Cokie Roberts on Roman Polanski: “Take Him Out And Shoot Him”
On ABC’s “This Week.”
“Roman Polanski is a criminal,” Roberts said on ABC’s “This Week.” “He raped and drugged and raped and sodomized a child. And then was a fugitive from justice. As far as I’m concerned, just take him out and shoot him.”
And yet, the victim herself wants the case dismissed.

It’s a strange case.
Number one, why is Polanski being arrested SO many years after the fact? 30+ years. If he was going to be arrested, do it sooner. Plus the fact that the victim wants the case dismissed. That doesn’t mean the case should be dismissed, but I think it should have some bearing, especially considering it’s been so long AND it might affect the poor woman to dredge it all up again.
Number two, according to the victim’s deposition, she had already had sexual intercourse twice (with multiple partners?) before this crime occurred. Very strange…not sure what to think of it.
Number three, Polanski is scummy and Cokie Roberts is entirely correct to have such a visceral response. Disgusting, if you read the deposition by the victim.
So I’m kind of hedging here…but I won’t shed too many tears if Polanski is locked up.

why arrest him after this many years and the fact the victim wants the case dismissed? Well, in criminal court, the state, not the victim, prosecutes the indicted individual. I can see why she wants it dismissed, Polanski paid her money in a civil law settlement, so to her seeing him go to jail well maybe not quite as just as getting paid. Polanski has been a fugitive at large after he pleaded guilty to the charges, so it’s funny a conservative like you isn’t for upholding the rule of law.

He wasn’t arrested sooner because he kept his feet in countries that don’t have extradition treaties with the US. Switzerland does.
There is reason to believe the victim’s mother often pimped her out to various people so she could move up the social circle. Regardless, what Polanski did was illegal and if he didn’t want to face the music he shouldn’t have been caught. He commited a crime and was found guilty, its irrelevant if the victim has had an 11th hour conversion for a crime with no statute of limitations. Selectively enforcing the law is the sort of thing that makes people scream about the proper role of the courts. If courts enforce the laws, then there is no problem. Whether if its small time hoods, white collar criminals, or aberrant celebrities. All are supposed to be equal in the sight of justice.
And the most important point made so far has been if this was Father Polanski, Catholic Priest, it wouldn’t matter if the victim forgave him and he had done it seventy years ago. The same people saying this is an overreaction would be calling for his head. Maybe some of Polanski’s detractors would be taking a different point of view in that scenario, and they’d be just as wrong as the naysayers now.

I think almost exactly the opposite.
If he did what he is accused of, it is a heinous crime and he if this was Father Polanski, Catholic Priest, should be tried, and sentenced no matter what the victim thinks.
Where I disagree is, if this was Father Polanski, aCatholic Priest, he would have been moved to another parish, maybe pay out a settlement, the public would be told the problem was “taken care of”, nothing to see here and the church would continue to get faith based money, and tax exempt status.

Huh?
The point is that we think the left would be reacting different if instead of being a famous shmamous direc’tor, Mr. Polanski were a Republican politician. I picked Alaska because so many people hate Republican politicians out of Alaska.

And it would have been just as wrong if the church covered up for it. And as I recall many on the hollywood left have pursued the accused priests and have even made independent documentaries highlighting the prominence of these scandals. Thats commendable behavior because it is standing up for the rights of children. Thats why this bifurcation of selective outrage is frustrating, because many of these people can see the problem for what it is until its one of their own. Just as a lot of the GOP cover up for some of their own scum and engage in the “but they did so much good for the people” they often dismiss from their opponents. There is no redeeming quality in the eyes of the law, if someone cured cancer and was on the verge of another breakthrough and then went on to commit first degree murder with malice aforethought, they should go to prison just as much as any high school drop out who shot someone while knocking over a liquor store.
Its this idea that certain people are above the law that has led to such a corrupt government and the failure of democracy to weed out deceitful and counterproductive pols abusing their position of leadership.

one important fact: Polanski pled guilty to the crime he was charged with. Don’t forget he is already guilty therefore up until his arrest last week, he was a fugitive-at-large.

