Supreme Court Blocks Release Of Torture Photos

The US Supreme Court has thrown out an appeals court ruling that had ordered the release of photos of detainees being abused by their US captors.

In doing so Monday, the high court cited a recent change in federal law that allows the pictures to be withheld.

The justices issued a brief, and expected, order Monday directing the 2nd U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New York to take another look at a lawsuit filed by the American Civil Liberties Union to obtain the photos of detainee abuse. President Barack Obama at first didn’t oppose the release, but he …

Lindsey Graham Says War More Important Now Than Health Care

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham tells George Stephanopoulos how we’ll be evaluated by the rest of the world by how we handle Afghanistan, that we have to make sure the Taliban never takes over Afghanistan again. But wait a minute…did the last 8 years not exist? Have we not been judged by the redeployment of resources out of Afghanistan to Iraq to fight Bush’s war?  And now Graham is saying that Obama has to make sure we get the job done.

Graham says we should prioritize spending, such as trimming the health care bill “to fight a war we can’t …

David Sirota: Pentagon Loses More Than Cost Of Health Care, Stimulus And Bank Bailout Combined

The amount of money the Pentagon can’t even track would pay for the programs conservatives say cost us too much money. But try telling them we should cut Pentagon waste and account for where the money goes. It wasn’t some left-wing kook, but rather Donald Rumsfeld who said:

“(W)e cannot track $2.3 trillion in (Pentagon spending) … We maintain 20 to 25 percent more base infrastructure than we need to support our forces, at an annual waste to taxpayers of some $3 billion to $4 billion … There are those who will oppose every effort to save taxpayers’ money …

Paul Krugman Demolishes Gobal Warming Skeptics

On ABC’s “This Week,” economist and New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, no stranger to academic discussions, took on the global warming skeptics (via Mediaite).  Purloined emails from a hacked climate research server have been grabbed onto by those who aim to prove global warming is a hoax. Krugman makes the point that “there is not a single smoking gun” in “Climategate.”

Krugman: All those e-mails — people have never seen what academic discussion looks like. There’s not a single smoking gun in there. There’s nothing in there. And the travesty is that people are not able …

Limbaugh Most Influential Conservative: Vanity Fair/”60 Minutes” Poll

By a wide margin, Rush Limbaugh is America’s most influential conservative. He was chosen by 26% in a Vanity Fair/“60 Minutes” poll.  Glenn Beck came in at 11% and real politicians Dick Cheney and Sarah Palin came in at 10% each.

The random national telephone sample of 855 adults was conducted by CBS News from Nov. 6-8. The margin for error is plus or minus three percentage points.…

Jon Meacham: Why Cheney Should Run In 2012

jon_meacham

How about a Cheney/Palin ticket, then? Do fantasies come any bolder for Democrats? Jon Meacham (right) in Newsweek makes his case for a 2012 Cheney run.

Because Cheney is a man of conviction, has a record on which he can be judged, and whatever the result, there could be no ambiguity about the will of the people. The best way to settle arguments is by having what we used to call full and frank exchanges about the issues, and then voting. A contest between Dick Cheney and Barack Obama would offer us a bracing referendum on competing visions. One …

Party Crashers Want To Be Money Cashers

Salahi_11.28

Bad enough they pulled a stunt to try to become reality TV stars. Now they’ve canceled a Larry King appearance to try to make mid-six figures by selling their story (h/t tvnewser)

The [TV] executive, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the network does not publicly discuss bookings, told The Associated Press that representatives for Michaele and Tareq Salahi contacted networks to urge them to “get their bids in” for an interview. The executive said the Virginia couple was looking for a payment in the mid-six figures range.…

The Case Against Military Tribunals

Napolitano-headshot

For one thing military tribunals can only be used in war, and we haven’t declared.  Fox News’ Senior Judicial Analyst, Judge Andrew Napolitano (right), lays out the case.

(h/t Laffy)

Bush initially ordered that no law or treaty applied to these detainees and that no judge could hear their cases, and thus he could detain whoever he decided was too risky to release and whoever he was satisfied had participated in terrorist attacks against the U.S. He made these extra-constitutional claims based, he said, on the inherent powers of the commander in chief in wartime. But in the …
