Gun Toter At Obama Event Supports Hate Preacher

August 31st, 2009, 6:07 PM EDT

Chris Broughton, who brandished a gun at President Obama’s Tempe, Arizona event, is a follower of Pastor Steven L. Anderson, and “concurs” with Anderson’s prayer for Obama “to die and go to Hell.”  Broughton actually moved to Tempe in order to follow Anderson’s preachings.

In an interview with ABC 15 outside the storefront Faithful Word Baptist Church in Tempe, Broughton said of Anderson’s controversial August 16 “Why I Hate Barack Obama” sermon: “I concur, I think we’d be better off if God would send [Obama] where he’s going now instead of later. [Obama] is destroying our country.”

And when a reporter followed up with, “you’re not advocating violence against the president?” Broughton, who has previously said his weapons are for defense, says “I’m not going to answer that question directly.”

“I don’t care how God does it, I’m not going into further detail than that,” Broughton says. “It would be better now than later.”

  1. This is so damn sick! Send in the Secret Service to send this man straight to hell. I actually did not have a strong liking to Bush, but never wanted him dead. Impeached along with Cheney, but dead no… We are better than that. Some nitwit with no common sense… well you get the picture.

  2. Obviously Broughton is advocating for the assassination of President Obama. Obviously Anderson is hoping it happens. Obviously the entire radical rightwing of the republikkkan party is hoping and praying that someone somewhere has the balls to try it.

And obviously the extremist rightwingers playing their clown games on TV and radio are doing everything possible to lay the groundwork.

And they should all be damned.

RocKKKy, it’s people like you who want some idiot to try it so your wet dreams of an attempt on Obama’s life by “the whole conservative movement” will be supposedly fulfilled.

That’s a ridiculous reply. These hatemongering right-wingers are not some figment of Rocky’s imagination. The Secret Service says that threats against the President have gone up 400% since Obama was elected. There have been numerous instances of right-wingers holding signs calling for Obama’s death (even of his wife and daughters). There have been armed attacks by right-wingers against abortion providers, unitarian church members, police officers, and the Holocaust Museum.

The increasing incidents of violence and threats of violence by the radical Right are real and quantifiable.

    Absolutely Jasper,

Denial: the gop has developed into a radical extremist(terrorist, see Wally Herger) group.

Denial: their party shows no sign of internal leadership rather depends on talking points and direction from radio and tv personalities.

Denial: an ELECTION determined the direction of this country.

When the voice of reason is spoken from the right they get shouted down by the teabaggers, deathers, birthers, jesusers, aka lunatic fringe.

  3. And Willy couldn’t understand why people would be concerned about this violent seditious nut ‘exercising his second amendment rights’ by bringing a gun to an Obama event.

Do you get it now, Willy?

A person bringing a gun to any event, including an Obama event, does not automatically make him or her a “violent seditious nut.” That’s like saying that every government program equals socialism.

There’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed, and while I hate to cede any points to any of you anti-gun folks, this probably crosses that line.

The dude I was referring to was the one in this exchange:

And when a reporter followed up with, “you’re not advocating violence against the president?” Broughton, who has previously said his weapons are for defense, says “I’m not going to answer that question directly.”

People who can not directly answer whether they are advocating violence against the president shouldn’t be bringing guns to his events.

He is a violent seditious nut.

There’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed, and while I hate to cede any points to any of you anti-gun folks, this probably crosses that line.

Don’t know if you are referring to me as ‘anti-gun’ – but I’ve stated I don’t care if law abiding citizens have 1000+ fully automatic machine guns in their basements, if that’s what floats their boats.

I’m anti violent seditious nut, not anti-gun.

Flap – “There’s a line that shouldn’t be crossed, and while I hate to cede any points to any of you anti-gun folks, this probably crosses that line.”

We agree on something. Good news.

And here’s one to part it all in better perspective:

We are anti-violence, not anti-gun. Maybe not all of us but that’s where the right wing fails to understand what exactly they are hearing.

We are a Second Amendment and I have not heard any serious reasoning to repeal that Amendment. What I do hear, and say myself, are facts about gun ownership in the household and facts about human nature regarding violence.

