Why Are Some Republicans Afraid To Say Sotomayor Is Not A Racist?

May 31st, 2009, 12:16 PM EDT

Newt Gingrich, Rush Limbaugh and Tom Tancredo have called Sonia Sotomayor “racist”, and Senator James Inofe (R-OK) has strongly implied it.  To his credit, Republican Texas Senator John Cornynhas repudiated these remarks, as have Senator Jeff Sessions of Alabama and South Carolina’s Lindsey Graham. But there are other Republicans lack the will to renounce them; or they truly believe Sotomayor is racist and lack the courage to say so.

Senator Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, the highest ranking elected Republican in America, said he had better things to do than to renounce this kind of language, when asked about it by CNN’s John King (h/t Think Progress):

MCCONNELL: They’re certainly entitled to their opinions. … Look, I’ve got a big job to dealing with 40 senate Republicans and trying to advance a nation’s agenda. I’ve got better things to do than to be the speech police over people who are going to have their views about a very important appointment.

And Texas Senator John Kyl refused to renounce racist claims against Sotomayor when asked about it by Bob Schieffer on CBS.

White males already are a minority. Heck, only about half of white people are even male. When you factor in the other races, it is quite obvious that white males are clearly a minority (and probably still will be in 2034).

Well the 2005-2007 American Community Survery by the U.S. Census Bureau disagrees. It has 74.1% of the U.S. population as identifying as white (one race). 5. A Correction: Jon Kyl was NOT sent to the Senate from Texas. He’s the junior Senator who supposedly “represents” us folks here in Arizona, though in reality he has represented nothing but the Growth Lobby (out-of-state Big Money that still wants to develop the desert for bringing in more people–as if we have enough water here to share with an ever-expanding population) ever since he bent over to get their PAC money stuffed up his bum to first win his seat in ‘94. He’s such a sanctimonious little worm!

  6. It has 74.1% of the U.S. population as identifying as white (one race).

Right. And half of 74% is 37%. Everyone not a white male is 63% That makes white men a minority.

Where is the ACLU when you need it?

    crh3e Reply:

Ok, when you take the total number of people identifying as white (one race)(221,457,175) and divide by two it equals 110,728,587.5. The total number identifying as black is 36,969,063. Total for Asian 12,951,215 and Hispanic or Latino (of any race) 44,019,880. So 110,728,587.5 is less than 36,969,063; 12,951,215; and 44,019,880?

There isn’t a majority when you slice the population into such small subsets.

So, add up all people who are:
