Rudy Avoids Gay Roomates’ Wedding
When things weren’t go so well in his marriage to Donna Hanover, Rudy Giuliani lived with two gay men, Howard Koeppel (left in photo) and Mark Hsaio. They got married this weekend in Connecticut, and invited their former rommie to be part of the small group of attendees.
“Rudy and Judith were both invited with a beautiful written invitation by mail,” said Koeppel. “His secretary called Thursday and said he was not able to come to the wedding and wished us all the best.”
Koeppel once quipped that Giuliani was a perfect roommate who “always made his bed” and “called me mother.”
At the time, Giuliani ducked the question about whether living with a gay couple had changed his longstanding opposition to gay marriage.
“I don’t relate to people as white, black, Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, gay, lesbian, heterosexual,” the then-mayor told reporters at Gracie Mansion.
Giuliani has vowed to speak out agianst gay marriage if he runs for governor of New York.

Most gays are so much smarter than the average Bubba the northeast can’t lose by passing same-sex marriage laws, and New York should pass a law now.

The voters amended your state constitution Eric. How are you going to repeal it? You will need another amendment to your state constitution. Your state supreme court didn’t overturn it because of that.
You can try, but I won’t wish you luck.

Thanks the gods!
Someone needs to put their well-shod foot down and stand up for freedom! There’s a wind that’s a’blowin’ – a “gay” wind – and Rudy is just the champion America needs to stand up for the sacred institution of marriage!
C’mon Mr. Guiliani, the tides of change are starting to wash upon our hallowed shores of decency, in a great flood of gayness, and you’re just the man to step forward and put your foot in it!

He put his principles first obviously. If he doesn’t agree with gay marriage and chose not to go for that reason he wasn’t playing politics. That’s called actually standing for what you believe in.

I see. If he stands for what he believes in which is marriage between a man and woman then he is currying favor to the right wing base. But if a liberal attends a gay wedding ceremony then they are standing up for what they believe in.
Double standard? Yep. Ignorant observance? Yep.

I say, “keep it up, Rudy! The country is taking a more tolerant stance in favor of gay marriage and your antiquated beliefs that gays are not entitled to the same rights as straight people will surely hand the election to a liberal”.

Would you say ‘good for him’ if he ditched out on a straight wedding? I doubt it.

What I meant to say, EricG, is Rudy should keep up his stance on a dying principal. If Giuliani chooses to speak out against gay marriage, he will surely lose the election to a more liberal democrat or independent.

Guiliani is just trying to up his PR for talk shows and books. The idea that he could EVER hold office again after his 2008 no-starter presidential bid is ridiculous.

I’ve always wondered what ‘exactly made this unpleasant little thrice married adulterer “America’s mayor” anyway. He stood up on his little elevator shoes surrounded by burly police officers and shoook his umbrella at some unseen, unknown enemy, and encouraged everyone to go out and spend their savings and rack up their high-interest credit cards to “save NYC”?!
You’re going to defeat the terrorists by buying $800 ‘designer’ handbags made in Malaysia, and a slightly cracked Lady Di plate off Ebay?
People were desperate for a hero, of any stripe, and since their commander-in-chief had summed it up thusly ” …and I saw an airplane hit the tower – the TV was obviously on, and I use to fly myself, and I said, ‘There’s one terrible pilot.”
With that type of deep insight coming from DubYa, I suppose Rudi did as well as any for “leadership”…
And now to hear that the angry little priapic dwarf is going to “speak out” against the right of 30,000,000 of his fellow Americans to enjoy the same right to a loving relationship as the rest?
That takes the cake, it really does…
“That’s one terrible pilot!”
Good grief.

If this were a story about a pro gay, ANTI hetero marriage politician who lived with a hetro couple when he needed help, and did not go to their wedding because it was not PC with HIS base, it would get as much or more coverage from the right.

blissfulconservative Reply:

Yes it is that he didn’t show up. The last time I checked we are free to attend or not attend events. Right? I guess not.
Like I said, if this had been his heterosexual friend who got married this wouldn’t be reported. I notice the above post didn’t say WHY he couldn’t/didn’t attend. YOU and others want to label him anti-gay or a bigot because YOU want to judge.
OldLefty Reply:

Of couse you are free to attend or not attend events, (another strawman argument), but when you are a politician, who took helped from people when you needed them, and did not attend because it would offend your base, the press is free to point it out.
Like I said, If this were a story about a pro gay, ANTI hetero marriage politician who lived with a hetro couple when he needed help, and did not go to their wedding because it was not PC with HIS base, it would get as much or more coverage from the right.

It is YOUR opinion that is why he didn’t attend. Where has he said that?
And it isn’t a strawman argument. If you want politicians to have a backbone, that means they should be able to choose to be on the opposite end of the spectrum than you and NOT be demonized for it.

Jon Meachem actually said,
“In the essay I argued that two things were going on in American religion this Holy Week. First, that new (and newish) data suggested that the percentage of Americans who self-identify as Christians has been falling, albeit from astronomical heights to semiastronomical ones.
The second point is that the political project undertaken by politically and theologically conservative Christians in the wake of Roe v. Wade—what we call, in cultural and political shorthand, the rise of the religious right—has failed”
