Man Faces Jail For Giving Immigrants Water

A judge in Tucson is threatening to give Walt Staton (right) 25 days in jail for giving water to immigrants. After leaving jugs of water in the desert for the immigrants, a federal jury convicted him of littering.
In August, a judge ordered Staton to pick up trash for 300 hours and also sentenced him to a year of unsupervised probation and banned him from the refuge for a year.
Staton is a member of the group No More Deaths, which supports humanitarian aid along the border.
He was scheduled to be re-sentenced Friday after he told …

In a radio interview with Rusty Humphries, Sarah Palin says the birthers have a “fair question” about Obama.
HUMPHRIES: Would you make the birth certificate an issue if you ran?
PALIN: Um, I think the public, rightfully, is still making it an issue. I don’t have a problem with that. I don’t know if I would have to bother to make it an issue, because I think enough members of the electorate still want answers.
HUMPHRIES: Do you think it’s a fair question to be looking at?
PALIN: I think it’s a fair …

Mayor Russell Wiseman of Arlington, TN, posted on his Facebook page what he believes is the real reason President Obama gave his speech on Afghanistan when he did.
“Ok, so, this is total crap, we sit the kids down to watch ‘The Charlie Brown Christmas Special’ and our muslim president is there, what a load…..try to convince me that wasn’t done on purpose. Ask the man if he believes that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and he will give you a 10 minute disertation (sic) about it….w…hen the answer should simply be ‘yes’….”

It’s the smallest number of jobs dropped since the start of the recession, with the unemployment rate declining from 10.2% to 10%, a sign of a recovering labor market.
Nonfarm payrolls fell by just 11,000 last month, slowing down from a downwardly revised 111,000 drop seen in October, as the recovery encouraged some companies to retain workers, the Labor Department said Friday.
It was the best showing since December 2007, when the recession began and payrolls had risen by 120,000. Economists surveyed by Dow Jones Newswires had expected a payroll decrease of 125,000.…

At a rally held by Pam Geller of the right-wing website Atlas Shrugs, and including Islam-basher Robert Spencer, ostensibly to show support for Rifqa Bary, the participants were more interested in using the occasion to slam Islam. Bary is the teen who claims her Muslim parents want to kill her because she’s become a Christian, and Islam-haters have used her to promote their bigotry, in spite of the fact that authorities have found no credibility to her claims. The anti-Islam bigotry is especially sad in light of the fact that we are poised to send more Americans …

Defense Secretary Robert Gates is now saying the Afghanistan surge could require more than the already-requested 30,000 troops. He told Congress 3000 more support troops could be needed (h/t Buzzflash)
During testimony on Capitol Hill Thursday, Mr. Gates said he has to be able to give the battlefield commander what he needs and if that means deploying slightly more forces, he will do that.
“One of the things that I’ve tried to make clear consistently is that when you’re looking ahead, it is impossible to foresee every need,” Gates told a Senate panel reviewing the new Afghan strategy. …

Michelle Deferio and her father, of Syracuse, NY, stood on the campus of Syracuse University with a sign saying “Homosexuality is a sin, Christ can set you free.” Junior drama major Chris Pesto sprang into action, and explained the whole thing on his Facebook page (via fbomb).
Today (Wednesday, November 18th) I left my voice lesson and noticed two adults on campus holding signs that said “Homosexuality is a sin”. First, I would just like to say that I support people with their own opinions. I think that everyone is entitled to their right to think what they want. …
