Senators Coburn And Nelson Sing Rocket Man

January 14th, 2009, 4:44 PM EST

Republican Senator Tom Coburn of Oklahoma bet Democratic Senator Bill Nelson of Florida on the BCS title game.  Like most Republicans this year, Coburn lost when the Florida Gators beat the Oklahoma Sooners 24-14.  To pay up, Coburn had to serenade Nelson with his rendition of the  70’s Elton John Classic.  Nelson is a former astronaut, and Coburn is a doctor.  Makes you wonder if Coburn had won, would Nelson have had to sing “Bad Case of  Loving You”.  Being a good sport, Nelson didn’t make Coburn go it alone.

Of course, it would be virtually impossible to top the 1978 version of the Elton John/Bernie Taupin song as interpreted by William Shatner.

  1. This is so very funny and painful all at once; like George Bush press conferences. You want to look away, but you can’t.

  2. William Shatner certainly has a flair for self-parody. He seems fearless in his ambiton to let the world know he’s inwardly laughing at himself. I agree with Alan; this is one interpretation of “Rocket Man” that’s hard to top in terms of how it can keep sticking in your mind!

  3. I have a copy of “Incubus”, Shatner in Esperanto. He is WILD.

    This has me wonder if we couldn’t raise money for Whirled Peas by having Alan and Hannity sing a song?

    “Love Will Keep Us Together”, one more time!

  4. Bob Brandon -

    Or like watching a Sarah Palin interview. Those were either painfully funny or painfully embarrassing.

  5. Alan I wish you luck with your new venture…won’t be watching…your abrasive way of talking during Hannity & Colmes was SUCH A TURN-OFF!

    Won’t be watching the ~ Billion dollar party for o’bummer…the money should be spent on your homeless {oops sri…most of them are illegals!}

  6. So THAT’s what they do in the senate… I always thought they did things like passing laws and such… Guess I was wrong.

    Seriously though, they sounded really gay. And they had to pick Elton John for their really gay singing? Pfft.
