The cereal company will let Michael Phelps’ contract expire at the end of the month because of the bong hit seen ’round the world.  Kellogg says this in a press release:

“Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract.”

Phelps also cut a deal with Subway and recorded some commercials.  It’s not now clear if they will ever air.  I understand how some companies strive to maintain a family image.  However, would people stop eating Kellogg brand cereal if Phelps were still on board?  Would their image be forever tarnished?   Kellogg signed Phelps to keep him off the Wheaties box.  But are athletes what sell cereal?

UPDATE: Michael Phelps has been suspended from compeitition for three months by USA Swimming, and thay have cut off financial support for that period.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” the federation said in a statement.

That’ll teach young people not to do bong hits!
