Gitmo Not Likely To Close By January

The White House now says that the Guantanamo prison is unlikely to close by January as promised.
They cited legal complications for the delay, but said they were still optimistic about shutting the detention facility for terrorism suspects soon.
The announcement represents a blow to the president, who signed an executive order and set the deadline with great fanfare during his first week in office.
Republicans will likely use this as a club to beat up on the president, even though they never favored closing Gitmo in the first place.…

Laffy has a good catch at The Political Carnival, via the New York Post: Khadafy’s interpreter quit in the middle of his UN speech.
After struggling to turn Khadafy’s insane ramblings at the UN into English for 75 minutes, the Libyan dictator’s personal interpreter got lost in translation.
“I just can’t take it any more,” Khadafy’s interpreter shouted into the live microphone – in Arabic.
At that point, the U.N.’s Arabic section chief, Rasha Ajalyaqeen, took over and translated the final 20 minutes of the speech.
“His interpreter just collapsed – this is the first time …

Karoli at Momocrats calls out Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona for saying that he doesn’t want any maternity care in his insurance policy. Senator Debbie Stabenow of Michigan calls him out, too. Apparently, it doesn’t occur to Kyl that men are related to women who occasionally give birth.
KYL: I don’t need maternity care, and so requiring that to be in my insurance policy is something that I don’t need and will make the policy more expensive.
STABENOW: If I could just interject once with my colleague — I think your mom probably did. (LAUGHTER)
KYL…

An Afghan immigrant was planning to use hydrogen peroxide bombs on September 11 to coincide with the anniversary of the attacks in 2001. US prosecutor Tim Neff told a federal judge that Najibullah Zazi “was in the throes of making a bomb and attempting to perfect his formulation.”
Zazi has publicly denied being a terrorist since he was arrested on Saturday and charged with lying to FBI agents during three days of voluntary interviews. That count was considered a holding charge pending Thursday’s indictment.
The U.S. indictment says Zazi received explosives training from al-Qaida and bought large quantities …

Cameron says young people go to college believing in God and exit with their beliefs “stripped and shredded.” He’s got his own way of commemorating the 150th anniversary of the publication of Origin of Species.
He and other creationists have created thousands of editions of Charles Darwin’s landmark work explaining evolutionary theory, with a 50-page introduction that picks apart aspects of Darwin’s work and try to link it to everything from Nazi eugenics to the scientist’s alleged “disdain for women.”
Invoking Godwin’s Law, Cameron says that Darwin’s theories are Hitlerian.
“You can see where [Hitler] …

Nancy Pelosi was mocked by conservatives for expressing concern that today’s political climate could lead to violence. But five former officers with the CIA, FBI and Secret Service say they agree with her.
And this week, the FBI said that it is investigating whether anti-government sentiment played a role in the death of a U.S. Census worker who was found hanged from a tree in rural Kentucky, because the body had the word “fed” scrawled on the chest — though authorities say there are too many unanswered questions at this point to rule the case a homicide or a …

Is he the male Michele Bachmann?
That is, this is one of the goals they have to go to is same-sex marriage because it has to plow through marriage in order to get to their goal. They want public affirmation. They want access to public funds and resources. Eventually all those resources will be pooled because that’s the direction we’re going. And not only is it a radical social idea, it is a purely socialist concept in the final analysis.
As Jed Lewison points out, if you think gay marriage is socialist because that would mean …

Former Bush speechwriter Matt Latimer, making the rounds with a new book (he’s on my radio show tonight), reveals that even awarding the Medal of Freedom became politicized. J. K. Rowling was denied the honor because White House officials believed her work “encouraged witchcraft.” When Ted Kennedy’s name came up as a possibility, speechwriter Marc Thiessen put the kabosh on it because Kennedy “was a liberal.”…
