081107-billy-graham

50691650

While greeting admirers at Florida’s “The Villages” retirement community, one resident called her “President Palin” and others shouted “We love you and we want you to be president.”  The big debate seemed to be whether she should run in 2012 or 2016. (h/t Think Progress)

“I addressed her as ‘President Palin,’ ” said Debbie McMillan of Orlando. “She said, ‘I like that very much — I could live with that.’ “

Phony “Climategate” Aside, Climate Change Moving Faster Than Expected

20080728_sun

Climate scientists who just released “The Copenhagen Diagnosis” say ice sheets are melting at an increased rate, and future sea-level rise will be higher than previously forecast.  But scientific evidence means nothing to those with an anti-global warming agenda, who point to illegally hacked mails to try to prove that global warming is a hoax.  Sadly for them, the anti-global-warming hysteria isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

The ugly part of this has more to do with scientists jockeying for position and arguing over how to best put forth their theories in a contentious …

Republican candidates who don’t meet 8 out of 10 items in its purity test will be denied funding by the party, according to its new resolution, which calls for “Republican solidarity in opposition to Obama’s socialist agenda.”

A candidate who disagrees, “as identified by the voting record, public statements and/or signed questionnaire of the candidate, shall not be eligible for financial support and endorsement by the Republican National Committee,” the resolution says.

Several Republican candidates already in play wouldn’t qualify for office under these rules put out by committeeman Jim Bopp.

Is Religion Bad For America?

gregpaul

According to researcher Gregory S. Paul (right) in Evolutionary Psychology, prosperity is highest in countries where religion is practiced least.

Using existing data, Paul combined 25 indicators of societal and economic stability — things like crime, suicide, drug use, incarceration, unemployment, income, abortion and public corruption — to score each country using what he calls the “successful societies scale.” He also scored countries on their degree of religiosity, as determined by such measures as church attendance, belief in a creator deity and acceptance of Bible literalism.

Comparing the two scores, he found, with little exception, that the …

Charities Need Your Help More Than Ever This Thanksgiving

food

ThinkProgress points out that due to the recession, charities that provide food to the needy can’t keep up with demand:

Hunger relief agency Feeding America found that 99 percent of food banks reported increases in demand for emergency food aid. But due to weak donations, 78 percent have had to reduce the amount of food provided and 55 percent have had to turn people away.

The Online NewsHour explains that the problem began to worsen last year:

[A]lmost 50 million Americans had a hard time putting food on the table in 2008 — one in seven American households, …
