Authorities say census worker Bill Sparkman staged his death to look like a murder. If Sparkman lost his life on the job his family would be eligible for a $10,000 payout, but not so if he committed suicide.
Investigators say Sparkman acted alone in manipulating the scene to conceal the suicide.
They believe he killed himself and made it look like a murder because he’d recently taken out two life insurance policies that wouldn’t pay out for suicide.
While the left is accused by the right of wanting Sparkman’s death to be because of wingnut anti-government behavior, it’s …

On the 150 anniversary of the publication of Darwin’s Origin of Species, Christian activists are giving away 170,000 copies of the text. But there’s a catch.
The book, however, contains a ‘Special Introduction’ by evangelist Ray Comfort that argues against Darwin’s theory and presents a creationist alternative to man’s origins and nature’s growth.
The free book-giveaway has angered a number of atheists and prompted evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins, a former Oxford University and University of California professor and one of the leading spokesmen for atheism and evolution, to encourage people to “just rip out” the 50-page introduction.…

Normally, the Department of Defense prohibits partisan events from occurring at military installations, but the rules were bent for Sarah Palin, who is regarded as a private citizen who is not campaigning. So it was especially odd that Fort Bragg was the scene of attacks on the Commander-in-Chief. And, since the event was deemed non-political, it was odd that donations were ecouraged for Palin’s political action committee.
Palin’s father, who greeted visitors as his daughter signed copies of the book, said in an interview that Obama’s handling of the military was “scary.”
“I see a decline in our …

While critics continue to criticize President Obama for taking his time to decide troop levels for Afghanistan, the U.S. Special Representative for Afghanistan and Pakistan says, “This is the most thorough, most sustained, most thoughtful process I have ever seen. And over the long course of it, we have all learned a great deal from each other, in a way which I think is exactly the way decisions should be made.”
In a movement toward peace and reconciliation, militants including Taliban members may be invited to a summit.
The Obama administration is giving a cautious nod of approval to …

Chicago reporter Kristen McQueary researched claims that a family saying they lost their grandchild and daughter-in-law because of lack of heath care insurance were not telling the truth.
The family, Dan and Midge Hough, of Chicago, spoke in favor of health care reform and in support of U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-3rd) at a Nov. 14 town hall meeting in Oak Lawn.
Their daughter-in-law, Jenny, and an unborn grandchild died recently due in part, they believe, to a lack of health insurance. They said Jenny was not receiving regular prenatal care and ended up in an emergency room with …

Wiley Drake, who told me he practices imprecatory prayer calling for the death of the president, now says Obama should first be tried and convicted of treason (via RightWingWatch)
Drake said he is now “calling for all of God’s people and prayer warriors to cease the imprecatory prayer, and pray for Mr. Obama’s protection until he can be properly tried for treason.”
Drake attributed his change of heart to “spiritual counsel” of James David Manning, pastor at ATLAH World Missionary Church in New York, contained in a 16 1/2-minute video recorded Nov. 18.
“I have asked men everywhere …

Hate crimes based on sexual orientation were up 11%, and those based on religion were up 9% in 2008, according to new FBI statistics.
Half of all hate crimes are motivated by race, according to the FBI. One out of every five is driven by religious bias, and one out of every six is based on sexual orientation bias.
The new statistics come less than a month after President Barack Obama signed a bill expanding those covered by the federal law against hate crimes. Previously, the law had protected those attacked on the basis of race, color, religion, …
