Detainees In Bagram Hung From Ceiling And Beaten

All but two of 27 detainees at Bagram (right) in Afghanistan say they were mistreated, reports Think Progress quoting a BBC investigation.
Prisoners held at Bagram Airbase, near Kabul, claimed they were beaten, deprived of sleep, hung from the ceiling and threatened with dogs.
Four claimed officials had put a gun to their head and threatened to kill them.
None of the men held were charged or put on trial.
One inmate said: ‘They did things that you would not do against animals let alone to humans.
‘They poured cold water on you in winter and hot …

So, last night they find the car belonging to the South Carolina governor in a parking lot at Columbia’s airport, puncturing holes in the story of him going hiking on the Appalachian Trail (thus, avoiding “Naked Hiking Day“). Will Folks at FITSNEWS says he was outright lied to by the governor’s staff. But the staff may not have been told the whole story by the governor himself.
Palmetto Scoop has dubbed it “Waldogate.” And Gina Smith, a reporter for The State newspaper in Columbia got a few words out of the governor, prior to his 2PM news conference …

Just like his cheating colleague David Vitter of Louisiana, Nevada’s John Ensign was welcomed back into the senatorial fold with warm applause upon his return from announcing his infidelity.
Bob Corker of Tennessee was lauditory:
“I think he plans to be a very good senator from Nevada,” Corker said. “All I can say for sure is that it was very, very sincere, very heartfelt and very well received in our caucus. I just appreciate the way he was today, and I think everybody in our caucus does.”
John Cornyn of Texas was also beautifully forgiving:
“We …

The Republican Party is further marginalizing itself by trying to gather steam on the issue of whether President Obama was born in the United States. Are they trying to unseat him? Do they honestly think they can make the case that he wasn’t born here? Is it an effort to make Joe Biden president? One right wing website is offering $10,000 to anyone who can prove he or she was present at Obama’s birth. Congressman Bill Posey of Florida introduced a bill requiring candidates for president to present birth certificates to the Federal Elections Commission. And Think Progress reports that …

Neda, in death, has become an icon representing the changes sure to take place in Iran. A new video showing her just before being shot to death has emerged. She is seen next to a man who nursed her after she was shot.
Iranian authorities banned the family from having a memorial service, fearing it would arouse anti-government sentiments. Here is the video of her final moments. It may not be suitable for you if you wish to avoid graphic images.

First, no one could find the South Carolina governor. Even his wife didn’t know where he was. She says he told her he needed time away from the kids to “write something.” Oh yeah? On Fathers’ Day? Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer didn’t know where he was. His staff was hazy on the issue.
Finally, late Monday, Sanford’s press office released a statement saying he was hiking on the Appalachian Trail.
The whole thing has South Carolinians and their leaders scratching their heads.
Who is in charge now?
“I guess that’s a question a lot of us are …

Greg Sargent has the details of the RNC’s latest gaffe:
Earlier today, the Republican National Committee blasted out to reporters a research document with a link to an article in USA Today reporting that much of the stimulus package’s construction money will be spent in the districts of well-connected lawmakers.
The RNC document cited the piece to argue that the stimulus cash is nothing but pork and isn’t going where it’s needed. “Where Are The Jobs?” the document demanded. “Where Is The Money? Why All The Pork?”
But there’s only one problem: If you click through the …

I could never understand why people would want their personal lives splayed all over television. Narcissism, maybe? People magazine discovered that divorce papers were filed Monday in Pennsylvania to end the 10-year marriage of Jon and Kate Gosselin.
Fans who have watched the couple’s popular TLC show – or read the voluminous coverage of the Gosselin marriage in the press – will hardly be surprised: The duo had long maintained a tense relationship, with Jon recently telling PEOPLE he wanted a less high-profile life, while Kate appeared to remain committed to their TV career.
In February, photos surfaced of …
