Why I Like Michael Steele

Besides being a heck of a nice guy, the Republican former Maryland Lt. Governor isn’t afraid to stand up to his party, and he is critical of Chip Saltsman for his “Magic Negro” mailing.  After candidates for GOP Chair debated party issues at the National Press Club, Steele was direct when he spoke with Think Progress.

TP: A big theme on the panel today was how to get the GOP to embrace minority voters. Do you think that Mr. Saltsman’s CD that he released to the RNC members helps or hurts that effort?

Steele: Oh …

Leon Panetta To Head CIA

05panetta_190

Leon Panetta served as Chief of Staff to Bill Clinton and was a California congressman.  Obama wants someone with no connection to recent CIA controversies like its detention and interrogation programs following September 11.  That means a relative CIA outsider like Panetta rather than Obama’s initial choice, John. O. Brennan, who had field experience but too many links to the past.

In disclosing the pick, officials pointed to Mr. Panetta’s sharp managerial skills, his string bipartisan standing on Capitol Hill, his significant foreign policy experience in the White House and his service on the Iraq Study Group, the bipartisan …

Carolyn Maloney: If We Can Have A President Named Hussein, We Can Have A Senator Not Named Kennedy

untitled

Carolyn Maloney has served in the House representing Manhattan since 1993.  She is also going around New York state and meeting with officials.

“We’re in a world financial crisis,” she said. “China and Germany bailed out their auto industries. It was the right vote.”

The nation’s economic crisis calls for experienced leaders who can hit the ground running from day one, Maloney said.

“I’ve been a city councilor, I’ve been in Congress for 16 years,” she said. “I know how to win campaigns. This is a different selection. I have a record to run on. If I’m chosen, I …

Bush Sr. On Bush Jr.’s Failures: Go Back To Your Google

Poppy Bush told Chris Wallace on Fox News Sunday that 43 will come home “with his head high knowing he ran a clean operation and kept this country strong and free…”  When asked if there were any things for which he could be fairly criticized, 41 suggested we use the Google for that.

Wallace: You said there earlier there are some things he could fairly be criticized for. Would you like to tell me any of those?
Bush: “No. You can go back to your, what do you call it…. Your Google, and you figure all that out.”…

God Tells Pat Robertson America Will Accept Socialism

1_61_robertson_pat

America is headed for Socialism, and also an economic rebound under Barack Obama.  That’s what Pat Robertson says God told him.  The preacher told his “700 Club” audience that the stock market will start to rebound by the second quarter.

“I say with humility, I hope I’ve heard the Lord. I spend time praying and asking him for wisdom and if there’s a mistake, it’s not his fault, it’s mine,” Robertson said.

Robertson said on New Year’s Day that “nothing will stand in the way of a plan by Obama to restructure the economy in the same …

Obama To Propose Massive Tax Cuts

Let’s see the cons go after him on this one.  Up to $310 billion in tax cuts will be proposed for businesses and the middle class as part of a stimulus package.

Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell voiced concerns about how quickly Democrats may try to push a stimulus package and what spending proposals may be included in it. He also suggested federal funds be loaned rather than given to states.

But McConnell said Obama could ultimately win broad Republican support if Republicans are provided a fair opportunity to shape it.

Other priorites will include:

Bloodied Bodies Of Hamas Leader’s Children Paraded Through Streets

article-0-02ee7859000005dc-597_468x305

Nizar Rayan (r), his four wives, and ten children were killed in their home after they ignored warnings of a strike.  Thousands of Hamas supporters marched in the streets with mourners holding up bodies to the cameras to underscore Israel’s brutality.

Israel’s military says the homes of Hamas leaders are being used to store missiles and other weapons, making them a legitimate target.

Rayan, an influential preacher, had previously denied Israel’s existence and was a known mentor of suicide bombers.

He even sent one of his sons on an October 2001 …

Bill Richardson Withdraws Commerce Bid

The New Mexico governor will not go up for Commerce secretary.  It has to do with a a grand jury probe into a pay-to-play allegation concerning a California contractor who gave money to Richardson’s political endeavors.  CDR Financial Products gave $110,000 to three committees formed by Richardson and won a bid to help finance a $1.6 billion New Mexico transportation program.

“Let me say unequivocally that I and my Administration have acted properly in all matters and that this investigation will bear out that fact,” he said Sunday in a report by NBC News’ Andrea Mitchell. “But I have concluded that the ongoing investigation also …
