Troy Brisport picked up a woman in Detroit when she told him she had no place to stay.  After falling asleep in his car, Brisport drove her to Toledo and held her hostage in his apartment for four days.

[Shykea] Boykin told police that after she fell asleep her alleged abductor handcuffed her wrists and ankles, gagged her, undressed her and put her in an adult diaper, then read Bible passages, said police Capt. Ray Carroll.

Court documents say Brisport tried to suffocate Boykin with a pillow and blanket, tried to choke her and put a towel over her …

Cartoon Portrays Monkey As Stimulus Bill Author

18delonas2_480

Sean Delonas’ New York Post cartoon is, sadly, just another in a series of insensitive attempts at humor.  Delonas has equated gays with those who love sheep too much and has portrayed al Qaeda as celebrating Democratic victories. Now, for some reason a chimpanzee is the author of the stimulus bill.  Al Sharpton, a frequent Delonas target, accurately asks, “What does shooting a chimpanzee have to do with a stimulus bill?”  Shaprton also issued this statement:

The cartoon in today’s New York Post is troubling at best, given the racist attacks throughout history that have made African-Americans synonymous with …

In North Dakota A Fertilized Egg May Soon Be A Person

zygote_1116

The North Dakota House of Representatives voted 51-41 to give fertilized eggs the same rights as people.  Representative Dan Ruby (R-What a Shock) sponsored the bill, and says, “This is the exact language that’s required by Roe vs. Wade. It stipulated that before a challenge can be made, we have to identify when life begins, and that’s what this does.”

This would mean, subject to it passing in the Senate and being signed by the governor, that abortion would be akin to murder. Governor Mike Rounds signed an abortion ban in 2006, so he would likely look favorably upon …

Aerosmith To GOP Rep: Stop Using Our Music

dvd-music_aerosmithblackinthesaddle2008palmdvdr

House Minority Whip Eric Cantor put out a video to brag about the Republican opposition to the stimulus package, using the song “Back in the Saddle.”  But Stage Three Music, which owns the rights to the song, is claiming copyright infringement.  Elana Schor at TPM surmises that maybe they thought it was okay because Joe Perry endorsed McCain last year.

The GOP’s use of the tune “was something we, as the publishers, didn’t approve and would not have approved without going to the writers,” Connie Ashton, director of copyright and licensing at Stage Three, told me. “Aerosmith did not approve …

GOP/Democrats Split Over “Truth Commission”

Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont and Congressman John Conyers of Michigan, chairmen of the Senate and House Judiciary Committees, are the biggest proponents of establishing a “truth commission”to investigate BushCo.

Investigations are not a matter of payback or political revenge,” said Conyers. “It is our responsibility to examine what has occurred and to set an appropriate baseline of conduct for future administrations.”

There’s “an oversight responsibility that has to be carried out,” Leahy said, adding that he wants to discuss the idea further with Obama.

Obama, who says he’s “more interested in looking forward than looking back,” says …

More Troops To War In Afghanistan

gyi0056751991h2

President Obama is responding to what he is being told by generals on the ground, that more troops are neeed to shore up a deteriorating effort in Afghanistan.  Approximately 8,000 Marines followed by 9,000 Army troops are slated to arrive by the time the weather warms up.

The Rand Corporation think tank says a game-changer is needed in Afghanistan, and Obama says a resurgent Taliban with support from al Qaeda is a threat to our safety.  But he is also saying the military is not the only answer.

“I’m absolutely convinced that you cannot solve the problem of Afghanistan, …

    Does Cheney Despise Bush?

    bushcheney

New York’s Daily News is reporting that Dick Cheney went to the mat in an attempt to procure a presidential pardon for his former chief-of-staff, Scooter Libby.  President Bush continued to deny the request, and eventually refused to discuss it with his VP.  Libby was convicted of perjury and obstruction of justice in the Valerie Plame investigation and Bush commuted his 30-month prison sentence to keep Libby out of jail. This, however, was not enough for Cheney, who is described as “outraged”.

The unsuccessful full-court press left Cheney bitter. “He’s furious with Bush,” a Cheney source told The News. “He’s …

    The GOP’s Disconnect

    17repubs_600

While Republicans in Congress are busy bragging that they are the Party of No, Republican governors (Jim Douglas, VT; Jodi Rell, CT; Charlie Crist, FL; Arnold Schwarzenegger, CA, above)  are solidly behind the Obama/Democratic stimulus plan.  These are people who, unlike legislators and talk show hosts, have executive positions and actually have to run things.

Governors, unlike members of Congress, have to balance their budgets each year. And that requires compromise with state legislators, including Democrats, as well as more openness to the occasional state tax increase and to deficit-spending from Washington.

Across the country, from California’s Arnold Schwarzenegger …

House Republicans Want Stimulus Bill To Fail

How else do you explain the bragging by House GOP whip Eric Cantor that not one Republican voted for the stimulus package?  The blog on his website exults, “The House GOP is back.”
