Dijon-Gate

May 8th, 2009, 12:04 PM EDT

Conservatives have gone over the edge. They don’t know how to win elections, but they certainly know how to attack a Democratic president.  The fallout continues from the Obama/Biden Tuesday foray to Ray’s Hell Burger.  Wingnuttery prevails, as Obama is attacked for ordering his burger with DIJON MUSTARD! as one blogger blares; a condiment that must have been ordered, it is claimed, in consultation with John Kerry.

Obama also offended the Bama-bashers for leaving $5 in the tip jar.  Furthermore, MSNBC is accused of covering up dijon-gate by not covering the mustard order.  And there’s a pattern here, reports legalinsurrection: one of Obama’s favorite dishes uses Grey Poupon.  And, the conservosphere screams, his love of this elitist condiment goes back to 1997!

In the summer of 1997, as he was finishing his first term in the Illinois State Senate, Barack Obama and a young legislative aide made an exploratory tour of downstate districts. When they stopped at a T.G.I. Friday’s, Obama ordered a cheeseburger, and when the waitress brought his food, he asked for Dijon mustard to go with it. “He doesn’t want Dijon,” the aide insisted, waving the waitress away, and shoving a bottle of French’s Obama’s way. The waitress was confused: “We got Dijon if you want it,” she said.

Thankfully, at least one winger gets it, the pointy-headed law professor at Instapundit.  But Obama doesn’t stop at using the offending mustard on burgers. It is used in one of Obama’s favorite lunch recipes.

President Obama’s Tuna Salad
Tuna
Grey Poupon mustard
Mayonnaise
Chopped gherkins

And, so, can Gherkin-gate be far behind?

Out of power where they should be, too. Not that many people actually buy the BS that conservatives are doing anything good for the nation.

Only the uncrackable, unflappable are still on this kick and they never listened to reason in the first place.

Don’t drop the Iraq line on me TDro. Obama has now spent more tax dollars than ALL FORMER PRESIDENTS COMBINED.

And yet you sat silent while Bush ran up the debt. I guess Clinton is your fav modern day president, ’cause he left with a budget surplus, no? Oh and Saint Ronnie? He ran up deficits too.

    Daddio Reply:

No I didn’t set silent while Bush ran up his debt. I was very critical of his administration for not weilding his veto pen on the many spending bills put before him by the Republican led Congress. Bush had a rubber stamp Congress just the same as Obama now has a rubber stamp Congress. This madness has got to stop.

To be truthful, the surplus during the Clinton years was not because Clinton wanted to refrain from spending. It was the Republican Congress that forced him to. You won’t agree with that but spending started to decrease after the 1994 elections.

    Daddio Reply:

Actually, for the record, a President cannot spend one red cent. All he can do is submit a budget with what he wants to spend. Congress has the power of the purse. Congress can tell the president no or can revise his budget. So calling it Reagan’s debt or Bush’s debt or even Obama’s debt is really putting the blame on only one responsible party. And, by the same token, calling it the Clinton surplus is also not totally true.

    OldLefty Reply:

Obama is doing EXACTLY what the people elected him to do.
The main point is that the American people understood that Bush and the GOP were like bunch of unruly kids who stayed in the house and caused HUGE damage, and now money HAS to be spent to clean up the mess.

As of 2005, according to the Treasury Department, from 1776-2000, the first 224 years of U.S. history, 42 U.S. presidents borrowed a combined $1.01 trillion from foreign governments and financial institutions, but in the past four years alone, the Bush administration borrowed $1.05 trillion.

Reagan tripled the deficit then raised taxes.

The problem is that conservatives never have a problem borrowing and spending as long as the government is redistributing the wealth from the middle class upwards.

Obama is at least investing in America.

Politicians don’t learn. They think they have a mandate to do what ever their little ol hearts desire when elected.

Obama was not elected to go to Washington and rack up record debt and deficits. He has not explained to the American people how he plans to repay all that debt. I wouldn’t be too quick with the Gollum comparison. If you recall, Gollum actually saved the quest from disaster.

Frodo had made it to the Crack of Doom and was supposed to throw the Ring into the fire, below. He didn’t. Instead, he fell to the Ring’s sinister influence. If not for Gollum, everything would have been lost.

#1) That’s the opinion of the 27% who believe that the GOP ever paid more than lip service to “values”.

#2) What does that have to do with the fact that we were dismissed by the conservatives when we expressed concern about one party rule, based on the so called “values of the GOP?

#3) The Lord of the Rings analogy seems much more descriptive of the GOP. Funny when the movie came out, a lot of people equated the Bush administration with Mordor .

  16. RDM,

Again, this study comes from the Mercatus Center at George Mason University, which is a very conservative group.
They boast Wendy Gramm, (wife of Phil Recession Is “Mental,” America Is “Nation Of Whiners” Gramm,) and of Enron fame.

They are very vague about defining “personal freedoms”.
This organization is much more concerned about the personal freedoms of corporations.

I think if you are gay, you feel you have more personal freedom in Massachusetts, or if you were the Mathis Family, and Bush took your property, you might not be impressed with your personal freedoms.

    RDM Reply:

Well then, you admit that liberal(nanny states) states Are freer than conservative states when it comes to same-sex partner policies and marijuana.

That’s certainly not anything new. Just like most people on Liberaland are against gun owners.

