On Tuesday’s Radio Show…
• Alan discusses the impact of the GM bankruptcy with Lansing, Michigan Mayor Virg Bernero.
• How could anyone celebrate the murder of George Tiller? Alan confronts Wiley Drake, a California pastor who says Tiller’s death was an answer to his prayers.
• Conservatives are outraged at President Obama for saying that Iran may have a right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Alan attempts to calm their fears.

Good luck calming the conservative’s fear Alan. Godspeed.

Play a medley of clips from Reagan speeches. That stuff is like conservative prozac.

I have a feeling that if we could transport Alan back in space and time, to…. oh, I dunno let’s say ancient Rome… He, Alan, would have fiddled in accompaniment with Nero, while Rome burned……
And Joel would have produced it…
Hey Joel, play that Beach boys song tonight……”Wouldn’t it be nice if we were older?
Then we wouldn’t have to wait so long
And wouldn’t it be nice to live together
In the kind of world where we belong
You know its gonna make it that much better
When we can say goodnight and stay together
Wouldn’t it be nice if we could wake up
In the morning when the day is new
And after having spent the day together
Hold each other close the whole night through
The happy times together we’ve been spending
I wish that every kiss was never ending…
Wouldn’t it be nice?
Maybe if we think and wish and hope and pray… it might come true
Baby, then there wouldn’t be a single thing we couldn’t do…”

Alan Colmes himself is the one in the position to say whether he “is set for life.” (By the way: I’m not inquiring.)

I don’t see a problem with Iran using nuclear energy, but can they be trusted? Is it easy to tell whether they are making nuclear materials for a plant or for a weapon?
If it’s not easy to tell, maybe they should be prevented altogether.
The more important question: forget Iran, why the hell do WE not have a ton of nuke energy plants?! That’s the best solution for our energy crisis.
GuidoVanHorn Reply:

we do not have more nuclear energy because idiots like Jimmy Carter rise to power on occasion and shut down Nuclear incentive and make it extremely difficult to build new reactors, this includes governors and state legislatures that shut down nuclear energy under the guise of saving the environment.
I can’t remember the name of it, but Jimmy Carter changed one of the Aircraft carriers from a nuclear vessel to a diesel ship. That ship uses something to the tune of 500,000 gallons of diesel a day.
Nuclear energy can be dangerous, but fewer people have been injured and/or died at nuclear energy plants then people working at Coal energy plants since Nuclear reactors have started to be used. The one thing everyone neglects to realize is that no one died at three mile island, so even though it was a dangerous situation, it’s been proven we know how to deal with even catostrophic problems with nuclear reactors.
Chernobyl is a false argument, because the Russians were morons and took no precautions.
The pros of Nuclear energy
no carbon emissions
waste can be 100% contained (people will always bring up past issues, but they are largely in the past, new solutions and procedures completely contain spent nuclear material, in fact newer reactors produce even more energy with less waste than before.
Extremely high return on investment, both monetarily and watt per dollar.
Jobs, Jobs and Jobs…and well paying jobs at that.
Steady and reliable output of energy.
I live in one of the cleanest and cheapest energy areas of the country. with most of the energy mix coming from nuclear/dams/wind, with some people opting for natural gas.

I’ve seen this Bernero on TV before. I think it was CNBC or maybe even “FOX propaganda”.
I sent him an e-mail afterward through the Lansing city website and thanked him for his performance. Few public officials stand up for “Americans” anymore but he is. He’s defending Americans far beyond Lansing, whether he knows it or not. He’s defending middle America and the American middle class. The real shame of it is, he’s a lonely voice in the wilderness.
Colmes is a friendly enough audience but Bernero took the verbal fire from the rightwing , business friendly TV hosts and threw it right back in their faces. The man is unstoppable. And, he’s right.
It’s always odd to hear people call in and complain about how “rich” the $14 to $28/hr UAW wage is. Or, how the UAW retirees are too well off. It’s not rich, it’s middle class. It’s the kind of pay that’ll put your kids through college and pay for a decent, livable home. It’s the kind of retirement that keeps Alpo off the dinner table.
More odd, I have to conclude from some of the anti-UAW comments that the callers are making significantly less than $14/hr. Nothing is more sad than someone making $10/hr complaining the real problem is that others are making too much. That if the “overpaid” greedy ones accepted less, the “underpaid” would have more?
If the “overpaid” accepted less, the only thing that would change would be expanded bonus pools on Wall Street. If you’re a Wall Street banker, you can never make too much. If you’re middle class and in mfg, you can’t make too little.
“It’s a Wonderful Life”. The times change but people don’t. Our choice is between Bedford Falls or Pottersville. Pottersville is a sad place to live for most of us even as Mr. Potter lives in a nice mansion on the hill, telling us Pottersville is the only way we can compete in the global economy.

