Woman Claims Saying “Merry Christmas” Got Her Fired
Tonia Thomas refused to say “Happy Holidays”, and says Counts-Oakes Resorts Properties, Inc, a vacation rental company, fired her for saying “Merry Christmas.” The company says it’s a Christian company that celebrates Christmas and that Thomas is a disgruntled employee.
“I hold my core Christian values to a high standard and I absolutely refuse to give in on the basis of values. All I wanted was to be able to say ‘Merry Christmas’ or to acknowledge no holidays,” [Thomas] said Tuesday. “As a Christian, I don’t recognize any other holidays.”
G. Thomas Harper, a labor attorney and expert on Florida employment law doubts that Thomas can win her case.
“I wouldn’t think an employee has the right to insist (on saying Merry Christmas) unless that really is a tenet of their faith. She would have to make a strong case that was part of her beliefs, if not, it becomes insubordination,” he said.”
Thomas told FOX News that the phrase “Happy Holidays” offends her and that she refuses to participate in “secularizing Christmas.”
“I said I have a problem with saying ‘Happy Holidays,’” Thomas told FOXNews.com. “The world … groups Christmas with other holidays, and that’s offensive to me as a Christian.”

That was extremly petty,at the sametime she has no right to imposed her views on others at the work place. Sounds like a disgruntled employee to me. I don,t think singing MERRY CHRISTMAS got her fired.

This woman is an idiot.
Sincerely,
Mark
December 26th, 2008 at 11:30 am
How are you going to take offense from “Happy Holidays”? Idiot? Yes.
December 26th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Christians. The best way to keep the meaning of Christmas alive is to faithfully practice our traditions within your family and teach them to your children. Do not worry about what the rest of the world is doing. Do not rail against the unbelievers as you are wasting your time and you invite their animosity. Practice your faith openly and serve as an example of kindness and moderation but do not try and force others to believe as you do or become defensive when your beliefs and traditions are questioned. If the truth is in you, you have nothing else to be concerned about.
December 26th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
“I said I have a problem with saying ‘Happy Holidays,’” Thomas told FOXNews.com. “The world … groups Christmas with other holidays, and that’s offensive to me as a Christian.”
So Jews don’t count – Happy Hannukah is offensive to a Christian??
December 26th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
She is taking this to a level that doesn’t make sense. I guess it makes sense to her, though.
I guess she and her lawyer can argue that “witnessing” (preaching to others and bringing them into the faith) IS a tenent of Christianity, and that saying “Merry Christmas” is an act of witnessing. That might help their case.
I think she should’ve just said nothing at all.
If the company wasn’t giving her the choice to say nothing, THEN she should have a case. Because no one should be forced to say happy any-kind-of-holy-day that you don’t celebrate. (even though it doesn’t hurt to say it, but that’s not the point here)
December 26th, 2008 at 12:29 pm
Christopher,
Very well said. Hope you and your family had a wonderful Christmas, as well as everyone here.
December 26th, 2008 at 12:35 pm
Disgruntled employee or not, employer’s policies must be adhered to and avoid anemosity or consequences. I learned a lesson from Alan Colmes (I’ve watched him at H&C SHOW). He built up his reputations as TV commentator for years with Fox News, Radio Show, set up his Blog, waited for his wife’s book published, (on sale in his Blog), kept his business contacts intact (didn’t “burn any bridges”), and sat down with his boss at FoxNews with diplomacy. . . and move on. Wise man, Alan. Happy Holiday!
December 26th, 2008 at 12:47 pm
“imposed her views on others at the work place”, Christmas is a NATIONAL HOLIDAY, so get over it.
December 26th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
Just another example of stifling one’s ability to express their belief. If she had worn a button that simply said “Happy Holidays” I wonder if her boss would have had a problem with it?

T Mason:
She was at work.
I know you like to make the conservative argument for everything just for the fun of it, but find another topic. This is stupid.

