Alaska Gov-To-Be Says Legal Bills Led To Resignation

July 5th, 2009, 10:06 PM EDT

Sean Parnell (r), Alaska’s Lt. Governor and soon-to-be chief, says it was the costs of legal investigations that prompted Sarah Palin to resign.

“I think what I heard from the governor,” Mr. Parnell said on “Fox News Sunday,” “really had to do with the weight on her, the concern she had for the cost of all the ethics investigations and the like — the way that that weighed on her with respect to her inability to just move forward Alaska’s agenda on behalf of Alaskans in the current context of the environment. So that’s what I saw.”

Mr. Parnell, who is scheduled to take over for Ms. Palin on July 26, said it was costing the State of Alaska about $2 million just to pay for the staff to deal with the records requests from the ethics complaints.

On Facebook, Palin said she has a “higher calling” to speak nationally about her values and that the Washington and media just don’t understand.

“How sad that Washington and the media will never understand; it’s about country,” the statement said. “And though it’s honorable for countless others to leave their positions for a higher calling and without finishing a term, of course we know by now, for some reason a different standard applies for the decisions I make.”

  1. So by this logic presented by Palin we can assume that all we do is file enough lawsuits against an elected representative and then they will leave office as a result.

Who cares what the voters in the state wants?

Someone is filing suit!?! Best reason ever to leave and just forget about that that stuff called ‘responsibility to the voters.’

  2. I”m sure the libs who continued to file pointless ethics complaints – none of which, apparently, have been substantiated – are feeling proud of themselves for driving a popular sitting governor from office. Palin stated that she and her husband have a $500,000 legal bill defending themselves from these warrantless accusations.

Shame on people who would do this. Unfortunately, some HAVE no shame – just politics – and no doubt we’ll hear cheering on this board for her departure from the same type as drove her from office. Disgusting…

I’m just glad she never got to the white house. You see all the flack President Obama is taking? How long would the former Gov. Palin have lasted?

    Kregg Reply:

Personally, I think she was unseasoned for the white house – but then so is BO.

Oh please, stop with the oh woe is Sarah financially garbage. In due time she will be a multi multi multi into infinity millionaire who will be just fine. Look for her in the future hosting her own show on Fox News not to mention 7 mil for her book.

    Boo-hoo$.

    GuidoVanHorn Reply:

even if you make a trillion dollars a year, it kind of sucks having to pay out money for no good reason…so even though I think it’s a lame excuse, I think she has a right to complain about legal fees accrued based on unfounded complaints.

K: Perhaps, but she owes the $500,000 now.

    A higher calling?

As I sit and read some of the comments here, I am recalling an old comment by Gov. Sarah Palin. It was made on the heel of Hillary’s tears during the campaign trail. It wasn’t very charitable or sympathetic. My original thought was and is, “Take care not to judge less you’d be on the receiving end of the same measure.” Yes, I am paraphrasing. I found Sarah’s comment after she emerged as McCain’s running mate.

Sure enough, Gov Palin got about the same load of garbage and then some that Hillary did. I, personaly felt that much of what Sarah Palin received was unwarranted and unjustified. Yet, it seems she faired alright.

As much as I liked the idea of a strong Christian woman becoming a US President, there is a real danger when it is person who is not ready. If not for Sen. John McCain, I definitely would not vote for her.

What is my sense of this “higher calling”? I am not sure of what it is. However, I don’t think it is running as a figurehead for the evangelical wing of the Republican Party. Would it have been better for Sarah to have finished her term in office? One would think so; however, Sarah, Todd and God are the better one to judge then us.

Oh Eric, do you think there may be more to the story then it appears? I think so.

Wow! I didn’t know the libs were that powerful!

  3. Well, obviously Pelosi can take it, but Palin can’t. Somebody better tough the girl up. Maybe give Nancy a call and ask for suggestions.

    Kregg Reply:

Nancy Pelosi can spend millions of her husband’s money defending herself – something she’s not needed to do. Sarah Palin is not rich and cannot pay the $500,000 in legal bills spent so far defending herself against false charges. Certainly even you can see its not a matter of ‘taking it’ or ‘toughing up’, Rock?

    Daddio Reply:

Of course Pelosi only sold what, 5-6 books.

Anyhow, there should be a law that makes those who bring false lawsuits against another person pay the legal bills of those they brought the false suit against.

That would stop all this nonsense with lawsuits that they know won’t win in court but will succeed in bankrupting another. That is imoral for one person to do to that to another.

    GuidoVanHorn Reply:

it’s not so much a law, but many times the loser does pay legal costs in frivolous lawsuits…not always, but judges can and do award court costs as part of judgements.

It happens a lot in divorce proceedings, the wage earner will pay the legal fees of the non-wage earner.

    Daddio Reply:

Agreed Guido, but when one person is attacked with one frivolous lawsuit after another and there is absolutely no basis for the lawsuits then the judge should start making the plaintiffs either pay for the legal bills of the defendant or throw the suit out before anyone racks up a huge legal cost.

    GuidoVanHorn Reply:

oh, I’m all for tort reform…our legal system is slow, redundant, archaic and obscenely expensive.

    Daddio Reply:

I never thought they should have let lawyers advertise on television either. They pollute the airwaves and promote frivolous lawsuits.

Limit or cap damage awards for all lawsuits, make it illegal for lawyers to advertise on tv, and do not allow class action suits.

I gotta go and make a phone call. Then get some shuteye. Have a good day.

  4. Um.. when has twittering become “News” …Todd doing things to salmon?

    blissfulconservative Reply:

Since when did bloggers become credible news sources?

    Kregg Reply:

Thats easy! When Sarah Palin was tapped as a VP candidate…

  5. when twittering reveals “news” the fact that she twitters is not all that newsworthy, the content of her tweets is the basis of news.

but I’m trying to figure out what is newsworthy about these tweets, other than they are going salmon fishing,

in related “news” my dad just came from an alaskan fishing trip and we had baked salmon and dill sauce on a bed of rice last night…delicious.

  6. I’m not an expect, but I really don’t think ethics charges are the same thing as law suits. For one thing, no one filing the charges would be awarded a settlement.

  7. I think the FBI might have said yesterday or today that the rumors she was being investigated by them were FALSE.

  8. Alan;
… still a yellow shirt journalist, I see.

  9. Helipilot, you are either ahead of the curve or behind it.
Alan is sticking with really meaningful coverage of Sarah (qualified) Palin’s move for the white house.
WHAT could be more mainstream media than that?

I am glued to my screen like I was for the stained blue dress and how many houses John McCain REALLY had….

    Remember:
“A good point guard, here’s what she does,” Palin said, “she drives through a full-court press protecting the ball, keeping her head up because she needs to keep her eye on the basket and she knows exactly when to pass the ball so that the team can win and that’s what I’m doing, keeping the eye on the ball. … I know when to pass the ball for victory.”
(And then walks off the court in the middle of a game).

  11. Uh oh, there’s another one:

“Wasilla resident Zane Henning will be filing an ethics complaint today (7/6) against soon-to-be-ex-governor Sarah Palin for continuing to collect per diem expenses from the State of Alaska while still living in, and commuting from her own home.”

    Daddio Reply:

The scum keeps coming to the top Lily. Speaking of another bringing yet another baseless ethics charge against Sarah. Their agenda is very clear. Defame and libel and destroy Sarah Palin through these baseless charges while trying to bring financial ruin to the Palin family.

    DISGUSTING WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!!!!
