Burris To Be Seated

AP is reporting that Democrats will accept the appointment of Roland Burris to fill the seat vacated by Barack Obama.  Seems Democrats are looking for a graceful way out of this mess.  It helped that California senator Dianne Feinstein, who chairs the Senate Rules Commitee, said on Tuesday that Burris should be accepted.  Meetings are going on today to work it all out.

  1. Even if there had been a serious way to block him indefinitely, we all need to try to understand. Try, try, try to understand: he’s the Magic Man. Have a Heart and give him a chance.

  2. Blago won this round BIG. He did his job, Secy of State Lewis did not, the Senate Leadership did not initially.

  3. Blago won this round? This shouldn’t be about Blago, period. There was nothing illegal about this man (burris) and he should have be able to take his seat.

This is mud on the dems face for causing a stink over the wrong thing.

Why aren’t the dems putting limitations on caroline kennedy, like they have said they will do to burris?

  4. What a way to start the New Year. I have so much confidence in the Dem Congress right now…

  5. Have to agree with Bliss. The dems denied to seat him because his credentials were not valid due to no signature from the Illinois Secretary of State. Very weak. Although I still think Blago should have resigned, he did not. He is still governor and he made his pick. The Illinois Secretary of State does not have constitutional authority to essentially veto the governor’s choice by refusing to sign the credentials.

What a can of worms that could open up if a state’s secretary of state happened to be a member of the other party and just refused to certify a governor’s appointment!

  6. This thing with Burris is just a game playing delay tactic.

    They will seat him.

  7. Stop calling him the magic man, thats too close to a magic N**** But hea, liberals get a free pass on racism anyways.

  8. I agree with Blissful on this one. Not sure about the Kennedy thing but as far as Burris, he appears to be clean and this appointment is still within Blago’s power.

  9. Separate man

Burris called himself the “magic man” yesterday at a news conference. I believe that was what WFG was referring to. A little quick with the race card, yeah?

  11. Its actually a fairly straightfoward situation, Do we follow the letter of the law? Or do we let Harry Reid make arbetrary decisions for the rest of the nation?

Are there actually any legitimate Reasons not to Seat Burris? If not, step aside Reid and let the law stand.

  12. Sure seat him, whatever. But Dems are not raising the wrong issue. Raising the wrong issue would be talking about state-wide corruption when charges are being placed against one single Governor. I believe ‘most corrupt state of the nation’ was uttered by BlissCon recently.

Seat me while we’re at it. The Senate has long been a place for rawkus debate and little progress of anything but the most Washington-approved bills (credit market bailout) and new blood will hopefully make them actually do their job. But if I was under charges for massiv buisness corruption and appointed my next chairman as scheduled in the corporate agenda like no charges were filed then conservatives would be able to understand these objections raised against Burris. Since it’s a govt matter it becomes raw political and we all miss the point. Blago said he wouldn’t do this, then he did.

Lil’ Miss Kennedy should be seated too. Why not? He are throwing anyone and everyone into the Senate like having empty seats is as bad as having an absent President. Anyway, this crud is why we are not a democracy nor an represenative republic but rather an oligarchy. Bush, Clinton, Bush, Kennedy, Clinton, Bush with some burps of Carters and Obamas here and there.

  13. At least burris has a little experience. what does kennedy have? a book, a volunteer, a mom. Oh yeah, A NAME

  14. Blago the thug and i agree with you Lady BLISSFUL as well. Miss Kennedy should go back to Park Ave. No paper work ,no senate seat. Stevens,Jeffferson,Craig and Blago. Abuse of power and both parties are extremly guilty. Will the bleeding ever stop?

  15. Blago sure is putting the big embarassment gorilla on the backs of the democrats. Chuckle, chuckle.

Harry Reid is acting like the Senate dictator. Almost a fillabuster proof senate. That is dangerous for our country to have one party have that much power where they can ramrod their agenda through the Congress.