I would also like to say well said Christopher. Ok whos on T. Mason watch this week? Sarah I believe had her last week. Btw Sarah nice retort on the body and blood of jesus last week, kudos to you my friend. Cmon PFKAM is it your turn? Ok I know this sounds mean but we could put vasaline or oil on the door knob, makes it difficult to turn. I read that somewhere… :)

“As a Christian, I don’t recognize any other holidays.”
There you have it – Christian values in a nutshell. Bigotry, blind hatred of everybody else, cult-like unquestioning adherence to a fairy tale.
December 26th, 2008 at 2:54 pm
Ooooops it was PFKAM watch… thata boy!!

Someone should be on JAKE watch. It’s funny how everyone thinks their belief is the truth while all of the others are wrong and/or misleading.
I’ve been a Christian for most of my life; however, I definitely do not believe that being brought up a Baptist guarantees me the key to heaven. Christianity itself, is a belief in Christ. That being said, there are other religions that I disagree with because they do not make sense to me “personally”, or morally. I believe in free will, and the ability for people to make their own determination on whether or not they will accept or deny the existence of a higher power (In my case, that’s Jesus Christ).
I would classify this lady as an extreme fundamentalist who honestly believes that she is doing more good than she actually is. In fact, this type of wackiness just feeds the flames of anti-christian, and anti-religious commentary.

December 26th, 2008 at 7:29 pm
T. Mason is usually my problem. Her and Separate Man. T is a good person and Man is a partisan-type. Christopher said it extremely well, I concur.
This Thomas woman is just playing a game of ‘Look at me’ and she should be fired if she cannot abide by her employer’s will. Same if your job tells you have to say Merry Christmas. Woman is just making a stink to be like O’Reilly and those fools. Thing is the whole ‘war on Christmas’ ideas came from racists and bigots who wanted to smear other faiths and traditions to create a white nation of Christians. So this lady and all the other evidence-lacking Christmas defenders are really supporting racism and religious segregation.
To bad such things earn you big ratings in America. Alan could pick a extra million folks if he started a ‘War on Hanukkah’ thing. People still love to buy garbage and tell us it’s gold. Really confusing for real Americans.
December 26th, 2008 at 8:41 pm
Just another example of stifling one’s ability to express their belief. If she had worn a button that simply said “Happy Holidays” I wonder if her boss would have had a problem with it?
POSTED BY BLISSFUL CONSERVATIVE(FORMERLY T.MASON)
You would probably want to stifle my beliefs because they threaten traditional religious views. If she wore a pin saying ‘I love you’ or ‘Happy Holidays’ or anything non-religious then nobody would complain. How about ‘Islam is Almighty’ or ‘There is no God’? Would you defend someone wearing those pins in a workplace? Expression of our beliefs is not related to the work environment. We are free to practice and speak all we will in our private lives is different. She should under any decision her employer decides upon. In our private homes we can worship golden calves or Jesus or pine trees or money or whatever.
Like the new name, T.
December 26th, 2008 at 8:54 pm
I thought that the “Happy Holiday” stuff REALLY came about because retailers wanted to stretch the holiday buying frenzy from Halloween through New Years.
Actually, I’ve always said Merry Christmas, even though these war on Christmas people have made it sound like something ugly and belligerent……almost like, “MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!…..I dare you to knock this chip off my shoulder!”
December 26th, 2008 at 9:40 pm
The lady had to be a lousy worker to get fired singing that song. They found a reason and fired her. Petty, yes ! They had a right doing so. STEVE everyone and i wish you a merry Christmas and a happy new year. Fire me,hahahaha.
December 26th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Hey Mark.. oh yeah she had a great xmas. Hope you and yours had the same.
December 27th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Is she putting Christ(Christ-like) back in Christmas? “You are saved through faith, not of works, least any man should boast”
December 27th, 2008 at 1:26 am
She was a lousy worker. They fired her.
December 27th, 2008 at 7:39 am
Eric,
I don’t care what your pin says. If this were an atheist, buddhist, muslim, hindu, wiccan, the outcry would be deafening.
There IS a war on Christmas. Are you a Christian? If not, I would ask you to take a step back and look at it from the other side (if that is possible).
