Labradoodle Or Portugese Water Dog?

That’s what it boils down to for the first dog choice.  Daughter Malia is allergic to dogs, so they need one that’s allergy-proof.

The Portuguese water dog, which doesn’t shed, is among the breeds the American Kennel Club recommends for those with allergies. A seafaring breed that has been known for centuries along the Portuguese coast, “it was prized by fishermen for a spirited, yet obedient nature, and a robust, medium build that allowed for a full day’s work in and out of the water,” the Kennel Club writes on its Web site.

The Labradoodle is obviously a Labrador-Poodle mix.

Originally the brainchild of an Australian breeder who needed a service dog for a visually-impaired woman whose husband had dog allergies, it is now bred around the world. Its temperament is “clever, sociable, comical, joyful, energetic when free and soft and quiet when handled,” according to the Web site of the Australian Labradoodle Association of America.

The AKC isn’t so sure about that choice.

“‘Designer dogs,’ often mixed with poodles, are not recommended for allergy suffers due to their unpredictable coat,” the Kennel Association wrote in a recent news release posted on its Web site when the Obama dog search became known. “There is no way to guarantee a litter will produce puppies with equal Poodle coats, making the high prices unjustifiable and the claims of these dogs being ideal misleading at best.

Whichever the choice is, let’s hope it’s a shelter dog rather than one from a breeder.

  1. Portuguese water dog would be a more international choice ,labradoodle sound a little, well;[gay].

  2. I think the president of the US should have a dog which is not a fake dog. And a labradoodle sounds like a fake dog. When the blog’s spellchecker doesn’t recognize the name of the breed, it’s probably a fake dog.

  3. They could never be bothered with pets before, but now, you know, gotta do what everyone else in the White House does and get a dog! Work that phony image angle. Maybe Daddy can steal Hillry Clinton’s dog if she has one.

I think a snake would be a more appropriate pet for the Obamas anyhow.

  4. uh, isn’t there a Israel/Hamas thing going on? And this is news how?

  5. Distractions from everything that IS important. israel kindergarten bombed, palestinian doctor allegedly FAKES CPR on 12-year-old on video for CNN, John Conyers doesn’t approve of Sanjay Gupta, democrats not happy with obama’s economic plan, new york times article about israel and iran, obama still wanting to have “talks” with iran, blago, richardson, etc. etc. etc.

but yeah, let’s focus on the dog.

  6. Labradoodle is too cutesy of a name. I hope they go with a Water Dog from a shelter as you recommended, Alan.

  7. “Distractions from everything that IS important”

Well, Blissful, you can always visit a right wing site.

  8. I have bought dogs from breeders and shelters (same breed) and by far the shelter dog communicated alot better and without a doubt I would go to a shelter again for another maybe in the near future.

  9. Well that combo may be kinda of hard to find per just my occasional glancing at the Petfinder.com site. Too bad they hadn’t thought of or considered a beagle (not sure if they are hypoallergenic dogs) because a lot of shelters seem to have beagles or beagle mixes.

Alan best of luck in whatever you decide to do by the way. AND THANK GOD U are Hannity free (LOL)!!!

  10. Obama likes water, take the dog that likes water. I have to agree with the right on this issue. The 1st dog. It,s for the kids. They have no concept worldly issues their dad has to deal with.

  11. “Distractions from everything that IS important”

Lighten up a little. This isn’t Law & Order SUV. And on his radio show Alan has always given time to stuff that is NOT ripped from the front pages. That sometimes includes porn stars and hookers, psychics, toothless hillbillies storing strange things in their backyard freezers, truck drivers and cabbies, pet trainers, spiritual advisers, mediums, peaceniks, celebrities without causes and causes without celebrities.

  12. PortuLabraDoodleDandy, who really cares except for the mainstream media love affair. We have two wars and an economy to worry about right now.

  13. Good grief. This is just a TINY little example of what we’re up against for the next 4 years. (It WON’T be 8!!)He’s not even inaugurated yet and it is making me crazy.

Who the hell cares what kind of a flippin’ dog they get? I don’t and neither should anyone else with a functioning brain.

We have far too many other things to worry about. Like if we still own a house in a year or two, or have a job or medical insurance, and oh, yeah, the wars and the economy….the crooks in congress, the new/old cabinet picks, on and on, like a bad rerun playing over and over and over on tv. It reminds me of something straight out of “The Twilight Zone.”

But go ahead, waste time in the media on a stupid dog story. That’s actually a more appropriate story for the media, as it is one I think they can handle and perhaps actually get right, unlike everything else in this past election cycle.

I agree with whoever said a snake would be a more appropriate pet, except for the fact that the little girls are still innocent. Not for long though, around all the corruption of their parents.

Look at all the time I just wasted making these comments when I DO have better things to do!

  16. Mary you know good and well on that “things to do list” it says… “Make liberals laugh” so you can put a check by that item. MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!! ooops bad pun.

  17. As long as it is a shelter dog, unlike Biden’s pick.

Now Willy, you’re not supposed to say this until the day after January 20, 2009. Right now we have more important things to worry about, like Rev. Wright.

  19. I have to go for the Labradoodle, because I love the name (I’m a woman, I like adorable names, I can’t help it) and they are cute as hell.

  20. “”Who the hell cares what kind of a flippin’ dog they get? I don’t and neither should anyone else with a functioning brain.
We have far too many other things to worry about.”"

I agree with you, Mary, that George aWol Bush has left the country in a heckuva mess. His tax cuts for the wealthy have been a disaster for everybody but, well, the wealthy. His unecessary and misguided war has left the US near bankruptcy and heavily indebted to China, poised to become the next superpower.

His failure to act, or allow others to act, to stave of the impending financial crisis has cost millions of americans their jobs and many their houses (Lots of good deals to snap up for the opportunists though!)

…And his failure to act, and prepare, for Katrina (including under funding the levies for years…have left many people…,well, kinda dead and homeless.

And as a final punch in the face to the 85% of Americans who range from heavily critical, to outright horrified, at his policies and inaction….he now thinks his biggest mistake was not landing Air force One for a photo op (?!?), and his biggest ‘disappointment’ was that our so-called enemies weren’t armed with WMDs after all!

    (great job Brownie)

  21. Wow, so much wrath over a dog! LOL!

You will be surprised that I don’t disagree with everything you say…

But it sure seems like over the many decades I’ve lived and before that the history books, every President has made major errors. To put it mildly.

I supposed the Obamas getting a dog gives us all something else to argue about. :)

I know none of us will ever agree and that’s just how it goes. Nothing worse than arguing politics or religion, eh?

Yesterday was the first time I’d ever posted on one of these sites (political type, not dissing one side or the other), and anyway, I have to say it has been eye opening.

When posts are respectfully written, I have a lot more respect for the writer’s opinion than I do the ones who outright tell you to not let the door hit your arse on the way out.

Some of you try to be civil, others don’t even make the effort.

I know this post will be ignored or get a few scathing remarks from the die-hards.

BTW, I DO hope the Pres. elect is successful. I still stand by everything I’ve said, however.

    Bye.
