one more to go!!”).

I hear lefties’ fear talking, Palin is coming back — and you better be ready, and you better shout.

  11. LOL, lucky sperm. The winners of the great lottery of birth.

  14. Right on, Separate Man!

  15. you cant be serious and tell me a person who doesnt know what the VP role constitutionally, and who went to 5 colleges in 6 years to get a BA in journalism is smarter than a lawyer and constitutional scholar? That is hilarious. Sarah Palin is not smarter than Barack Obama’s children.

  16. Ike,

Kinda like Biden? OH let me counts the silly things he has said. He teaches constitutional law and doesn’t even know where the VP role is defined? Give me a break.

The next 4 years with him as VP are gonna be gold for the late night comics.

  17. Biden is intellectually superior to you and Sarah Palin. He is an old man and a gaffe factory, but not stupid. Like he cares if you or late night talk shows make fun of him. The only thing he cares about is upholding the constitution.

  18. Won’t be able to compare the eight years of late night comedy with W. Or, the campaign season with Sarah Palin and Tina F’” Talk about silly: “I can see Russia from Alaska”, and all those nonsensical interviews. The only reason why anyone is “fear talking” about Palin coming back is because they are in fear of their lives! I pray to God she is the Rep. candidate in 2012. She won’t be anymore prepared then than she was now. She will still believe that she can BS and bluster her way to the top.

  19. I am ROFL. I hate to break it to you Ike. Career politicians are part of the problem, not the solution. The idea that because the man has been in Washington for 30 years that he is superior intellectually or otherwise to most people is part of the elitist ideaology that screws the average american over and over again.

And it simply isn’t true. And FYI, in order for him to spew a gaffe, he actually has to #1either be misinformed about history and other things OR #2 senile and forgets things he once knew, OR #3 He really isn’t as smart as HE, or you thinks he is.

But for the record, I never brought up intelligence. You did. I don’t doubt is he smart…but for you to go THAT overboard? You are stretching it tooooo far.

  20. T Mason you are the only one going overboard. I wasnt even talking about something you posted. You are so angry. You should try to pray your hate away. This is not time to be hateful.

  21. W got his seat based on sperm. He’s part of one of the biggest political monarchy. Let’s see we had Prescott Bush, we had George HW Bush, we had Jeb Bush, we had George W Bush. I personally am not impressed with Caroline Kennedy, but I’am not impressed with the Bush dynasty either.

  23. TDRO, Ike. I thought Caroline Kennedy was the story. Maybe I just read her name wrong. It didn’t look like it was spelled SARAH PALIN.

Admit it libs, you are in love with Sarah Palin.

  24. She should go ahead and show her paper work. If she has nothing to hide, that will shut up the folks that bash her. If she is serious about this job or go on and let someone else get the spot.

  25. I agree with Steve.

Uh, Steve. This is getting scary. I have agreed with you now on several posts. lol

  26. Thanks WILLY! If she is serious about the job, show the paper work. I like her as the senator pick,do we need a drawn out story? Maybe my right side of me is coming out. I don,t agree with alot of things on the left. Her luster is wearing off not showing those papers. You have to ? her.

  27. Dick Cheney,Willy,that,s another planet.

  28. If she wants to be in public office then, yes, she should diliver the paperwork. What she is doing is exactly what puts suspicion in the minds of the American people.

  29. Sarah is now a force in American politics, sorry for those who want to denigrate her — the idea of a smart Republican woman, popular and successful drives liberals crazy.

And she was exactly right about the VP’s role in the Constitution. Anyone actually know as much as she does on that? The Veep is the President of the Senate, votes on tie votes to break, and presides over it. In practice that has been left to the President Pro Tem in recent times, but if you’ve ever seen C-Span 2 during a tight vote, who was sitting there in the chair?

    Dick Cheney.

In fact when the Senate was split 50-50 in the early 2000’s, the GOP controlled the chamber, because they had the VP as a Republican. People should stop accusing others of ignorance when speaking out of ignorance. If anyone wants to correct me, try it.