Deborah,
Saying Merry Christmas IS recognizing Christ if you feel it in your heart. That has nothing to do with works.
December 27th, 2008 at 9:35 am
The war with Christmas seems to be in the hearts and minds of some Christians. I have not experienced this at home or on my travels. It’s interesting these Christians have chosen the word, WAR! I am a Lutheran!
December 27th, 2008 at 2:26 pm
In other words you are saying that it is in their imagination. I have told at least 3 clerks this year, “Merry Christmas”, know what their answer has been? “Happy Holidays” or yes maam, you too. No “merry christmas” has been returned to me.
I guess it is my imagination that my kids do not sing Christmas Carols at school that have anything to do with Christ, that groups want nativity scenes banned from courthouse lawns, etc, there was a lady who was fired from Lowe’s for wearing a pin that says “It is Merry Christmas, for Christ’s sake”. I can go on and on.
but then again, it is just my imagination.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:37 pm
I sang the song before at work and they told me to quit for singing lousy. I really don,t think this is a war on XMAS concerning this lady. They found a reason to fire her and i said before, that was very petty. Just enough to fire a lousy worker.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Like I said before:
“I thought that the “Happy Holiday” stuff REALLY came about because retailers wanted to stretch the holiday buying frenzy from Halloween through New Years.
” I’ve always said Merry Christmas, even though these war on Christmas people have made it sound like something ugly and belligerent……almost like, “MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!…..I dare you to knock this chip off my shoulder!”
Now it’s taking on a confrontational feel, a far, far cry from the ‘peace on earth, goodwill towards men’, feel it had before the manufactured outrage industry.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:49 pm
She had to be a really bad worker. Hahaheheha. I can not help myself.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
Maybe it’s my Energy that invites Merry Christmas in return. T. Mason….”I will pray for you!”
December 27th, 2008 at 2:56 pm
I agree with you Go Cards!. I think the company was looking for a reason to get rid of her and used this as an excuse. Methinks they were unpleased with her work performance.
December 27th, 2008 at 2:59 pm
All three of our Grandchildren had Christmas Chorus concerts in school. Guess the “WAR” hasn’t reached my neck of the woods! Thanks for the Day. It was Good!
December 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm
I believe Christmas is the day we celebrate Christ’s birth (although it’s not his actual birthdate); I don’t care if we (Christians) allegedly ’stole’ the season of the pagan-oriented winter solstice festival. I respect the Jewish celebration of Hanukah (sp??) as I respect all Jewish holidays as the root of Christianity is in Judaism. I respect those who honor nature and the changing of the seasons (note I say honor here, not worship!).
I say Merry Christmas to everyone, including my clients… until the day my boss says “When speaking to customers you must say ‘Happy Holidays’”… at that point I will live according to the principles of Christ’s teaching – the one I’m celebrating – and will submit to those in authority over me. This woman was fired for insubordination – no more, no less.
Yes – I’m sickened over the secular society that the USA is quickly becoming, but as Christopher put is so eloquently if we fail to speak the truth with our lives then what comes out of our mouths is nothing but dung.
Merry Christmas!
December 27th, 2008 at 8:26 pm
Wow. I guess maybe you think you are a better Christian or something? Don’t know how you gauge that, but whatever. We can all use all the prayers we can get.
My kids had a Christmas concert too. A band concert. But they didn’t sing songs about Jesus’ birth. BIG difference between a concert with secular music and songs that are religious in nature.
December 27th, 2008 at 9:22 pm
Well, Blissful, in case your response was directed to me, then I’ll respond. If not then feel free to ignore.
I don’t think that true Christians would ever dare to judge who is a “better Christian”. I personally feel that I am the least worthy of the blessings I’ve received in my life; I have to seek forgiveness on a daily basis and usually it’s because of my judgemental attitude toward people with whom I disagree. I’m just a nobody who chose to receive Christ as my personal Savior and who tries to live according to His statues – a task at which I often fail miserably, but nevertheless I try.
If I offended you then I apologize.
