Al Sharpton Seeks To Prevent Limbaugh From Buying NFL Team; Some Players Won’t Play

October 12th, 2009, 10:54 AM EDT

Al Sharpton has fired off a letter to NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell asking him to reject the effort by Rush Limbaugh to buy the St. Louis Rams.

In the letter, Sharpton tells Goodell, “Rush Limbaugh has been divisive and anti-NFL on several occasions with comments about NFL Players including Michael Vick and Donovan McNabb.”

In 2003, Limbaugh famously argued that Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb was getting special treatment in the press because the media wanted to see a black quarterback succeed.

But in his letter, Sharpton brought up another Rush-centric controversy, adding that Rush’s “recent statement that the NFL was beginning to look like a fight between the Crips and the Bloods without the weapons, was disturbing.”

And some black players are saying that they won’t play for a team headed by Limbaugh.

[New York Jets linebacker Bart] Scott says players remember what Limbaugh said [about Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donavan McNabb], and adds that the NFL would be wise not to allow the nationally syndicated host into the league.

“It’s an oxymoron that he criticized Donovan McNabb,” Scott said. “A lot of us took it as more of a racial-type thing. I can only imagine how his players would feel. I know I wouldn’t want to play for him. He’s a jerk. He’s an —. What he said (about McNabb) was inappropriate and insensitive, totally off-base. He could offer me whatever he wanted, I wouldn’t play for him. … I wouldn’t play for Rush Limbaugh. My principles are greater and I can’t be bought.”

  1. An object lesson in values from some black guys to an old white p***k.

  2. A politician wants to prevent a private citizen from buying into a franchise? He wants to prevent someone with money from using his money to HELP the economy?

I think Sharpton should stay out of it too, but he has as much right to throw in his 2 cents as anybody.

There are many less incendiary people who have not insulted half of the players who would also like to buy the franchise.

What goes around comes around, and Limbowel is probably one of the most hated people on earth.

I’m no fan of Sharpton, but surely he has a 1st Amendment right to write a letter to the NFL commissioner if he wants to. Likewise, I guess Limbaugh can try to buy the Rams. And black players who don’t want to be on his team (and I don’t blame them for feeling that way), should he get the Rams, don’t have to play for him, contract issues permitting, of course.

  3. Frankly, I can’t stand Sharpton or Limpballs.

I agree on both counts; well said.

Well, SOME bipartisan agreement is still possible in this country after all, lol.

  4. Al Sharpton is an idiot…and Bart Scott is most likely a Liar…if no one else was willing to sign him he would go to St. Louis happy as a clam.

Yes!!! a pro athlete with a conscience? lol

Rush can have any percent of the team his money can buy, without question.

Will I buy a ticket? Nope. aint putting my money in his pocket.. but hey I havnt bought a ticket since the cardinals were here.

If an athlete can kill dogs(btw quite grotesquely) and find work or any number of incidents that occurred in the areana of sports no one should raise a brow at Rush. just my 2 cents in cape garage door.

Guido is right. This is no business of any politician. Rush is a private citizen exercising his right as a private citizen. If he wants in on the deal to buy the Rams then he has that right. If the Rams like the deal put together by the group that Rush is part of then they will sell. Simple business deal. Well maybe not simple, but a business deal.

While I agree that Sharpton has no business in this, the league also has every right to decide that Limbaugh does not reflect the values held by the NFL.

Also, not in their interest if the players won’t play for him.

  5. Tell Sharpton to get lost. This is America and Rush has every right to buy into the Rams club. Go Rush!
