Who Says There’s No Racism Among Obama Opponents?

  1. I don’t know. Did someone say there was no racism among opponents of Obama? I am not a racist (especially since I am of mixed heritage) but I bet there probably are racists that are opponents of Obama. And I bet there are racists that support and probably voted for Obama. If you believe what former President Carter said, that “an overwhelming majority of (US citizens) are racists”–didn’t an overwhelming majority of US citizens vote for President Obama? Maybe they, or someone else is just confused.

    EricG Reply:

    You just misquoted Carter.

“I think an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man, that he’s African-American,”

“I live in the South, and I’ve seen the South come a long way, and I’ve seen the rest of the country that shares the South’s attitude toward minority groups at that time, particularly African-Americans.”

Maybe I shouldn’t have quoted him. Even though what I put in quotation marks means the same thing as what he said. I should have said Carter ‘essentially’ said that “an overwhelming portion of” American people —they are the animous ones—are racist–they are the ones that recognize that he is a black man.

Thank you for correcting me. But I think it doesn’t change what Carter meant, or said, or what I meant, or said.

    Thanks though.

    jasperjava Reply:

    I still think you’re misunderstanding Carter’s point.

an overwhelming portion of the intensely demonstrated animosity toward President Barack Obama is based on the fact that he is a black man

He’s saying that an overwhelming portion of the most extreme, most heated oppposition to Obama is rooted in racism.

He’s saying that if Obama was white, there wouldn’t be such an unhinged intensity in the attacks against him.

I’m not sure that’s true: Clinton was white, and the Right lost its collective mind during his presidency, too. But there may be even more intensity (fueled by irrational fears, ignorance and hatred) this time around.

“and the Right lost its collective mind during his presidency, too. But there may be even more intensity (fueled by irrational fears, ignorance and hatred) this time around.”

Racism is bi-partisan. You can be assured liberals are participating in the “collective mind”. While they may not be the majority in the streets demonstrating you CAN be assured there are an equal number of liberals and conservatives sitting at home spouting ignorance and hatred.

  2. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone say that there is no racism amongst Obama supporters…only that they are a lot fewer then there were against Martin Luther King.

    jasperjava Reply:

I agree with that, Guido. Thankfully, society has progressed to a significant degree since the 50’s and 60’s.

  3. Are some people EVER going to stop thinking they’re being so witty & clever associating people of African descent with fried chicken and watermelon?

  4. Sean Hannity asked the same question today, almost!
He asked his guest, Leo, if he can name those who are racists(at fox news/tv & radio).

    pierre Reply:

Leo could not come up with the words :
    You, sean

Nanatehay has a post very similar to this.

I think my point about an unwillingness to confront this as the primary driving force of any popularity of the racism that is present is enforced by the just outright rejection of viewing any of these images / actions as racist by conservatives.

Sonia Sotomayor was a racist at the drop of a hat but when it comes to their own kind, they fall silent.

    libpatriot Reply:

EricG, some disturbing images in that link, for sure.

  6. Those shacks on Carters peanut farm look alot like slave quarters. Maybe he should look in the mirror.

    jasperjava Reply:

Maybe you should remove your Klansman hood and look in the mirror yourself.

  7. “Who Said There’s No Racism Among Obama Opponents”

I don’t know. Who said that? Of course there is some racism. There will always be those who are racist.

I wonder how many blacks who opposed George W. Bush did so in the name of racism.

    Southern Girl Lib Reply:

    Zero.

    jasperjava Reply:

I agree, SGL. Blacks overwhelmingly supported Bill Clinton, for example, and never had a problem due to his race. Their opposition to Dubya was on policy. His domestic policies took a large toll on the Black community – poorer environmental standards, labor standards, tax fairness, etc.

When Kanye West (the jackass) said that “George B*sh doesn’t care about black people” during Katrina, he was wrong. B*sh appointed the first two African-American Secretaries of State, after all. He just doesn’t care about POOR people, whether black or white.

    Daddio Reply:

Uh-hmmm, Yeah, I see. Ok. If you say so Southern Girl. Riiiiigght.

  8. The real issue here is not racism although race is part of the motive. Any time you mix blind patriotism with fear and religion it is a dangerous mix. Pre-WW II Many nations became more nationalistic based on fear and insecurities what went a long with that is a true limited view of what is a “Russian.” “German” ETC By definition minorities Jews were excluded.

Many in America today are not out and out racists but look at Obama and see Black skin Muslim father funny name lived in Africa for a period, very liberal all this adds up to “Not American to me.” The birther movement, statements like “I want my country back” guns at rallies all manifests this mind set. If it was purely racist it would not scare me so much. The fact it is justified by nationalism and a monolithic view of America mixed with fear lies and ignorance scares me to no end. Would Colin Powell be treated as badly no because he does not fit all of these criteria.

When Clinton President many despised him but different type of intensity. Could you imagine Guns at rallies? Hitler signs?

How would Senator Wilson have been treated in the South if he disrespected Clinton one of there own like he did Obama? Would he get support he is getting now? The answer is obvious.

This is more about Red White and blue then Black and White. Sadly to many patriotism has become a religion when mixed with fear defintions become clearer and scapegoats are needed.

I wish the right could see the danger but they are to blinded by worshipping nation.

As a Christian I am embarrassed by how many so called evangelicals have become zealots for a nation something Christ did not advocate.

    Thank You

    Nation worship.

    Good call Greed.

Excellent post, GreedIsDead. Small correction though: Obama never lived in Africa. You must have been thinking Indonesia.

I would also dispute “very liberal”. I would call Obama a moderate centrist.

  9. Many on the right tie the Bible to a political party which limits the values they say they want to up hold.

ISA Chapter 40-”All nations before him are nothing.”

Faith and nationalism have become one for many a truly scary combination. Many religious Zealots wanted to make Jesus king and use Jesus for there political agenda -he refused-so should we.

You are nailing it today brother.

In fact Christ admonished people to pay their taxes and abide by the law of the land at a time when Israel was occupied by Rome, subserviant to the Roman authority.

    blissfulconservative Reply:

He also ordered Pharoah to let his people go.

Do you really think that Old testament law still applies ?
    Shall we stone adulterers ?
    or rebellious teenagers ?

Shal we require woman who are menstruating to stay outside of the camp for ten days ?
Shall we sacrifice unblemished animals ?

    New Testament Bliss.

    jasperjava Reply:

Typical conservative, likes to spout the Bible without understanding a word of it. It was MOSES who demanded emancipation for the Hebrew slaves, not Jesus.

Are you from Oklahoma? 75% of kids over there can’t name the first President of the United States.

Imagine that: not knowing that Jesus was the first President. Unreal.

    average james Reply:

Shall we act as they did in Old Testament times and kill all the inhabitants of Iraq, who we invaded ?

Shall we cut off all the heads of those who disagree with the rulers like Jehu ?

  10. In NYC the Queens Library internet connection blocks the link as if it is porn. So I dropped it in Google images and found obamarofl may mean Rolling on the Floor Laughing. Also got to the great Americans at stormfront.org and community2.myfoxhouston.com. The thumbnail from Fox houston has a bucket of KFC with Obama but the link didn’t work.

  11. In the old book kings were held accountable because it was theocracy many scriptures warned kings but the right wing. Christians in America treat us like we are living under that same code blind elitism toward country will do that it puts true message of Christ to shame

  12. What bugs me the most is when you read the Bible no extreme capitalism or nationalism and many scriptures about giving healing clothing feeding poor. But do Christians try to influence government on these values naaa