December 27th, 2008 at 9:42 pm
Nope, was directed to Deborah. Forgot to mention that. Apparently she has better energy than me, so she is going to pray for me.
December 27th, 2008 at 9:50 pm
Now your getting it T. Mason! Happy New Year!
December 27th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
Oh yes Deborah, thank you oh great one. You are so much better than me. Good gravy. Are you for real?
December 27th, 2008 at 10:13 pm
I work in a nursing home and people come their to preach and sing XMAS songs. No 1 got fired or protested againist GOD. She had to be a lousy worker and perhaps a lousy singer as well.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:21 pm
Go Cards,
You aren’t going to sit there and say just because your nursing home lets groups come in a sing to patients that there are not businesses/entities that discriminate against saying Merry Christmas, etc?
December 27th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
No 1 ever ? or became upset in my 12 years of service their about Xmas songs and GOD. Yes, i am sitting their saying that watching a football game as well with a ice cold beer in hand. I am not anti-God and he is my savior. This lady had to had issues and a they fired her. I live in Kentucky and you where raised to sing Xmas songs and i still believe in Santa as well.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:47 pm
If you work IN KY in a nursing home, then I am not surprised. YOu live in the Bible belt. Move around a little, get exposed and you will see. Things aren’t everywhere else, like they are in the south.
December 27th, 2008 at 10:55 pm
Been half way around the world. Lived in CA,ILL and the Buckeye state for 14 years. Born and rasied in little ole Cynthiana,Ky. for 18 years. 60 miles from Cincy,OH and 30 miles from Lexington,KY that is my present location. I moved around at 18 by joining the Navy and became very thankfull being exposed than just looking at the souths point of view on everything.
December 27th, 2008 at 11:17 pm
I’m glad to know that so many here knows my work performance. Just to let everyone else in on it. Since this company bought out my old company that I’ve worked at since July 07 I have never been written up or reprimanded for anything. So much for your theory about my deserving to be fired for poor work performance and there must be more to this.
Alas, but there is more to this. I was misquoted when I said I didn’t recognize any other holiday..it should have ended “in December”. Still I misspoke and should have expressed to the reporter that I don’t celebrate any other holidays in December. I obviously recognize there are other days in December that other people celebrate or else I wouldn’t have minded saying “Happy Holidays” because there would only be one. That is where I feel like the “intolerance” is being focused. I’m tolerant of other peoples religions and I’m not offended that people believe things other than what I believe. As a christian there is no other God to me other than Jesus and Christmas is when we celebrate his birthday(no matter the factual birthday). I didn’t intend to offend anyone or seem intolerant or preach from my job-that is why I wanted to answer the phones with no holiday script-that way everyone “should” be happy. I offered and was denied that opportunity.
My job was more than answering the phones. Some have referred to my “simple” job of answering the phones and made the comments that I should be able to find another job easily with that skill level required. I was in the office I worked 90% of the time by myself. I not only answered the phones but did all AP/AR, leases, customer service requests from owners and tenants-we managed over 200 properties from this office alone, believe me I wish all I did was answer the phones.
I just wanted to explain some of the mistakes to the story that have been the focus of the story. The real story is the intolerance of an employer when I made a sincere request to not offend anyone, hold true to my God and say our generic phone script. Also, no one seems to be appalled that as I was gathering my personal belongings on my desk that Andy Phillips-President of Counts Oakes Resort Properties said to me “Tonia, we are going to have a Very Merry Christmas here at Counts Oakes, are you going to have a Merry Christmas with no job?”-Was that taunting really necessary or was that over the top? Then he called the police to have me “escorted” out for “refusing” to leave. I was getting my stuff so I could leave. I was the only person other than him in my office so I couldn’t have been disturbing the office ofr causing a scene. Who was the audience?
I’ve read more hypothesis on my work performance-which is impeccable-I promise there is nothing in my file that states otherwise. Why would they let me have the responsibility of being in the office by myself if there was “multiple incidents of gross misconduct”? Why wasn’t I ever written up or fired before this? So many people have focused on what I must have intended and have completely lost all common sense to ask these questions. In the end I hope the truth will come out because then all the negative comments about me will be rectified.
