One Ayatollah Declares Ahmadinejad’s Election Illegitimate

June 14th, 2009, 10:40 PM EDT

Grand Ayatollah Yusef Sanei believes the Iranian election that is keeping Ahmadinejad in power was a fraud.  Andrew Sullivan picked up the story.

There are strong rumors that his house and office are surrounded by the police and his website is filtered. He had previously issued a fatwa, against rigging of the elections in any form or shape, calling it a mortal sin.

Sanei has spoken out in the past in favor of women’s rights and against Islam having nuclear weapons. A liberal Ayatollah? Who knew?

    Sanei be good!!!!

  2. Libs in Iran! One burning question in my mind: does Alan Colmes have an Iranian radio/TV show host counterpart?

    libpatriot Reply:

And if so, does that counterpart regularly get calls by an Iranian version of John the Trucker?

  3. Good night all.

    and Good night ayatollah.

The supreme leader has just called ofr an investigation into the election results.

    Let’s see where this goes.

How could this election be a fraud? After all didn’t ACORN register all of the voters first? :)

    OldLefty Reply:

Yeah but Acorn flags the registration forms, that look fishy, (they are not permitted to throw them away), and there is no one who actually tries to vote.

I think Iran may have had the Diebold machines.

    JFA Reply:

That’s it! Diebold machines. They’re not smart enough to operate them.

    OldLefty Reply:

You mean they did not have a ceo who was committed to giving the election to Ahmadinejad ??like :

COLUMBUS – The head of a company vying to sell voting machines in Ohio told Republicans in a recent fund-raising letter that he is “committed to helping Ohio deliver its electoral votes to the president next year.”

The Aug. 14 letter from Walden O’Dell, chief executive of Diebold Inc. – who has become active in the re-election effort of President Bush – prompted Democrats this week to question the propriety of allowing O’Dell’s company to calculate votes in the 2004 presidential election.

Yes, contrary to what you may think, Iran has the most compassionate people in all society.

Yet in study after study you find despite more than 5,000 years of human civilization, very little progress has been made- but, oh,oh, maybe now the freaky religous cults are actually going liberal. Yeah, they really care about womens rights and educating their children. I hear Aaytollah Cockamamie is supporting teachers unions.

    A liberal Iran? NOT!!

  6. They were more liberal with Mossadegh.

Good point, OldLefty. Too bad how that turned out.

  7. The Iranian democracy is a sham due to the existence of the “supreme ruler” position in that government. Iran will never be a truly free society unless that position is either done away with, or severely marginalized similar to the way the British monarchy is.

I don’t forsee that happining Michael. Unfortunately.

    Neither do I.

Seeking to stamp democracy in every corner of the globe while cultural/religious differences of various countries is a recipe for failure..

Unless you eliminate the brand of Islam that is pervasive throughout the middle-east, attempting to install western-style ‘democracies’ is foolish and unlikely to succeed.

We need to get out of the business of unilaterally installing our model on other countries and instead cooperate more within the UN and concentrate on fixing our own domestic problems.

  8. It’s 2000 all over again: the supreme decides.
So what’s all the outrage about?
    Iran is following our lead.
