Mark Sanford’s Campaign Ad Promoting “Christian Values”
Oh, yeah…and it’s really important to tell the truth. Politico has this one from 2002, putting out the message that resulted in him becoming South Carolina’s governor (h/t RightWingWatch).

you forgot FDR, and Obama, which is amazing since he makes the list after a scant 5+ months in office.
Part of the blame is Sanford,s PR people and some of his key staffers as well.
I don,t care for his polices and the party he belongs to. Sanford can overcome this, but the man keeps sticking knives in hisown back.
Taking his family away for the weekend is the best actions this man has done. No more press conferences regarding this matter else need be.
If the man talk about his polices last week, the outcome would been alot better.
To me, the Christian Values movement is now akin to the religious perspective held by many of my Catholic peers… live it up during the week, confess, wash, and rinse your sins away on Sunday morning, and repeat.
I’m not impressed.
Any of you familiar with Kevin Phillips?
True,
He seems more like a Rock’n'roll celebrity than a governor. Any press is good press.
Does it seem that way to you ? Like he likes the attention ?
Clinton had the ability to go forward after his scandel by getting out of the quicksand while Sanford remains in his.

Wow. Thanks for the link. It’s inconceivable that you can do this in a democracy. In order for the system to work, casting ballots should be done in secret, but counting the ballots should be free and open to scrutiny.

Why does it always have to be a Rebulican or Democrat value. He cheated on his wife as many from both sides of the aisle. Its not a political thing.

He will cross the line this weekend.
He will be having a family vacation in Florida
over the holidays.

It’s political because Republicans are hypocrites who wrap themselves in “family values’ to get elected, even when they are corrupt to the core.
They also sell themselves as “fiscal conservatives”, and yet the worst deficits in history were created by Reagan and George W. Bush.

I think Republicans are missing a huge opportunity with this guy. Ronald Reagan was on his 2nd marriage when he became president.
This is a chance for Republicans to shun away from the conservative right influence and to embrace Sanford as a fiscal conservative. Basically, to say that, yes, we did try to moralize and it was over the board. But it’s time to get to the business of the country and away from the petty. By embracing Sanford and making a commitment to not air dirty laundry the Republicans can regain their voice at the serious discussion table.
As for Sanford himself, he is just being a straight shooter. He realized that he did something wrong and he keeps talking because the doesn’t want to create any room for a possibility that he lied. He already said that he told his wife about the affair 5 months ago. If she can forgive him, I think the media is gonna have to do the same.
There is 4 accusations that are being slinged at him:
1. He lied about the affair.
Clearly not true. He tells everything and tells it as soon as the question is asked.
2. He was away and not available to do state’s business.
This is clearly a stretch. He clearly broke down after realizing that as much as wanted to “save” the sate from the obligations attached to federal money, he wouldn’t be able to do it. He put up the fight to do what he saw as saving the state and he lost. The major business was over as far as he could see. So he broke down and left to take a proverbial breath of fresh air.
3. He was unfaithful to his wife and that indicates lack of character.
No, it indicates that human beings are complicated and that no one can help falling in love when it happens out of their control. Anyone who hasn’t experienced such an event has missed out. Anyone who has (fallen in love at an inconvenient time without being able to control it) knows that it is the best of times and the worst of times.
4. He is a hypocrite because he was damning Clinton for doing the same thing — cheating.
This is by far the strongest of all accusations. And I was tempted to believe it until I saw what Sanford actually said while damning Clinton. He said that lying was one of the most egregious things a president can do. He didn’t say “cheat on his wife” or “show lack of character” or any other code word for naughty behavior. He specifically said lying. And, as someone who voted for Clinton, I still have to agree. Lying to a grand jury was certainly a crime. And the only reason the question about sex was asked in a grand jury setting was that it was a sexual harassment trial. Asking about a history of marital infidelity is perfectly appropriate in a sexual harassment trial because marital fidelity can be used a defense.
So while he did lend his voice to a chorus that took advantage of the scandalous nature of Clinton’s crime, he never himself crossed the line of being scandalous. Demanding that a president not be allowed to lie to a grand jury does not rise to the same level as being too weak to resist falling in love.

This man will leave office within two weeks because those decent conservatives who supported him see a stark contradiction between who he claims to be and who he consistently is. This goes directly to his character, virtue, leadership, and credibility. Politicians may be forgiven a one-time infidelity (or maybe not)if the rest of their lives are straight, but Sanford had several infidelities, from what I understand. Conservatives don’t tolerate this, because again, it goes to character, virtue, leadership, and credibility.
But hey, the Gov. could redeem himself by committing perjury over the whole thing, like Clinton did, and then we’d call his whole failing “just having sex, none of our business.”

Ah, but those emails suggest anything but ‘just sex’, and leaving the country at taxpayer expense to’just have sex’ with her.
Perjury was a more serious issue, and any flack that Clinton recieved for it was warranted.

True, but Sanford,s PR,s and Sanford as well are not handling anything the right way.
1. I am trying to fall back in love
2. The other woman
3. Diverting this issue by allowing it to be news
4. Failure to attack democrats like the president
Sanford has allowed every1 to point out his lying, cheating and downfalls.
Reagan had a knack to stay on top and his dirt on the ground. Clinton diverted his failure by diving into work.
Public Relations or the head of public relations for any high profile person is extremly important. Sanford needs to stop the bleeding and the PR people need to help.
Reagan and Clinton if you like them or not PR people and staff where great by diverting scandls and going on the attack and addressing their work.
