RNC Slow To Remove Racist Photos From Facebook Page

November 1st, 2009, 9:24 PM EST

It may be labor-intensive to keep track of every nutball who posts something to the Republican National Committee’s Facebook page, but one would think they wouldn’t want this imagery hanging around for a week.  That’s how long it took them to remove a series of photos that don’t reflect well on them.

Among them was a picture of President Barack Obama eating fried chicken, subtitled with a call to prohibit interracial marriage. The photo’s caption read: “Miscegenation is a CRIME against American Values. Repeal Loving v. Virginia.”

  1. The Republicans have always been loathe to do anything about racists or bigots in their ranks.
They make excuses for them and find things such as code words to shoot them winks of approval…

    You nailed it, Burqa.

The whole of their movement is not racist, but they have proven time and time again they do not care to address racism within their own ranks and even endorse people as their reps who obviously are racists themselves (Joe Wilson).

    piffle Reply:

And your evidence that Joe Wilson is a racist is…?

Or are you a telepath like Maureen Dowd?

    flap Reply:

Piffle, shouting something to a black person is obviously racism to the highest degree. You can’t see that?

    jasperjava Reply:

Joe Wilson has been (still is?) a member of the Sons of Confederate Veterans, a neo-confederate outfit which defends slavery as a benign institution, and has a camp named after John Wilkes Booth. Many in the group are outright secessionist. Their publication, The Southern Mercury, is full of crude white supremacist rants.

He was one of the last die-hards to defend flying the confederate battle flag at the State Legislature. He has attacked Strom Thurmond’s bi-racial daughter for coming out and identifying her parentage, saying that she “smeared” Thurmond for being her father’s daughter.

So yeah, if he’s not a racist, he makes a pretty good attempt at looking like one.

    No, but:

The president of the Young Republicans, elected AFTER she called Obama a “coon”, and other racial slurs.

Republicanmarket selling Can We Still Call it the Whitehouse buttons and the curious George doll, at state Republican conventions.
The cartoon eyes on the president’s photo page, “GOP Rep. Behind “Great White Hope” Remark Voted For Bill With Same Phrase
The Chaffey Community Republican Women of California: A picture in their regular newsletter of Barack Obama “Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama surrounded by a watermelon, ribs and a bucket of fried chicken.”

In June, Diann Jones, the vice chairman of the Collin County Republican Party in Texas sent an e-mail to local Republican clubs calling a proposal for a $50 gun tax “another terrific idea from the black house and its minions.”

Also in June, South Carolina Republican activist Rusty DePass compared an escaped gorilla from a Columbia zoo to first lady Michelle Obama’s ancestors.

Last October, John McCain’s campaign ousted a Buchanan County, Va., McCain campaign official, Bobby May, for writing a newspaper column that said that if Obama were elected he’d hire rapper Ludacris to paint the White House black and change the national anthem to the “Negro National Anthem” by James Weldon Johnson.

Dean Grose, mayor of Los Alamitos, sendt around a picture of the White House surrounded by a watermelon garden

The Florida Republican state committeewoman Carol Carter, who sent the e mail:
    I’m confused
How can 2,000,000 blacks get into Washington, DC in 1 day in sub zero temps when 200,000 couldn’t get out of New Orleans in 85 degree temps with four days notice?

I would think that if you wanted to engage in real criticism of real policies, Republicans would cringe at this stuff, instead of getting defensive.

If you’re trying to convince me that saying stupid, racially insensitive remarks/jokes makes you a racist, I’m not biting.

But what do I care? I’ll be called a racist by you people just because I’m a conservative.

I am in agreement that it should have been taken down, but why does flying the Confederate Battle Flag automatically make you a racist? I mean, honestly? Many people view it as an important part of their heritage. They’re all racists?

The Blut Fahne is also part of Germany’s heritage. Maybe they should fly it at the Reichstag.

Yes, OldLefty, please don’t confuse Flap with any facts. It means nothing since his only news source is Glen “lonesome roads” Beck.

    OldLefty Reply:

Wow, Flap, I just saw this.

Of course the above things are examples of racism by party officials.

While I have exchanged many accusations of partisanship with those on the other side, I’ve never called you a racist, or anyone on this site who disagrees with Democrats.

I do think it is obvious that there is a problem and while I don’t think most Republicans are racist, denunciation of these racial slurs by the leadership is conspicuous in it’s absence.

    flap Reply:

“Of course the above things are examples of racism by party officials.”

No, no, the definition of racism is too broad now. They may be racially insensitive, but I don’t brand stuff as racism unless it meets a high standard. The word has become diluted.

“I’ve never called you a racist, or anyone on this site who disagrees with Democrats.”

    No, you’re very fair, Oldlefty.

“Yes, OldLefty, please don’t confuse Flap with any facts. It means nothing since his only news source is Glen “lonesome roads” Beck.”

And your only source is the Daily Kos and Olbermann. Funny how I listen to ALAN COLMES a lot and you accuse me of only receiving my news from Glenn Beck.

I have nothing to prove to you or any other lib, because you’re gonna call conservatives racists, bigots, homophobes no matter what they say. Standard operating procedure…I get that. That’s why I don’t get TOO offended (most of the time), because I expect that garbage to be hurled my direction. Call me a racist…if that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy at night to brand people with false labels as you clutch your “Hope & Change” Obama banner, go ahead.