  16. Almost a fillabuster proof senate.

Does anyone know if the senate ever actually makes the senators talk and talk and talk, i.e. actually go through with filibusters – or does just the threat of a filibuster kill legislation?

  17. [...] Like it or not, it looks like there’s nothing anyone can do to keep Roland Burris from filling Obama’s Senate seat. Alan explains why it’s time to accept the [...]

  18. Look, i don,t like my it right wing buddies, but what about Stevens before you start spraying the airfreshner?

  19. Can’t remember the specifics but when we learned about fillabuster’s way back in my high school government class the teacher had an example of some senator actually just opening up a phone book and start reading it cover to cover. I guess the point was to make it as boring and ridiculous as possible.

  20. In today’s world we haven’t had a true fillabuster for a long time. Watch the movie, “Mr. Smithe Goes To Washington.” That is a true fillibuster.

  21. When I think of someone in the senate creating a fillabuster, I think of the teacher from Ferris Bueller’s day off….”bueller, bueller” “anybody, anybody”

  22. I like that movie with Eddie Murphy being a senator myself.

  23. lol,
Ferris Bueller’s day off. I have not thought of that movie in a while. Reminds me of High School as it came out when I was in 10th grade.

  25. “”In today’s world we haven’t had a true fillabuster for a long time. …”"

    Lol. Willy is correct.

What is used now, ( almost 100 times by the Republicans in the last 2 years) is the “painless’ filibuster whereby the Senate withdraws the voting on anything that is not expected to garner the 60 votes required to end a “old school” filibuster.

The effect is exactly the same.

As Um Cara posted, the threat is enough.

  27. PLACEFIELD, Murphey reminded me of the crooked buffoons in Washington on both sides of isle and Murphy was a crook as well in that movie.

  28. Cheers Place, naw, no concern – I learn alot about Canadians online too…we live in igloos and use sled dogs…stuff like that

  29. Actually Sarah Palin should run up here!

Hockey, Hunting (from helicopters yet!) and now it turns out her daughters BF’s mom sell drugs!

Canadians love their dope, I always hear, lol

I just think that Sarah Palin shouldn’t have let her grandson be named “Tripp”…

You can’t make this stuff up!!

  30. I am from Illinois. I am more than ready to kick G Rod to the curb. I could go on for hours about him. Burris I don’t know much about. I know he has been elected for other stuff in the state. He has never had any problems. I feel that as long as he was not involved with G. Rod let him serve. If we don’t like him we can get rid of him in a couple of years. Beside everyone will be watching him. One step out of line he is done for

  31. Again with palin’s kids and grandkids. When are you going to stop bringing up her children?

  32. FROSTY,

So, now Palin is going to be held to task for something someone completely unrelated to her or her family is doing? Wow…the left just doesn’t give up, do they?

At what point does this type of invasive “journalism” become just plain ol’ crap? Oh, yeah…it started about 2 years ago…I remember it like it was yesterday…

  33. I can’t stand Palin… I mean I REALLY can not stand her. But who cares what her daughter’s boyfriend’s mom does (or doesn’t do, as far as I know).

I agree w/ those calling for folks to lay off her family. Hell, unless one is from Alaska, I don’t know why Palin would even cross your mind any more – much less her family, or the parent’s of the boyfriend of someone in her family.

It’s like Kevin Bacon has been replaced by Palin in the 7 degrees of separation game…

  34. Um Cara said: Does anyone know if the senate ever actually makes the senators talk and talk and talk, i.e. actually go through with filibusters – or does just the threat of a filibuster kill legislation?

    Um,

There is a rule currently in place that creates a sort of “virtual” filibuster. No one has to stand around and talk. They, instead, declare a particular rule in play and all walk out. The legislation is stalled but no one has to camp out and take the floor…

  35. Um,
    You captured my viewpoint perfectly

  36. I personally try not to think of Palin; however, I doubt she will let us all forget her. She will be rearing her head, kinda like Putin rears his head, in 2012 for her run for the Rep. nomination. GO Palin and Joe the plumber, what a ticket!
