  1. Sen. Hutchinson & the Newshour say one of the Ft. Hood shooters was an army psychiatrist, which only confirms everything I’ve ever suspected about psychiatrists, and, no, I am not joking.

  2. The Fort Hood shootings were awful and my heart and prayers go out to the families and other loved ones of the victims.
Now is not the time to jump to conclusions or interject politics, but to grieve that our country has lost a dozen or so of those who volunteered to protect us.

  3. Alan, you inadvertently insulted Islam. You said that if you take any old religious book and say that it is the literal truth then any religion will have problems (or something like that, I was driving) It is ESSENTIAL to my religion, Islam, that the Koran is the inerrant word of God. Not metaphor. Not merely divinely inspired as many or most Christians think of the Bible. No, in Islam, the Koran is the inerrant word of God given to us through the Prophet. That is why it can only be properly read in Arabic, the language in which God spoke to man through his Prophet. To say “any religion that takes some book to be literal truth…. ” is actually to single out one religion, Islam, as being uniquely problematic. Please do not single out and insult Islam in this way.

    Ibrahim:

1.You are under a misimpression of other religions, including Christianity. A good number people “practising” those other religions believe some book “is the inerrant word of God”. Your “ESSENTIAL to my religion” statement is exactly what other people believe, too.

2.Alan was addressing the question “Is that belief true?”. This is an academic question that can be posed by ANYBODY about ANYTHING. You may or may not be able to counter it. But to construe that question as an Insult to your religion IS the real Insult to your religion.

Ibrahim, if you were to manage to go back 1200 years in a time machine and try to speak Arabic to the people then, it would be impossible for you to communicate.
That is how much language changes over time.
The same is true if a person were to try that in any other language.

If Islam is what you believe it to be, it should do just fine in spite of what Alan or anyone else says about it. Your reaction would be appropriate if it is a weak, delicate faith that can not withstand even mild criticism or misunderstanding.
