Governor Sanford: Staying In Office Is God’s Plan

July 1st, 2009, 10:33 AM EDT

Governor Sanford, I beg of you, please stop waving God and the Bible in everyone’s face. We get it. You’re a pious, righteous person trying to do God’s will.  God didn’t want you to tell the whole truth at that news conference; He wanted to keep you in a fresh news cycle. God didn’t want  you on the Appalachian Trail. He wanted you in Argentina. God didn’t want your state or your wife to know where their governor/husband was. And God wants you to stay away from your soul mate and “try to fall back in love” with your wife.

Those people calling for your resignation aren’t in keeping with God like you are.  Who knows what evil forces are driving them?

“A long list of close friends have suggested otherwise – that for God to really work in my life I shouldn’t be getting off so lightly. While it would be personally easier to exit stage left, their point has been that my larger sin was the sin of pride.”

Yes, Marco. God is punishing you by directing you to stay in the governorship.  It is a difficult penance for you to have to keep your job, but continuing on as one of the country’s 50 state executives is just your cross to bear.

And even though Lt. Governor Andre Bauer may be South Carolina’s citizens’ true political soul mate, they can always try to fall back in love with you.

  1. Victim of God ?

This guy is really starting to bug me.

  2. Ok, Markie. Just like Sarah Palin, we don’t want you to go, we just want you to go away.

  3. Resign? Heck, no, he shouldn’t resign.

In fact, I want him center stage on the front cover of the NY Times every damn day just to remind the whole world exactly what the republikkkan party really stands for.

Come on, boy and girls. Applaud louder.

You may have a point there Rocky.

As much as I find this whole episode amusing, I think its wrong to suggest this is a trait of just the Republican party.

Given the history of plenty of Democrats, not least people like Al Sharpton, Jesse Jackson etc, I think the reality is that the joke is on the American people for creating this system.
Namely a system where an ex drug-addict isn’t allowed credibility to be ‘anti-drugs’ just as an ex-adulterer loses credibility in supporting family values, strong marriage etc..

In this country we setup our politicians to be perfect paragon’s of our desired virtues. The moment they show normal human lapses of judgement, they are invariably castigated and often ruined in their career, regardless of the actions/achievements in their job.

Personally, I think we need more of a ‘let he who is without sin, cast the first stone’ approach and stop the obsession with private lives of public figures.

  4. Governor, I am sorry, but us independents who do believe in God do not want to hear you invoke the name of God into your sinful life. It feels like you are attempting to read the Bible in San Francisco while making a dirty movie. There is nothing genuine about this after spending all week hearing about your affair.
Those of us who are faithful to our wives and children and church don’t really believe God spoke to you after your latest press conference. Please resign, good luck and God Bless. Nate

How about a Honduras coup story.

Yesterday Rush made a lot of claims about Zalaya refusing to abide by the constitution.
It was not a coup, according to Rush.
Fox news.com has a whole different take than Rush.

    Kregg Reply:

    From Foxnews.com –

“Zelaya “has already committed crimes against the constitution and the law,” said Micheletti, a member of Zelaya’s Liberal Party who was named interim leader by Congress following the coup. “He can no longer return to the presidency of the republic unless a president from another Latin American country comes and imposes him using guns.”

Soldiers stormed Zelaya’s residence and flew him into exile early Sunday after he insisted on trying to hold a referendum asking Hondurans if they wanted to reform the constitution. The Supreme Court, Congress and the military all deemed his planned ballot illegal.

Zelaya, who is an ally of leftist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, backed down from the referendum Tuesday, saying at the United Nations that he would no longer push for the constitutional changes he wanted.

One of several clauses that cannot be legally altered in the Honduran constitution limits presidents to a single, 4-year term. Congress claims Zelaya, whose term ends in January, modified the ballot question at the last minute to help him eventually try to seek re-election. Chavez has used referendums in Venezuela to win the right to run repeatedly.

    Exactly,

“Soldiers stormed Zelaya’s residence……” Sounds rather ‘coupish’ to me.

