While her case against reform, Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann wore an Hawaiian lei.

In response, Congressman Earl Blumenauer of Oregon offered this Tweet:

  1. Nothing substantive to say, she just wanted to play to the camera! The only legislator to do so the entire day

  2. Heh, Bachman got her “JD” from Oral Roberts University.

    That explains everything.

  3. Palin/Bachmann 2012…what a ticket!

    This would be breathtaking. Literally.

    The death of the GOP.

May your dream come true, Flap. Should guarantee 4 more years of Obama/Biden.

It would be a landslide. The Repubs might hold on to their strongholds (hard to imagine Mississippi or Alabama voting for Obama) but they’d lose almost everything else, including Alaska.

I often see liberals post “Palin/Bachmann 2012!!!” on comments sections such as these, as pure snark. I honestly didn’t think any Republicans would actually seriously consider that.

I mean, would they even have triple-digit IQ combined? We know that Republicans don’t put much stock on intelligence, knowledge, or even sanity, but this is ridiculous.

Maybe not Palin/Bachman, but Palin is the darling of the pundits and has been for some time now….

  4. Hawaii already has employer-mandated health care for anyone working over 20 hours a week, so Hawaii was allowed to “opt-out” under this bill.

I wonder if Michele Bachman is aware that Hawaii’s system is communist!

Probably not; she’s clueless about most everything.

  5. Bachman hasn’t realized the earth isn’t flat…

  6. Looks like a bad lei to me………………..

I was going to comment about Bachmann getting lei’d, but you beat me to it.

    Almost too easy.
    I’d prefer a Frito Lei…..

Weird looking lei. Maybe it’s made out of some noxious Hawai’ian weeds and the islanders were making fun of her.

Most of the common leis in Hawaii (and actually my favorite ones) are made from the yellow plumeria, a Mexican-imported shrub/tree which blooms from May to October (which is the rainy season in Mexico), and then drops its leaves in winter (not because it’s cold, but because it’s the dry season in Mexico). The aroma is heavenly –one of the greatest fragrances on earth. You can smell the trees for miles in June.

There is another species, the Hong Kong plumeria, which is almost identical and blooms year-round, but it’s not nearly as fragrant nor abundant.

From the looks of this picture, Ms. Bachman is wearing a lei made from purple orchids (no fragrance), although there are some rare leis made from Hawaiian native plants of this color.

It’s an honor to wear a lei made from some of the sacred plants, and I seriously doubt a casual visitor would know where to find one: they are custom-made for weddings and other special occasions. You almost gotta be a local to know these secrets.

So my vote is orchids, which are coming into bloom this time of year.

It’s not the Hawaiian way to be nasty toward anyone; but I do think Ms. Bachman was taking advantage of this as a prop, instead of as a symbol of aloha.

  7. that tweet is hilarious.

  8. Oh that is so nice to know she was wearing a lei. I caught her for a moment voting on something else but didn’t have time to listen. I did wonder what in the world she was wearing and who her new designer is. Such a relief!