As a christian I do not believe I’m better than anyone. That is some peoples perception of christians who are happy and talk about their God and the blessings he gives or there dealings with another “christian” person. I hope that these people and everyone will find the peace that comes with this faith and understand that it’s not about status on this earth, it’s about eternity and the heaven promised after this life ends.
All I requested was tolerance of our celebration of Jesus’ birth. I was denied that, then fired, then ridiculed for my faith-no one deserves that. I feel that by secularlizing Christmas-by saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas is defying and denying my God by not giving him praise on one of the most holy days. The same tolerance non christians request (by not being preached to at work about God)is all I requested by asking to answer the phones with no holiday greeting-a reasonable request, I think.
December 27th, 2008 at 11:49 pm
If you are the person that got fired we are debating on this blog, then sue. I believe in GOD,but i would have raised hell if i was the 1. I strongly feel that no 1 should imposed GOD on me and anyone being a non believer as well. I am sorry for saying you are a lousy worker, but no 1 knew to debate this issue. Satan comes in all directions. However being a believer,i strongly believe in seperation of church and state.
December 28th, 2008 at 1:14 am
That is exactly why I offered to say a non-holiday greeting so as not to offend anyone. Believers and non-believers alike. If the company was so concerned with offending callers then why was that option-not an option? This is one point that seems to be overlooked in this story and seems reasonable to accomodate both sides of the issue.
December 28th, 2008 at 1:19 am
Workers with “impeccable” work performance record, an asset to the company with the ability to multi-task must be easy to find in your area. It has seemed far fetched a Company would want to lose that kind of worker over a telephone Holiday greeting. I would think they would want conflict resolution before losing that kind of worker. Good luck dear with your job search.
December 28th, 2008 at 10:14 am
There is no war on Christmas. As stated by someone else its a “national holiday” that is not warfare. Schools that are funded by PUBLIC funds have to adhear to separation of Church and State. If you dont like it send your children to a christian school. The courthouse is a state institution which also must adhear to separation of church and state. This lady should not have been fired for saying Merry Christmas, but perhaps they fired her because she was too militant for the company. The war on Christmas is nothing but cry babies echoing what Bill-O says-get a life and a thought of your own. There is not a war against Christmas.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:07 am
Ike,
Are you saying kids shouldn’t be allowed to sing Christmas songs that celebrate the birth of Christ, simply because they are in a public school? Sounds like stifling of free speech to me at the very least. 20 years ago, it wasn’t a problem. Now you have atheists and other groups forcing THEIR lack of belief down everyone’s throat.
The courthouse is a state institution that follows a lot of laws laid out in (drum roll) the BIBLE. If that is the case, and as you stated they must adhere to separation of church and state, I will assume that you agree that the atheists should shut up and take down their sign.
Too militant for the company? yeah, she said something that they thought might be politically incorrect.
Your eyes are closed and so is your mind. The separation of church and state did not intend to stifle anyone’s ability to exercise religious freedom. THAT is the road we are headed down. You are guarnateed freedom OF religion, not freedom FROM it.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:14 am
I think there should be no religious material in front of any courthouse-no matter what religion. That is the separation of church and state. I do not think children should sing religious Christmas songs in school, santa coming to town is not religious. Having children sing a religious christmas song at a PUBLIC school is forcing christian beliefs down other children’s throats. The children have every right to sing and believe what they want at home, church or any other place that is not paid with tax dollars from the entire community. No one is saying you cant believe what you want and express it, I am saying in a Publicly funded place it is not appropriate-no matter whose religion it is. The separation of church exists to protect people from having others values and beliefs imposed on them. You can love jesus all day and night and no one will take the cross off your necklace, but you do not have a constitutional right to have a nativty scene in front of a state building or a public school.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:28 am
Real Deal – I appreciate your zeal but you have to know that you are subject to the authority of your employer. Unless an employer asks you to do something that is illegal, unethical, or immoral then you are to do whatever is requested of you while you are on their time. While ‘Happy Holidays’ grates on my nerves at times because it breaks with the nation’s tradition of ‘Merry Christmas’, do you really think that Jesus wants us to put that much weight on mere words? Yes, Jesus is Christmas but He is so much more than that. There are battles that are worth fighting and then there are those that are not. If you live your life so that Christ is visible in and through you then don’t sweat the words. Mother Teresa said it best… “Preach the gospel at all times, and if necessary use words.” So live Christmas every day of the year – your life speaks much more loudly than words.