My point is that the word racism has become diluted.

“Yeah, dem lazy, good-fer-nuttin’ niggahs don’t have no sense o’ humor.

Jes’ cuz I hates niggahs don’t make me no racist.”

Are you trying to make a joke? Isn’t that hypocritical? Pathetic. Have you taken Psych 101? It’s called projection, bro.

“The Blut Fahne is also part of Germany’s heritage. Maybe they should fly it at the Reichstag.”

Are you equate Southerners with Nazis? I’m a little unclear on the comparison. Are all our Founding Fathers evil since they had slaves? I suppose all statues of Washington, Jefferson, etc. need to come down because they owned slaves and it might offend people. In fact, we might want to tear up the Constitution because it was written by those who owned slaves. Everything was tarnished by slavery so we need to get rid of it all.

I’m actually in partial agreement with you on this…I don’t particularly like the Confederate flag because it does represent some bad things, but again it doesn’t make people automatic racists because they fly it. I personally would never fly it. I’m proud of being a Southerner but I’m an American above all.

    jasperjava Reply:

So using racial slurs isn’t racist? That definition is “too broad”?

What do you have to do to be a racist, Flap? Lynch ‘em from the nearest tree?

To me, you’re a racist if you discriminate against people on the basis of race. That includes deliberately using racially insensitive language to offend people.

The Founding Fathers have to be understood as a product of their time. By today’s standards, Jefferson and even Lincoln would be considered flaming racists, but during their time they were in the vanguard of tolerance. Given a period of adjustment, men of their intelligence would abandon their racist attitudes if they were alive today. Lincoln would be ashamed at what his party has become.

I make the comparison between the Blutfahne and the Confederate battle flag because they both represent evil ideologies: genocide and slavery, respectively. The Confederate flag represents the enslavement of people based solely on the color of their skin. The death toll and suffering it represents is comparable to the Nazis, only over a longer period of time.

    flap Reply:

“That includes deliberately using racially insensitive language to offend people.”

Which you used in your “niggah” jokes…so are you a racist?

There’s too much “gotcha” going on. What is racism? Racists believe they are superior because of their race or another race is inferior. How do racially insensitive jokes automatically reflect that?

Many people who use those racially insensitive jokes may very well be racists…I just think the word “racist” has lost a lot of meaning through overuse. Save it for the idiots who truly deserve it.

  2. Since Nixon and the Southern Strategy, the Republicans have NEEDED the white racists in their coalition. They’re a necessary part of their electoral success. In fact, they have NO HOPE of winning elections without appealing to racist conservatives. Denouncing racism, and throwing racists out of their party, would condemn them to permanent minority status.

Fortunately, most of the time they don’t have to do too much to court the racist vote. Those people would never vote for the Democratic Party, especially with Barack Obama as the visible leader. This type of Republican sees the Democrats as a party overrun with minorities.

Now that Republicans are actively purging their moderate wing, they may have to be more explicit to make sure they turn out the racist vote. Look for more code words like “Real Americans”, and racially-tinged attack ads like the “Call me” ad they ran against Harold Ford Jr. in Tennessee.

“You start out in 1954 by saying, ‘Nigger, nigger, nigger! By 1968 you can’t say ‘nigger’ – that hurts you. Backfires. So you say stuff like forced busing, states’ rights and all that stuff. You’re getting so abstract now [that] you’re talking about cutting taxes, and all these things you’re talking about are totally economic things and a by-product of them is [that] blacks get hurt worse than whites.”

The only good news in all this is that they are going to lose their electorate one way or the other.

Not everyone is a white Protestant male anymore.

Getting less and less common to find these Randal Terry / Sean Hannity / John Boehner / Joe Wilson-wannabes.

    Give it time.

They will get third-party numbers before long if they keep mindlessly attacking Hispanics, Blacks, secularists, liberals, and Muslims.

  3. People need to get acquainted with the author of the Southern Strategy, Harry Dent, who literally carried a pee-pee bucket for Strom Thurmond.
Dent had two rather well-known acolytes – Lee Atwater and Karl Rove.

It is important to understand the way they went from being blatant to finding ways of disguising code words and things in order to send a nod and a wink to the racists out there.
When they do, now there are always explanations and excuses where they think they are being clever in giving themselves an “out.”

As a Southerner, I recognize it and don’t buy the excuses and explanations because I know what they are really saying when they support the “state right” to decide on displaying the Confederate battle flag or when they hustle up the well-worn path to Bob Jones University or any number of othe things….

Wow! You are actually on the right track! You see what talking to liberals will get ya? “Enlightened” I believe is the word. I’m sick and tired of people falling just short of dropping to their hands and knees and worshiping The Constitution as though it is completely infallible and divine. Although it was significantly progressive for its time can you really hold it sacred when in one breath it states that ALL men are created equal but yet did not even attempt to ban slavery?? The Constitution is dated and is in bad need of a redux, millennium style. Maybe in this one when it states ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL it will mean, Blacks, Whites, Asian, gays, etc. and not just White men whose ancestors came from England.