Important fact: Polanski pled guilty to the charges, thereby he has been a fugitive-at-large these last 30 odd years.

I’ve already said that If he did what he is accused of, it is a heinous crime and he ****if this was Father Polanski, Catholic Priest****,should be tried, and sentenced no matter what the victim thinks.
Although my mistake was that I copied and pasted another poster’s, ‘if this was Father Polanski, Catholic Priest’..and stuck it in the wrong place.
I know very few people who think he’s OK.
But again I see no difference between that and the church scandal,, OR,
Republican director of the “Young Republican Federation” Nicholas Elizondo molested his 6-year old daughter and was sentenced to six years in prison.
Republican aide Alan David Berlin was arrested on charges that he wanted to engage in sex acts with a 15-year-old boy while dressed in a panda costume.
Republican activist and former presidential campaign chairman Jeffery Claude Bartleson was arrested on charges of sexually molesting a 5-year old boy.
Republican activist and former chairman of the Christian County Republicans Royce Fessenden pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree child molestation and one count of second-degree statutory sodomy.
Republican parole board officer and former legislator George C. Ortloff pleaded guilty to attempting to lure 11- and 12-year-old girls to have sex with him.
Republican legislator Scott Muschany was charged with molesting a 14-year old girl.
Republican chief of staff Eric Feltner pleaded guilty to showing pornography to a 13-year old girl.
Republican presidential campaign official Matthew Joseph Elliot was convicted of sexual exploitation of a child.
Republican prosecutor John David Roy Atchison was arrested for soliciting sex from a 5-year old girl, then killed himself three weeks later. At the time of his arrest, Atchison was an “assistant U.S. attorney” appointed by President Bush’s attorney general.
Republican city councilman Joseph Monteleone Jr. was found guilty of fondling underage girls.
Republican advertising consultant Carey Lee Cramer was sentenced to six years in prison for molesting two 8-year old girls, one of whom appeared in an anti-Gore television commercial.
Republican congressional aide Jeffrey Nielsen was arrested for having sex with a 14-year old boy.
Republican County Commissioner Patrick Lee McGuire surrendered to police after allegedly molesting girls between the ages of 8 and 13.
Republican prosecutor Larry Corrigan was arrested for soliciting sex from 13-year old girls.
Do we need to

I don’t see your point by listing all these animals and I mean animals..but to list just republcans is pointless because I’m sure you could find just as many animals on the other side of the fence. This piece of trash was found guilty and ran and now the hollywood fringe is petitioning to be released instead of hooking up the car battery or spending quality time making friends in the prison shower. Making this political is reaching even on this blog.

Yeah, just take him out and shoot him. Torture him first. And maybe we should nuke Switzerland if they don’t send the guy back fast enough. Maybe we should nuke France for not extraditing people to the US. And let’s nuke the UN too, because, duuuuhhhhh, we need a reason?
Dear Cokie: Very smart commentary. Very very smart.
October 5th, 2009 at 5:27 pm
Cokie, I appreciate the emotion/sentiment of saying “shoot ‘em”….but kind of late for that.
What I wonder is how many others did Polanski do the same way? I doubt this was a one-time occurrence. Guess we’ll never know.

“And yet, the victim herself wants the case dismissed.”
Yet, it is not the girl’s law that he broke it is society’s law. It is society that Polanski owes his debt not the girl. And, Alan, I dare you to read the girl’s Grand Jury Testimony and not think that Roman deserves everything he has coming.

Well, since grand jury testimony is usually secret I’d have to wonder where this “Grand Jury Testimony” came from.

She impressed me so much that I went and joined Alan’s Liberaland just to comment on Cokie’s comment! I couldn’t have said it better. Thank you Cokie!
I don’t care that the victim herself wants this case dismissed. This poor little girl had to survive, so she put that nightmare behind her. What else was she going to do? You have to go on in life, you have to grow, you can’t just lay there in pain for thirty some odd years and wait for justice to be served. She’s a grown woman now and she’s already testified. They are violating her again if they have her name on some petition somewhere as one of the supporters of this guy to be released. Seems to me that’s what they’re using her for now.