Merry Christmas to you, and may the coming new year be full of blessings and opportunity for you to share your life with those in need.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:41 am
Ike,
What are your thoughts on prayer rooms for Islamic students?
December 28th, 2008 at 11:45 am
My thoughts are in a public school religion should not interfere with the childrens learning. I have no problem with anyone’s religious beliefs however in a public school no one should accommodated unless everyone is-therefore no one should be. If a parent is not happy with that take your children elsewhere. School choice.
December 28th, 2008 at 12:08 pm
blissfull says:
“The courthouse is a state institution that follows a lot of laws laid out in (drum roll) the BIBLE.”
I ask: just what would those laws be?
The biblical idea of ‘justice system’ is casting lots(rolling dice), I don’t see much ‘justice’ there; mostly luck.

What is the holiday? Seems only those opposed to Christ are allowed to be offended. I too am offended by “happy holidays” You get Christmas gifts not holiday gifts, it’s a Christmas tree not a holiday tree. You anti-Christs are merely part of prophesy being fulfilled. Thank God we sill have people that put Cristian values above the mighty dollar!!

December 28th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
Question: If we are to have a STRICT separation of church and state with no forcing of religion down the throats of the unbelievers, then why the heck is Obama having a CHRISTIAN minister say a CHRISTIAN prayer and place his hand on a CHRISTIAN BIBLE at the inaugeration for the highest office in this separation of church and state land?
This was not a problem in the past, as I have stated earlier. The problems started with the pc bullcrap and not wanting to offend anyone. If you live and breath you are going to offend someone. that is a fact.
December 28th, 2008 at 11:39 pm
“why the heck is Obama having a CHRISTIAN minister say a CHRISTIAN prayer and place his hand on a CHRISTIAN BIBLE at the inaugeration ”
It’s his choice. It is not required. The tag line: ‘So help me god’ is not part of the oath of office and not required either.
He (Obama) is doing it because 1)It’s pro forma. 2) It’s expected 3) He is aware that a portion of the population is still ignorant and things he’s a Moslem.
December 29th, 2008 at 12:17 am
This whole ” war on Christmas” crap is something conservative talk show hosts and preachers use to excite their dull-witted followers. What this story infers is that she was fired for “insubordination”. Since none of us were there to witness the CONTEXT of what she was doing, we have her claim she was supposedly discriminated against for saying ” Merry Christmas”. And she would not have a reason to lie, right? Sorry I’ve met a number of such devout Christians in my life as a Pagan to not take her at her word. Even as a Pagan I have no problem someone wishing me a “merry Christmas” or ” happy holidays”. HOWEVER, the “merry Christmas” greeting can be abused by these supposedly pious followers, as a form of alleged protest against this imaginary ” war on Christmas”.
I’ve seen so-called Christians deliberately incite and intimidate in what they claim is discrimination against their religion WHILE AT THE SAME TIME these folks discriminate against everyone NOT of their faith. They have a hypocrisy about attacking Halloween in the schools yet they want Christmas in the schools. They attack Halloween while claiming Christmas is under attack.
I find it ironic that they yowl about how Christmas is so badly treated while these hypocrites try to silence Halloween.
Happy Holidays INCLUDES Christmas, not excludes it. Her attitude in not wanting to use the inclusive message tells me she doesn’t want to acknowledge other faiths share the holiday season as her religion.
December 29th, 2008 at 12:20 am
If she couldn’t or wouldn’t follow instructions, she should have been fired.
December 29th, 2008 at 2:55 pm
