That would be Senators Arlen Specter of Pennsylvania and Susan Collins of Maine. Word is they’re close to a deal for the stimulus package. And all for a thrifty $805 billion. And guess how they came to an agreement? More tax cuts!
As part of the deal, spending in the bill was reduced while tax cuts were increased, for a mix of 58 percent spending and 42 percent tax cuts. A senior Democratic leadership aide said the White House was on board.
With Specter and Collins onboard, they have the 60 votes they need. Now we just …

Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan told radio host Bill Press, when asked if it’s time to bring back the Fairness Doctrine, that “it’s absolutely time to pass a standard.” Stabenow ought to give full disclosure whenever discussing this topic. Her husband, Tom Athans (with Stabenow, r), has been an executive in various liberal talk radio ventures.
SENATOR DEBBIE STABENOW (D-MI): I think it’s absolutely time to pass a standard. Now, whether it’s called the Fairness Standard, whether it’s called something else – I absolutely think it’s time to be bringing accountability to the airwaves. I mean, our new president …
US Will Continue Renditions, But With No-Torture Assurances

We will continue to hand detainees over to other countries, but only if we’re assured they won’t be tortured. That’s what potential CIA director Leon Panetta told a Senate committee. Panetta says he’ll seek the same kind of assurances the Bush administration did. The problem with that is, how can we believe the assurances? Just one day ago, Panetta said the Bush administration transferred prisoners for the purpose of torture. Now he’s retracted that remark, saying, “I’m not aware of the validity of those claims.”
But former prisoners who were victims of what is known as “extraordinary renditions” say they …

Are you hanging on to a job you can’t stand because it’s the only option you have? Have you been downsized financially? Are you one of the lucky ones in boom times? Six hundred housand jobs were lost last month, and 3.6 million since the beginning of the recession. This is the worst it’s been in three decades, with half of the layoffs in the last three months. The Bureau of Labor Statistics puts out the numbers, and it looks horrible on paper, but how is it affecting you personally?…

The cereal company will let Michael Phelps’ contract expire at the end of the month because of the bong hit seen ’round the world. Kellogg says this in a press release:
“Michael’s most recent behavior is not consistent with the image of Kellogg. His contract expires at the end of February and we have made a decision not to extend his contract.”
Phelps also cut a deal with Subway and recorded some commercials. It’s not now clear if they will ever air. I understand how some companies strive to maintain a family image. However, would people stop eating Kellogg …

The conservative bogeyman of the day is the Obama choice for Deputy Attorney General, David Ogden, for the egregious offense of being “pro-abortion” and “pro-homosexual.” Let’s put aside for the moment that no one is “pro-abortion,” with the possible exception of the Chinese government, and that the position is more accurately expressed as “pro-choice.” And let’s put aside the inanity that somehow being “pro-homosexual” is a bad thing, as if hating gays would somehow be a defensible position.
Ogden, whose hearings are taking place today on the Hill, has represented companies like Playboy and Adam & Eve, has headed Justice’s civil …

WaPo’s E. J. Dionne reminds us how the GOP is expert at making its case to the media using clever tactics. They focus on minor parts of the stimulus package and extrapolate them as though the represent the whole thing. They define it by repeating over and over again issues that concern less than 1% of the bill. Obama has been focusing on how the bill enhances health care, education, energy and relief to financially suffering states. Republicans say it’s a spending plan, not a stimulus plan, but the whole purpose of stimulus is to spend now for greater results …