Three reasons: 1) envy; 2) poor mathematical skills; 3) little or no sense of economics.
By the way: Ralph Nader, interviewed at least twice over the last 18 months by Alan on his radio progam, has it right: there is no respect for workers in this country. What Mr. Nader could’ve also added is this: even the workers themselves lack respect for other workers in this country.

I agree with some of Pastor Drake’s sentiments but he’s a wee bit too extreme (or “fringe”) with imprecatory prayers against the President, believing the President is not U.S. born, etc.

I’m a 72 yr old woman who has seen alot. My grandmother and great grandmother were midwives. I agree it seems mostly men who are against choice for women. The younger ones now don’t remember how many women died from botched illegal or personal abortions when they were illegal. Also Dr. Tiller from what I’ve heard performed at least two kinds of abortions much needed. One on young age 10 or 11 girls who were raped or had incest committed on them and were too far along before it was discovered. The other was women who had fetuses that died in the womb and their drs. said they had to carry these dead “babies” for 10 or 12 weeks until they delivered. Dr Tiller felt these people needed his help. I definately want pro choice for women.
Keep the men and church away from women’s bodies. I think alot of men just want to keep women pregnant and barefoot – or at least make them pay for getting pregnant by forcing them to give birth no matter what.

HENRIE,
You’re wrong…Tiller also performed abortions mid-second trimester for those women who “still wanted to go to the clubs” or “wanted to participate in sports” and even more noble were the ones who “just didn’t like the idea of having a baby”.
Surely you’re not advocating abortions as an extension of irresponsibility?
You, and you left-wing buddies like to lecture the anti-abortion crowd about their perceived unwillingness to care for the already born children…but, let’s hear what YOU are doing for them.

“The other was women who had fetuses that died in the womb ”

is it really considered an abortion if the baby is dead?
This is the legitimate use of intact dilation and extraction, in order to retrieve the dead fetus. No one, even the most staunch anti-abortion activist, would consider this abortion.
My mother had this done on her 3rd child that died in utero, and my mother could be considered an anti-abortion activist.

In both of these cases, I would agree that termination would be appropriate.

oops almost forgot. How many of the pro life people have or will adopt or financially support all these babies. We have thousands in foster care now that no one wants. And all the millions in Africa and India who starve to death. Before they worry about unborn fetuses how about the ones already here????
And as for pro life too many are also for capital punishment, wars and pro guns. So much for “pro life”!!

GuidoVanHorn Reply:

estimates range from around 200-1000 preganancies per year are a result of rape (there are no good figures because it’s not required to state why you are having an abortion, 200 is the low and 1000 is considered a high number and are based on extrapolated number of rapes and the percentages that the rape could result in abortion based on other factors, such as natural and artificial sterility of victims, chance that the rape occurs during proper cycle time, % of rapes that actually have a semen exchange)
Some clinical studies suggest a number around 200 annually.
Incest is harder to figure and I haven’t found a study yet that makes a good case for the number they provide.

Obama says Iran has a legitimate right to produce nuclear energy, however Obama will not allow the US to use nuclear power to solve our electric energy problems.
Why is Obama catering to the Arab nations? Why is Obama ignoring Israel during this trip? Why is Obama pressuring Netinyahu to give up more land? Why did Obama bow to the Saudi King? Will he do it again?
