  1. From the “promoted clean energy” link provided by Joel, above:
“‘Why are we trying to jam down this legislation now?’ asked Sen. George Voinovich, R-Ohio. ‘Wouldn’t it be smarter to take our time and do it right?’”

This is Republican-speak for, “We need more time to water this thing down so it won’t change the way things are!”

  2. “… but can he [President Obama] convince global-warming skeptics of the need for climate legislation?”

Global-warming skeptics are using the fact that we are in the downward, cooling phase of the sunspot cycle to try to claim we need to burn more fossil fuels to offset the cooling, ignoring the fact that temperature trends have been oscillating upward through the decades.

1998 was the hottest year on record, and though it’s cooled since because we entered the sun’s downward temperature phase (less sunspots, less fusion activity w/i the sun, less solar flares), temperatures are poised to go up still higher than 1998 as the sun begins its more sunspot-intensive phase and atmospheric CO2 levels continue to rise. Just because it gets cold this winter, and a blizzard hits somewhere, doesn’t mean global warming isn’t real.

350 ppm needs to be the maximum CO2 concentration we allow in our atmosphere to stop the upward oscillation trend.

  3. “‘Montana can’t afford the unmitigated impacts of climate change,’ [Montana Senator Max] Baucus acknowledged. ‘But we also cannot afford the unmitigated effects of climate change legislation.’ While the state is a producer and user of coal, it also has seen early effects of a warming trend, including melting glaciers and pine trees damaged from beetle infestations.”

Yeah, Glacier National Park has been losing its namesake glaciers considerably since its founding decades ago; and the bark beetles, which thrive on pines weakened by overall warming temps than the pines are genetically conditioned for, are becoming an epidemic in Western forests. Can Montana afford the loss of tourism, scenery, soil, and lumber?

    The U.S. Forest Service:
“Facts: Trees are dying. Bark beetles are killing pine and spruce trees throughout northern Colorado , southern Wyoming and the western U.S. Although bark beetle outbreaks are natural, the current outbreak is a major threat to regional economics and public safety. The area most affected by beetles is the heart of Colorado ’s tourism industry.
“Bark beetles now impacted more than 1.5 million acres in northern Colorado and southern Wyoming.
“Extended droughts, warm winters and old dense forests have caused this epidemic to become so vast.
“This epidemic cannot be stopped. The Forest Service and numerous partners are working to reduce wildfire hazards in affected areas and to promote healthy forests in areas that have not yet been attacked.
“The mass of dead trees following beetle epidemics create severe fire hazards.”

Suzanne: “I can’t even believe you didn’t mention the poor diseased saguaros..”
Well, Suzanne, a search on the matter didn’t yield any real information at all tying saguaro cactus deaths with global warming. What HAS been well-known by biologists since the early 1970s is that excessive or prolonged FREEZING temperatures greatly increase the mortality rate of the very young and very old saguaros. This sensitivity to freezing is one reason why saguaros are more common on southern rather than northern sides of Arizona hills and mountains (at the site nps.org, you can choose the chapter on saguaro mortality and read the Summary and Conclusions there, if you wish). I just haven’t been able to find anything tying saguaro deaths with global warming.

    “..boooo”
Glad to see you’re already in the Halloween spirit, though!

Heh-heh, I say, “No, and no.”

I think they just come out to say, “Thanks for switching more to fluorescent lighting! We ghosts can blend in so much better, now!”

  5. Time to bring out the old Dark Shadows tapes.

An eBay auction planned by abortion foes to raise money for the man accused of killing Wichita abortion George Tiller will not be permitted, company officials said Tuesday.

“Based on the details we know about the anticipated listings, we believe these would violate our policy regarding offensive material,” the company said in a statement issued to The Kansas City Star. “eBay will not permit the items in question to be posted to the eBay site, and they will be removed if they are posted.”

I didn’t think eBay would go along with that. Good for them. But, there’s always Craigslist!!

Looks like Danielle can feel free to continue shopping on eBay, after all!

Fox is just a demonic enterprise of racism and bigotry.

    No need to get excited.

Hitler’s ghost runs the place in the human-shell of Rodger Ailes, but don’t worry.

The nation is corrupted and frisked by rapists daily, but don’t worry.

Remember that Alan Colmes works there with Shep and Greta. They will control the entire network with their wills.

They will save everything from going to hell … sure …

  12. The caller trying to make the argument that oil isn’t a finite resource may have been claiming this …

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Abiogenic_oil

… school of thought that oil isn’t of biological origin. That oil just kind of bubbles up from the Earth’s core or something and that it’s nearly unlimited.

