Balloon Family’s Story Didn’t Fly

October 18th, 2009, 9:12 AM EDT

Larimer County Sheriff Jim Alderden says criminal charges will be filed in the case of Balloon Dad. At the very least, the suggestion is that a false police report was filed. Dig the flag shirt on the sheriff.

  1. Glad to hear it.

these people shouldn’t be allowed to make a spectacle of their son’s life and claim he is in danger when he clearly wasn’t and I believe they knew that from the very beginning.

I think they may have been looking for their 15 min. of fame. Looks like they got that, plus a date with a judge…

don’t get too excited, false report is class-3 misdemeanor so the most he’ll get is a fine if no further charges are pressed. He deserves to pay a fine after wasting resources for two hours that could’ve been put to better use.

YESS!! The sheriff’s office is pursuing felony charges:
    (From AP)
“The parents weren’t under arrest, the sheriff said. He said he expected to recommend charges of conspiracy, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, making a false report to authorities and attempting to influence a public servant. Federal charges were also possible.”

“The most serious charges are felonies and carry a maximum sentence of six years in prison and a $500,000 fine. Alderden said they would be seeking restitution for the costs, though he didn’t have an estimate.”

“The cost for just the two military helicopters was about $14,500.”
-add the fact that Denver International Airport was shut down for two hours and IMO this guy deserves what he gets.

Oh and the sheriff is now confirming the whole thing was a hoax (did any of us doubt it?)

  2. The balloon dad is only trying to make an honest living in our Ayn Randish/free market economy. As a free American, he’s only looking out for himself and trying to get ahead.

An honest living? That not quite my definition of honest, but whatever!?

John Galt: “an honest living is a me first living”.

The real issue isn’t the supposed dishonesty of the balloon dad, but the foolish gullibility of the rescue people. Why must the balloon dad pay a heavy price for the mistakes of the public safety “professionals”?

I don’t think the rescue people were being fooled, they have a job to do and that’s it… the media, yes! Agreed? somewhat? The man was playing a foolish game. Unfortunately, I got moderated on a good link. Lets say he was in the mid-west with no major airports around, maybe then, he may of been less scrutinized…but to have your kid in there or maybe not and then to play a media game is somewhat redundant, don’t you think?

When one plays dishonest havoc on our social services…yes, they should pay for it. I have first hand knowledge on this. Not stuff that is trite, but more serious, in nature.

It might of been the wine…oooops:)

I’ve been singing this crazy song all day! Up, up and away, in my beautiful balloon…see if this gets moderated….jeez and jezebellle.