    Kregg Reply:

    From Foxnews.com –

“We believe that the coup was not legal and that President Zelaya remains the democratically elected president there,” Obama said in Washington. “It would be a terrible precedent if we start moving backwards into the era in which we are seeing military coups as a means of political transition rather than democratic elections.”

“Micheletti, speaking to Colombia’s Caracol Radio, insisted that it was Zelaya who had violated the constitution and that his court-ordered removal was legal.

“We have not committed a coup d’etat, but a constitutional succession,” he said.

“Congress and the Supreme Court accuse Zelaya of maneuvering to illegally rewrite the constitution — apparently in hopes of extending his rule.

K: If the Honduran Congress and their Supreme Court have the authority to remove a president then why is BO thinking it was illegal to do so?

    average james Reply:

    Is it legal ?

Micheletti says it is. Would you expect him to say any different ?

    OldLefty Reply:

Who says the Honduran Congress and their Supreme Court have the authority to remove a president….his rival?

    average james Reply:

    Yes Lefty,

    Damn good question, I think.

    Kregg Reply:

Lefty said: Who says the Honduran Congress and their Supreme Court have the authority to remove a president….his rival?

K: It’s a good question, but don’t you think we ought to find out whether they do or not before labelling what happened a ‘coup’? How about some good reporting on the issue rather than the breathless and vapid ‘oh, its a coup, its a coup, its a coup…”?

    Kregg Reply:

James said: Is it legal ? Micheletti says it is. Would you expect him to say any different ?

K: Foxnews.com has the Honduran Attorney General calling for his ouster BEFORE the congress and the Supreme Court got involved.

    average james Reply:

    Or Rush’s “it’s not a coup, it’s not a coup” ?????

    Um Cara Reply:

    For what it’s worth:

None of the Latin American leaders see this as a legal action. There has been universal denunciation of this event, and it is being referred to as a coup in Brazil as well.

    average james Reply:

    Um,

    That’s what I’m reading.

    GuidoVanHorn Reply:

I really wish I knew more about this, so I could make an intelligent response…

    Kregg Reply:

The dictionary defines a ‘coup’ as – “a sudden, violent, and illegal seizure of power from a government.’

K: My question: If the military acted on orders from the Honduran Congress and the Honduran Supreme Court, what was ILLEGAL about their removal of this guy?

K: Additionally: from Foxnews.com – The United States, which had privately expressed concerns to Zelaya about changing the constitution, has stood behind him since masked soldiers sent him, still wearing pajamas, into exile.

K: So, even BO knew that what the president was doing was illegal and against Honduras’ constitution – ignoring the constitution that apparently cannot be changed in regards to term limits.

K: Is it possible that the military acted correctly and that we’ve jumped to conclusions not warranted?

    average james Reply:

    Kregg,

    Legitimate questions bro.

These are the questions that need answering.

Why not wait until January when his term ends ?

Is the international community, specifically the OAS ok with this ? It doesn’t sound like it.

Some say that Obama(Bush43 as well) is in violation of the constitution, should the military remove him from office ?

    Kregg Reply:

James said: Some say that Obama(Bush43 as well) is in violation of the constitution, should the military remove him from office ?

K: Is that the prescribed authority in this country for removing a president? The point is that perhaps, just perhaps, the Honduran govt is doing exactly what they are supposed to be doing. Do we not trust them to follow their own laws? Please note that the US govt has frowned on what the Pres did in trying to change an unchangeable part of their constitution by ‘popular referendum’ WHICH IS NOT LEGAL…

    average james Reply:

    Good questions again Kregg.

It could all turn out to be perfectly legal.

    Or not.

    GuidoVanHorn Reply:

If through the legal means of the land the president is removed from office and he refuses to peacefully transistion power…I fully expect the military to forcefully remove him.

Democrats, Liberals, etc don’t want to talk about what is really important. The climbing jobless rate, the bailouts, rise in gas prices, the unions, North Korea, Iran, Honduras, their “faux” town hall on healthcare which btw 2 ABC reporters called Gibbs out on because never in the history of the white house has there been so little transparency( fixed questions, etc etc etc).

Maybe we’ll have another democrat BJ in the white house scenario. Now THAT’S what’s really important to conservatives!