  31. Ike — by the way, Sarah may be equally as smart as the Obama children, if they are both smarter than our new President in knowing that there are only 50 states. You don’t even get to 57 by including the territories (Guam, American Samoa, Virgin Islands, and Northern Marianas) and the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and the District of Columbia.

Maybe he was thinking of unincorporated islands like Midway Island or a few atolls here and there?

  32. “Caroline Kennedy would have to fill out a 63-item confidential questionnaire disclosing potentially embarrassing text messages and diary entries, the immigration status of her household staff, even copies of every résumé she used in the last 10 years. Posted by Alan Colmes.”

By the way all you Obama-haters, the same processes applied to Obama when he went into the Senate. So if was say … I dunno … a foreign national, they would have found such things out by now. Another issue on Obama is that you have to present valid and traceable birth-records to take the BAR exam in any state.

    On Caroline:
Look, I not outright against this but I think the Senate seat should be filled by the people not the Congress. That’s all.

Here is my idea like anyone cares:
Give Teddy Kennedy the seat as a sitting position so it is filled. Ted has proved himself more than enough for a sitting-seat being handed to him. Then the people of NY state hold an election with Fran and Caroline and anyone else thinking they got what it takes for the Senate.

Everybody read my non-profit news site linked through my name on this comment. Not designed for LIBS or CONS but rather Americans. What a thought…

  33. And all this time I thought we fled England to do away with the monarchy. I am tired of politicians thinking they are entitled to a seat based on lucky sperm. It is absurb

For once you and I agree on something. I too am tired of politicians assuming that by virtue of office alone they hold power over who should serve the people.

Get those facts straight, T. We left England not to do away with monarchy, that came late, we fled to escape religious persecution or if you prefer religious tyranny by England.

I’ll check out your site and provide input once I get started on Blogger.
Check me out on Word Press. I promise nothing on the initial site will make you feel like your listening / reading Alan.

  34. eric,

i haven’t posted to my site in months. life has been too hectic for me to do the proper research/etc to do it justice.

I hope to be blogging again soon.

  35. “Another issue on Obama is that you have to present valid and traceable birth-records to take the BAR exam in any state.”

Not really. I took the Bar exam in Illinois, only a couple years after BO, and I only had to show a driver’s license (or other proof of residence).

“Give Teddy Kennedy the seat as a sitting position so it is filled. Ted has proved himself more than enough for a sitting-seat being handed to him.”

I don’t get this: Ted Kennedy is already a Senator, one who in fact had his Senate seat handed to him back in the sixties by his father Joe. He’s dying from a brain cancer, and may not last for the next two years. But he’s keeping his Mass. seat, why would he go to a NY seat? I must say, I’ve never heard of the concept of one person holding two Senate seats … who knows?

Basic point, they should hold a special election so that the democratic process (note the small “d”) can work it’s will. The adulterer in chief of New York isn’t quite the guy to put a man or woman in the Senate on his own judgment (such as it is).

Can anyone imagine Caroline performing a filibuster? On what issue?

  39. I’d bet Caroline Kennedy is procrasinating about disclosing her financial dealings and assets because she has illegal domestic help for whom she is not paying SS and not reporting income. If you have nothing to hide, then why hide? There’s something in the safe that she doesn’t want anyone to see and I’d bet on it. If she can wait until, say, April or May, then she may have time to fire the domestic, hire a new legal one and pay the piper.

  40. Another Kennedy hit piece. Colmes doesn’t like Caroline Kennedy.

    Yes, we get it now.

Give her a chance. She’ll be up for election in two years anyway. Caroline Kennedy to replace Clinton and Tammy Duckworth to replace Obama. We could do a lot worse. We have done a lot worse.

  41. I didn’t realize every liberal had to like every liberal. How quaint. There isn’t much to like about someone who thinks they are entitled to a job because of their last name, and who they have done favors for. I thought those senate seats were for people who EARNED them, and were there to serve the people?

And all this time I thought the liberals held the market on being open-minded and fair, regardless of party affiliation.

    YEAH RIGHT
