Vermont Could Be Third State To Approve Gay Marriage

There will be hearings this week in the state that, in 2000, was the first to grant civil unions to gays.

Democratic leaders, who control both chambers of the Vermont Legislature, pledged earlier this month to pass a gay-marriage bill before adjournment in May. The State Senate judiciary committee is taking testimony on the legal, social and practical implications of same-sex marriage and is to hear from the public Wednesday night at the State Capitol.

Governor Jim Douglas, a Republican, says civil unions go far enough, but it’s not clear if he’d veto a gay marriage bill and, if he does, …

Speaking to 400 people and Washington and Lee University in Virginia, Justice Clarence Thomas was quite critical of Americans.  Thomas, who declines most invitations to be interviewed or to appear in public, said, “Our country and our principles are more important than our individual wants.”

He quoted President Kennedy’s famous, “Ask not what your country can do for you” speech, but said Americans today are more likely to say, “Ask not what you can do for yourselves or your country but what your country can do for you.”

When Barack Obama referred to some Americans as being bitter and clinging …

White House Doesn’t Take Cheney Slam Lying Down

White House press secretary Robert Gibbs was prepared when asked about Dick Cheney’s criticisms of the administration.

Gibbs defended Obama, saying he is keeping the nation safe while dealing with problems George W. Bush’s administration did not.

“Well, I guess Rush Limbaugh was busy,” Gibbs said to laughter during his daily briefing with reporters. “So they trotted out the next most popular member of the Republican cabal.”

In response to Cheney’s suggestion that the White House is trying to take advantage of the economic crisis to expand government, Gibbs said, “I think not taking economic advice from Dick …

But What Do You Really Think, Senator?

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) has some strong words for AIG executives. As the Politico reports, he told Iowa radio station WMT:

“The first thing that would make me feel a little bit better towards them if they’d follow the Japanese model and come before the American people and take that deep bow and say I’m sorry, and then either do one of two things — resign, or go commit suicide.

Of course, his press flack says the senator was only speaking rhetorically:

In response to a POLITICO inquiry, Grassley spokeswoman Jill Gerber clarified Grassley’s comments, saying “clearly he …

Save Chrysler?

chrysler-logo

In a New York Times interview, Chrysler CEO Robert Nardelli says that if the government doesn’t loan the troubled automaker an extra $5 billion now to avoid bankruptcy, it will soon cost five times more – $25 billion – to rescue his dying company:

In Chrysler’s restructuring plans, submitted to the Treasury Department on Feb. 17, the automaker estimated that it would require up to $25 billion in government assistance if it were to file for bankruptcy protection.

“Why would the government want to spend $20 to $25 billion, when you can spend $5 billion?” Mr. Nardelli said.

Nardelli …

Meghan McCain To Laura Ingraham: “Kiss My Fat Ass”

Meghan McCain appeared on “The View” and responded to radio host Laura Ingraham’s recent comments about her.  After Meghan wrote that Ann Coulter should not be the face of the Republican Party, Ingraham mocked her in a valley girl voice calling her “plus-sized,” and saying no one would be talking to her if she weren’t the daughter of John McCain.

INGRAHAM (mocking): Ok, I was really hoping that I was going to get that role in The Real World, but then I realized that, well, they don’t like plus-sized models. They only like the women who look a certain …

Seattle P-I To Be Web-Only

logo_seattlepost-1

Just a couple of weeks after the announced demise of Denver’s Rocky Mountain News, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer is stopping daily publication as a printed newspaper and will become a web-only daily.

…the P-I, as it is called, will resemble a local Huffington Post more than a traditional newspaper, with a news staff of about 20 people rather than the 165 it has had, and a site consisting mostly of commentary, advice and links to other news sites, along with some original reporting.

SeattlePI.com gets 1.8 million unique visitors per month, while its print edition had a daily circulation of …

During a performance at Feinstein’s at Loews Regency in Manhattan, comedian Jackie Mason referred to President Obama as a “schwartza,” offending a number of audience members, one of whom said that Mason was, at least that day, “more offensive to the Jews” than Bernie Madoff.

TMZ spoke with Mason, who defended his use of the word by criticizing black comedians for how they talk about whites.

…”Chris Rock has told a lot more jokes about whites than I have against Blacks. What about the demeaning words Blacks say about Jews?”

Mason added, “If it’s a racist society, …
