Souter to Retire

souter

The Supreme Court is losing one of its four reliably liberal members. This is expected to be the only retirement of a SCOTUS justice in 2009.

Souter was apparently satisfied that neither the court’s oldest member, 89-year-old John Paul Stevens, nor its lone woman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, who had cancer surgery over the winter, wanted to retire at the end of this term. Not wanting to cause a second vacancy, Souter apparently had waited to learn his colleagues’ plans before deciding his own.…

Carrie Prejean Doesn’t Think Being Gay Is Natural; But, Then, Neither Are Her Breasts

carrie_prejean

Not that there’s anything wrong with that…unnatural breasts, that is. Access Hollywood reports that the California Miss USA Pageant paid for her breast implants.  Shanna Moakler, co-executive director of the pageant organization, supported the surgery.

“It was something that we all spoke about together,” Shanna said referring to herself, Carrie and Keith Lewis, Shanna’s co-executive director. “It was an option and she wanted it. And we supported that decision.”

Moakler likes Prejean’s breasts more than she does her answer to the gay question posed by Perez Hilton.

“The night of the show, I wrote Carrie and I congratulated Carrie …

Do You Avoid Washing Your Hands When No One Is Looking?

specter927

Some folks only wash their hands when they fear being caught not doing so would render them not fit to be in public.  Arlen Specter washed his hands…of the Republican Party, but doesn’t necessarily engage in that activity when he is in the lavatory. In his defense, he does carry Purell, hand sanitizer to the stars.…

Andy Borowitz Is Hilarious

Joe Biden is being quarantined.

Taking his most urgent action to date since cases of swine flu were first reported, President Barack Obama today ordered an emergency quarantine of Vice President Joe Biden.

Mr. Biden was in the middle of giving a wide-ranging television interview on swine flu preparedness when he was seized by representatives of the Department of Homeland Security and placed in quarantine.

“I’ll tell you this, if I thought I might catch swine flu by going to work or a movie or the mall or something like that, I sure as heck wouldn’t -” …

GOP Using Image Of Burning Pentagon To Scare People

They continue to play the fear card.  They are telling us we’re less safe after 101 days of Obama. They invoke images of 9/11 to imply he’ll cause another one.  They are shameless.

The image of the Pentagon in flames on 9/11 appears for just an instant at 1:14 in the video, and it’s spliced with images of flag burning protesters and other violent footage from the Middle East.

House Minority Leader John Boehner defended the video today, saying it was perfectly fair game.

“What is the overarching strategy?” Boehner asked. “I’m trying to push the administration …

Elizabeth Edwards: “I Cried And Screamed, I Went To The Bathroom And Threw Up”

alg_elizabeth_edwardsjpg

After former Senator John Edwards told his wife of his affair, which was a year before it became public, Elizabeth Edwards went to the bathroom and threw up. In her new book, Resilience, due out May 12, Edwards talks of publicly standing by her husband’s side, even as he initially lied to her about the affair he was having with Rielle Hunter.

Edwards says he shouldn’t have run for president, as she knew all along this would come out, and she was correct that when it did become public, her husband’s political career was over.

Hunter initially …

Rick Sanchez To Jim Demint: “What The Hell Does That Mean?”

Rick Sanchez asked South Carolina Senator Jim Demint about how the Republicans are shrinking the electorate to where a regular Republican can’t win.  Demint answered by saying, “The biggest tent is freedom.”  Sanchez said what every viewer was thinking and every interviewer often wants to ask: “What the hell does that mean?…You’ve got to better than that!”

I’m Really Glad Pepsi And Snapple Are Now Using Cane Sugar

image_pepsiretro1

But does it really make any difference?  Is high fructose corn syrup really worse for you than sugar? And is there any taste difference?

The major argument for designating HFCS as an artificial product relies on the long list of chemicals used to convert corn starch into fructose and glucose. (Two of those chemicals can transfer trace quantities of mercury into the finished product.)  At least one part of the process makes incidental use of a toxic, synthetic fixing agent called glutaraldehyde.