Note: Texas has one of the smallest state governments in the country.( Now you know for me to say the word small is hard for a Texan to do).

Sarah Palin’s Alaska does extremely well on personal freedom. Reasons for its high score:
-fully legalized possession of small amounts of marijuana(accomplished through a court ruling)

-the best(least restrictive) gun laws in the country

    -recognition of same-sex domestic pertnerships

-possibly the best homeschooling laws in the country.

< fully legalized possession of small amounts of marijuana(accomplished through a court ruling)

(Most conservatives are against this. I think they are just catching up to liberals)

< -the best(least restrictive) gun laws in the country

(State’s rights issue, as in not a highly populated congested urban area)

< -recognition of same-sex domestic pertnerships

(Better, not as free as marriage, plus conservatives are for domestic pertnerships because the tide turned, and they see as better than marriage: if liberals hadn’t pushed for it they would not be accepting it.)

<possibly the best homeschooling laws in the country.

(Not my cup of tea. but Good for them….I don’t know about the rest of Alaska, but Palin’s town of Wasilla was called a “drop out factory”.
Rural areas do tend to do more home schooling.)

  17. At least Obama is investing in America…

You mean; at least Obama is investing in American Government. Almost 14 million unemployed, 72,000 new government jobs, 66,000 of which are cenus takers(temps). 206 million paid in bonus to Fannie Mae & Freddide Mac, 800 more new jos now needed for the IRS to police his new tax ideas.

Yes, he is investing in growing government but not much has been done yet for small business America.

    Need a job, call Acorn.

From the Bureau of Labor Statistics:

U.S. Unemployment Rates Under President Bush Continue to Climb

Actually the right is so angry at Obama because he is investing more in small business than in those 400 richest people whose incomes doubled under Bush.
Bush was the one who wanted those “with poor credit “ to get mortgages, because Wall street more mortgages.

Fannie and Freddie were about 30% of the problem.
I’ll take ACORN over Diebold , Katherine Harris, and Kenneth Blackwell any day.

In fact, two of the nine U.S. Attorneys who were fired in 2006 were targeted because they refused to bring criminal charges against individuals affiliated with ACORN.

Iglesias said that Republican officials in his state were far less interested in election reforms and more intent on suppressing votes.

He recalled that the Justice Department issued a directive to every U.S. Attorney in the country to find and prosecute cases of voter fraud in their states during the height of hotly contested elections in 2002, 2004, and 2006, even though evidence of such abuses was extremely thin or non-existent.

    GuidoVanHorn Reply:

    Lefty…

If you were the AG, and one of your assistants refused to do their job, what would you do?

You can argue if the Acorn individuals were guilty or not, but after reviewing the facts the AG felt they should have been tried…they might have been found innocent for all we know/care, but it’s an insubordination issue more than anything. Insubordination is a fireable offense at most places of employment.

    OldLefty Reply:

Not when they were fired because they woud not use the office for political prosecutions.

“I thought it interesting that a conservative state, with a conservative governor, is more liberal that you might think.”

Is it really a conservative v liberal issue, or is it a more libertarian ,and regional kind of thing…remember, the two senators from Maine are Republicans, but are considered liberal by conservatives.
There conservatives AND liberals for all these things,

    One could ALSO point out:

The Centers for Disease Control released a new report today that found that Mississippi “now has the nation’s highest teen pregnancy rate, displacing Texas and New Mexico for that lamentable title.” The report found that in 2006, the Mississippi teen pregnancy rate was over 60 percent higher than the national average, and increased 13 percent since the year before.
While the new report, does not explain why the state’s teen pregnancy rate is increasing, one reason may be the poor quality of its sex ed programs. As the Sexuality Information and Education Center explains, Mississippi focuses heavily on abstinence education.
    OR that:
The state with the lowest divorce rate in the nation is Massachusetts. At latest count it had a divorce rate of 2.4 per 1,000 population, while the rate for Texas was 4.1.

The lowest divorce rates are largely in the blue states: the Northeast and the upper Midwest. And the state with the lowest divorce rate was Massachusetts, home to same-sex marriage.
The rate in Massachusetts was 5.7 divorces per 1,000 married people, compared with 10.8 in Kentucky, 11.1 in Mississippi and 12.7 in Arkansas.

    OR that:

Red State Socialism: 84% Red States Take More Than They Give

Blue states (heavily Democratic) give more money to the government than they get back. Most of that money goes to red states (heavily Republican).

Ironically, if there’s a red scare here it’s the Republicans people should be afraid of.

27 of the top 32 states (84%) which GET more than they GIVE are Republican.

14 of the top 18 states (78%) which GIVE more than they GET are Democratic.

The Tax Foundation broke down the fiscal 2005 numbers and ranked the states based on federal outlays vs. how much tax money was sent to Washington.

While New Mexico, a blue state in 2008, ranked first, the states that finished 2-9 are all states that voted for John McCain: Mississippi, Alaska, Louisiana, West Virginia, North Dakota, Alabama, South Dakota, and Kentucky.

By contrast, the bottom 10 states (in order from 41-50) — Colorado, New York, California, Delaware, Illinois, Minnesota, New Hampshire, Connecticut, Nevada, and New Jersey — all voted for Barack Obama. In fact, all but one of the states that pays more tax than receive in outlays — Texas (35) — voted for Obama.