These protestors bringing guns to rallies is a piece of evidence for me what is really going on in this country. If a bunch of armed black militants like The Black Panthers had showed up at a Bush or a McCain rally it would be front page for weeks and nobody in America would stand behind their reckless decision to bring weapons to a political event. But in this situation we have a certain segment of the media praising these people and excusing their actions while these same people would denounce the same actions from another group.

  4. This guy would benefit from some of those Dick Cheney “Assertive Interrogation Techniques” ASAP. There’s a dangerous atmosphere being cultivated. The right wing needs to be very very cautious about associating with would be lone gunmen in the book repository repeats.

But i would love to see Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, and Savage prosecuted.

  5. “I don’t care how God does it, I’m not going into further detail than that,” Broughton says. “It would be better now than later.”

Agree or disagree with a President, you can NOT say this stuff and be allowed to go where the President goes.

    EricG Reply:

Not without the Secret Service breathing down your neck anyway…

  6. Bringing a gun to any Presidential event is totally inappropriate no matter what the reason. This is not included in any reasonable interpretation of Constitutional rights.
I believe citizens have the right to peacefully gather without the threat of some nut case dropping in to intimidate either the speaker or the attendees!
I hope the Secret Service will watch these people night & day!

I am sure they do Jasperjava. They had the resources to watch all the hateful left-wing extremists during the Bush administration.

Lefties, on the whole, believe in non-violence. Most are not that keen on guns, either. I don’t think Dubya was under any serious threat of assassination by a Birkenstock-wearing, patchouli-scented, latte-sipping peacenik hippie.

    Stunning retort as usual Daddido.
No evidence to qualify how yout portrayal of “hateful left wing extremists” is accurate. No evidence to qualify the comparison between the above unqualified group to the group of right wing extremists, clearly identified, and qualified above.
Ohh, Acorn is a left wing Extremist organization(making threats of violence), Liberaland is a left wing extremist organization(making threats of violence)…etc etc…right?

I like that picture, and agree with your risk assessment. However,I believe the risk assessment is accurate, more because the (very powerful) state had already turned rogue, and less because of the presumptive peacefulness of “left-wingers”.

  7. Anyone identify this man who carried a weapon as a black man? Imagine, a black man carring a weapon to an Obama event. Just saying.

Why do you want to turn this into an issue about race, Willy?

I saw several news clip of this violent seditious nut, none of them hid the fact that he was black.

    Daddio Reply:

I don’t Cara. I saw the fact that he was black for the first time on Fox News. Never was that fact mentioned on MSNBC, or any other news source I watched. I think they were trying to hide that fact. That’s all.

    Um Cara Reply:

Or maybe they agreed with you and me that this wasn’t an issue about race?

    Daddio Reply:

The point is that they showed the others who carried as white men. Why them and not this one?

Is it because they, the media, want to inject race, because Obama is black?

Well, like I said – I saw it on multiple news sources where they showed video of this violent seditious nut, it was fairly clear that he was a black man.

    Nobody was hiding anything.

    Daddio Reply:

That man was not a “violent seditious nut” Cara. Where in the world did you hear that? If he was then he would have been arrested and jailed on the spot. Just because he carried a weapon doesn’t make him a “violent seditious nut”.

Neither was the West Virginia couple who were ARRESTED simply for wearing anti Bush shirts.

Yep, it is a flavor explosion, to be sure. Very different from the other Scotch you have been drinking, but once you do get used to the taste – you will find it very enjoyable.

Imagine indeed. A black man carrying a gun into an Obama rally is one thing to imagine. But imagine instead that black men brought their big, bad guns into a Republican rally with all the GOP heads all gathered there.

Do you really think the FOX News people would sit around and claim to be ‘buddies’ with the protestors in that case?

    I don’t.

I think the tolerance for political dissent with armed forces involved goes away from conservatives as we talk about threatening a white candidate / representative with a gun of their own party. I think if Obama was a Republican and this happened the right wing would call these people terrorists.

Which to me, is exactly what they are. With our country’s history of presidential assassinations and assassination attempts anyone who brings ANY gun to a political rally is standing tall for terrorism and not for democracy.
