On Monday’s Radio Show…
• Christopher Hitchens and Pastor Douglas Wilson, who are featured in the new documentary Collision, sit down with Alan to debate the value of religion.
• Alan asks New Mexico hotel owner Larry Whitten how he can justify ordering Hispanic employees to Anglicize their names.
• Has the public option – which was once thought to be nearly dead – been successfully revived? Alan weighs in on today’s developments.

Joel: “Has the public option – which was once thought to be nearly dead – been successfully revived? Alan weighs in on today’s developments.”
Well, personally, it’s hard to trust to optimism that may be premature, but this COULD be the start of something good…

I disagree with him on matters of faith and God, but Christopher Hitchens is a brilliant, fascinating person. I am looking forward to hearing Hitchens and Pastor Wilson talk.
The “Collision” documentary looks interesting, too, especially from the Amazon preview video.
“Anglicize their names”
See, it would probably be easier if the dude would request that the individuals with really long, difficult-to-pronounce names use a nickname or something. He creates a political firestorm by ordering JUST Hispanics…makes him look like he’s a meanie.

Maybe the Dems are finally realizing that without the inclusion of the public option in healthcare reform…there is slim to no chance of their being re-elected?
Or maybe 61% (probably higher than that) of the American people do matter? Hoping so!
With the jobless rates soaring (and probably much higher than reported) how can we restore this economy with health (& other) insurance rates skyrocketing?
When/if unemployment/underemployment rates reach 20%..even the recession-proof healthcare industry will deteriorate…do we wait until hospitals start closing their doors to fix this?
I say & you can quote me, “GIVE ‘EM HELL HARRY!”

While the public option is part of the way forward and will be a great victory if it gets implemented, it has largely drowned out ideas/debate on reducing costs elsewhere in the system.
Make no mistake, I have little but contempt for Medical Insurance companies and the benefit (or lack thereof) they provide to the consumers versus a public model. However:
1) Where is the debate on preventing disease/ill-health in the first place?
2) Where are the incentives to make healthcare providers avoid frivolous (and expensive) scans etc that drive up their profit at the expense of our premiums?
3) Why aren’t we talking about loosening the regulation on PA’s, NP’s and RN’s to be allowed to perform more tasks which they have been trained to do, without having to give a cut to the on-staff MD.
etc, etc
If we can get the payment/oversight (not to mention accessability) fixed by passing a public option then great, but it’s not going to be a final solution to solving the cost issue. Until we also tackle the healthcare providers, it will be like scraping some frosting off the top off a cake and believing it’s now much healthier.

I agree, Mary.
It took long enough but they finally see that rejecting a public option is the same as rejecting any sound reform of the system.

Worth reading regarding the deficit …
http://www.ritholtz.com/blog/2009/10/what-caused-the-1-2-trillion-deficit/
The deficit was already “baked in” when Obama was sworn in and it’s built on shrinking revenues, not increased spending. It turns out, people stop paying their taxes when they lose their jobs. LOL.

You’ll find Kansas is not totally “flat”. The state doesn’t get flat until you get west of Wichita.
The Flint Hills (running from Manhattan down into Oklahoma) are as pretty country as you’ll find anywhere, and sparsely populated. Cattle country.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flint_hills
You see some of the Flint Hills driving from Emporia toward Wichita with a detour to Strong City for a better look.
Western Kansas is worse than “flat”. They have flies the size of small birds out there and everyone goes somewhere else (Denver or Wichita) for the winter.

Florida is Flat. Highest elevation somewhere around 350 ft. I hope that chunk of real estate doesn’t disappear through global warming. Ya think?

I think the main question is which happens first: Florida drowns, or Nevada runs out of water.

GREAT interview last night, Alan.

Good show Alan.. Your real strength is that you don’t screen your callers and just talk to the ones that agree with you. Dissent is actually what built our country. But darnit there is a part of me that so enjoys listening to you wade through Darwins waiting room when they run out of beer and call you

Very interesting topic. One not discussed with objectivity in anything I hear.
I am highly interested in this documentary.
Or this guy could save us all the trouble and just declare himself a racist.
Look at his name even: Whitten. As to “whitten” up America.

The public option is not dead thanks to Pelosi and other Democrats who understand that half measures avail us for nothing.

Article One. Section Two. of U.S. Constitution
“Right wingers are stupid.”
Oops!
I meant to say that the original language of the document is:
“To protect the general welfare of the United States.”
And The Supreme Court definition that appears within in most textbooks is:
“To protect the general welfare of the people of the United States.”
They obviously meant “the people” and not “the state” or “the states” themselves.
I have said many times that if we had a better education system we would not see as much as this “Tenther” and other conservative-nonsense catching on with some.
I could pull out my U.S. Constitutional Law textbook that is biggest book you ever saw …

Very interesting discussion in regards to the absense or existence of God.
I would point out that an Evangelical against an agnostic (”Non-Theist”) is such an extreme divide thate is less to learn. Fundamentalist religious views involve rejecting common sense along with all proven science. It’s just off the charts, while agnostic / atheist / Non-Theist (Oh wahtever! The “No God Group”!) is just a process of critical thinking.
I have no desire to pass judgment, but I always have felt relying on a great deal of quotes is not a very good stance. I enjoy reading some of those quotes myself, but I don’t agree with all of them completely.
There are many “angles” on God, is the point.
I am not saying Evangelicals should be shunned from debate, but I think a Fundamentalist Muslim would be the best debate partner.
In my view.

Nobody is saying we came from monkeys.
People are saying we are 94.6% genetically similar to monkeys, because we are.
We most likely evolved from apes. The science is trickling out, but it’s a safe assumption.
But, some people sling poo over the radio and television at The President everyday.
Maybe those people evolved from monkeys, just those people over there doing that…

Colmes -
“There is a theory that the Earth is round.”
No. That became a fact when we attained geosynchronis orbit.
“Theory” is that which cannot be empirically proven.
…
I heard a theory that people evolved from mushrooms.

Let’s talk about Cosmic Mechcanics … why not?
First there was nothing, as in no-thing. But perhaps there was a very small thing, randomness. Then “boom goes the universe”.
Or perhaps God always existed in Void (no form) and decided to make The Universe out of boredom or perhaps true ultimate purpose.
Or perhaps human beings create gods and / or God because they are afraid of dying or being alone.
Hm …