I’m pretty sure this school of thought might also be known as “wishful thinking”.

    John Galt Reply:

The caller trying to make the argument that oil isn’t a finite resource may have been claiming this …

I think everyone knows oil is finite. While I didn’t hear the caller, it may have to do with the fact that oil, like all things, will react to the market. For example, as the price of oil increases, it will allow companies to go after oil that previously didn’t make sense to go after.

In every oil discovery, there are various levels of accessible oil. There is oil that can be obtained when the price of oil is $40. Then there is oil that will be made available when the price hits $50. And so on. So far, there is no indication that we have reached anything close to all of the oil available.

    Tweeter of the Tweet-Tweet.

Somehow I just don’t see Twitter dying as many predicted it would.

It will exist into the future, and like MySpace someone will rip them off and be more successful than they were with the exact same idea.

    Ghosts are nothing to fear.

Though it is natural to be afraid of that which we fail to understand.

  14. Jack Welch -

“This is not a controversial issue [Obama's speech on climate change].”

And yet this shock-jock feels free to make controversial statements about the issue in regards to President Obama.

This is the essence of recent conservative-spin.

Taking any issue, regardless of facts, and turn it into a controversy. Then admit outright that it’s not important and just something of a “rodeo show” or merely comedy or just a musing of yours you might share.

Making things up, or I like to say they are “lying” because that’s really what some of the worst of it comes down to.

I know for a fact that Obama didn’t say that those who support ignoring the environmental impact of relying on non-renewable energy are “against America”.

Clearly, Welch was being dishonest. I’d like some follow-up on his “tape”, which is basically I’d like to hear him try to spin it if he really even has any original-audio.

Neo-cons could care less about national security and economic longevity of our nation. In place of trying to find solutions to our dependence on foreign oil they advocate continued addiction to Mid-Eastern oil and promote band-aid solutions like “drill baby drill!” that would only support industrialists and not the average American working family.

Obama is not saying such things and these conservative-liars could try a little harder to listen to his words and stop making up nonsense that suits their hateful, destructive agenda.

    Proof of Life After Death

    James Van Praagh

Unlike some I can tell the difference between empirical evidence and something called “cold reading”.

I like the standard he set for himself.

His explanation on mediumship was very well put, as well.

Everyone could do such a thing, but only certain people are “sensitive” enough.

My addition to his comments would be a lot of it has to do with that most believe don’t believe in themselves enough to confront the issue of life after death or the unexplained rationally and scientifically.

I am a student of Psychology, and there are a small miinority of people who claim mediumship or telepathy who produce what I’ve seen called an “unexplained event”.

U.S. Constitution & Health Care Reform

I wrote “promote” when I meant “provide” talking about The Constitution on a previous show thread. It’s provide”, not “promote”.

And there is a strong difference between provision and promotion.

The Federal Government is charged with the provision of the general welfare of the people of The United States of America.

This is what some Congresspeople were saying during town halls. No matter what someone says in ignorance, the question here for Congress is one of “how” and not “if”. The words don’t change just because Fox Broadcasting (GOP-Media-wing) and Clearchannel (GOP-Radio-wing) decided they should.

What shocks me recently is that the liberty and freedom of choice is maintained, as well as The Spirit of The Constitution, in the “opt-out” function proposed as opposed to the outright “individual mandate” function.

I would think this would be the answer to many of the informed and valid concerns we hear from the conservatives (getting more rare by the day in my estimation, by the way) that I don’t entirely ideologically agree with, but I see their point.

As usual the issue is more boring and all about checking out the numbers over the spin. The big problem at this stage in the legislation is that the middle-class would have to take on a burden just due to the budgeting, and the only solution is a round-about with the proposed fines. So they still need to hammer out problems at a very serious level, but this is all an initial bill.

I am saying fear-mongering about the government is more exciting than comparing estimates and actually knowing what the CBO does.

Far more exciting to yell about “-isms”!

    Fascist Broadcasting Comedy Studios …

    *coughs*

    I meant to say:

Fox Broadcasting Company has lost the respect of the discerning public just in exactly this way.

The actual issue avoided while huxsters ask misleading questions or the news-casts are twisted to suit the agenda of the right or lies of radical right wing guests are covered up by the network itself.

The News Wars is taking causalities in terms of the good folks at Fox like Alan, Shep and Greta, such is the way of things. I’d prefer Obama came out against all Foe-News rather just the giant on the mountain top of the disaster. (Which would take more of these metaphorical-causalities, of course.)
