Rep. Jack Kingston Joined Demonstrators To Kill The Bill “In Jesus’s Name”

“With God before us, who can stand against us?” implored one of the demonstrators, standing alongside Georgia Congressman Jack Kingston. “Father God,” another implored, “we stand with our representative; we stand with this congressman who is a man of God, and who honors your name.” And then she asks God to “save and spare America.” Congressman Kingston thanks the crowd saying, “Believe me, ya’ll are making a difference.”

The Shame Of The Republicans

It’s not just that they fought against insuring 32 million Americans, and cared more about depriving Democrats and the president of a a political victory than of doing what’s right for Americans. It’s that they behaved like children and set a poor example for real children.  Yelling “Socialism!” “Communism!” “Tyranny!” and hurling the “N” word and making homophobic remarks do not speak well of them.  And then, on the day of the vote, Republicans went out of their way to incite an unruly crowd of tea partiers.

Thousands of conservative “tea party” activists had massed on the south side of …

Rep. Bart Stupak Hit By Childish GOP “Baby Killer” Outburst On House Floor

by Thomas Wellborn

During Congressman Bart Stupak’s impassioned speech in support of health care reform on the House floor, a Republican shouted “baby killer” at him, prompting a resounding demand from another Democratic lawmaker, “Who said that?” Republicans fell silent, and so far nobody has owned up to their inability to control themselves in a civilized manner.

From Think Progress: CNN’s David Gergen observed that Republicans had joined rowdy, and at times vulgar, tea party protesters all weekend in rallying against the bill. He warned that the heavy influence of the tea parties, Rush Limbaugh, and other extreme right-wing …

Congressman Jim Clyburn: “This Is The Civil Rights Act Of The 21st Century”

clyburn

South Carolina Congressman Jim Clyburn, the top-ranking black member of the House, framed the Democratic health care victory in terms reminiscent of the civil rights battles of decades past, saying, “This is the civil rights act of the 21st century.” But House Minority Leader John Boehner complained, “We have failed to listen to America.”  However, that seems not to be true. Wasn’t it America that elected enough Democrats to office to enable this historic vote? And is Boehner saying listening to America means listening to to the insurance industry?

The insurance industry, which spent millions on advertising trying to block …

Boehner Lies Again, Insisting America’s Health Care is The Best In The World

boehner1237924322

by Thomas Wellborn

Parading the lie yet again, Rep. John Boehner put U.S. Health Care at the top of the list as the world’s best, and David Gregory didn’t bat an eyelash, let alone move to question or correct him.  Instead, Gregory responded by showing an image of Nancy Pelosi riding on a horse, herding cats.  Yes, really.

DAVID GREGORY: Leader Boehner, do they have the votes?

REP. JOHN BOEHNER
: Well, it’s clear from– listening to– to Steny that– they don’t have the votes yet. You have to think about this, 54 speeches by the President of the …

It Takes A Democratic President Issuing An Executive Order To Stop Federal Abortion Funds

This is what it takes to get health care passed. Even though it was already the case that no monies were going to pay for abortions in the health care bill, President Obama had to promise an executive order to get enough votes to reform our health care system.

Following the recent passage of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“the Act”), it is necessary to establish an adequate enforcement mechanism to ensure that Federal funds are not used for abortion services (except in cases of rape or incest, or when the life of the woman would be endangered), …

Key Provisions Of The Health Care Reform Bill

health-care-reform

Here are the main provisions of the health care reform bill:

  • The legislation would require substantial insurance market reforms that would bar insurers from excluding people for pre-existing conditions and prevent them from arbitrarily dropping policy holders.
  • Insurance exchanges would be created where small businesses and individuals without employer-sponsored coverage would be able to shop for coverage. Plans offered on the exchange would have to meet minimum benefit requirements.
  • Individuals would be required to obtain health insurance. Those who fail to purchase coverage would face fines of up to 2.5 percent of income by 2016.
  • Firms with more than 50 …
