It wasn’t enough to insult just gays when kids and parents from Itawamba Agricultural High in Fulton, MS, held a private prom while sending a lesbian couple to a fake one. Constance McMillan was told she couldn’t bring her date to the school prom, so the school canceled it altogether rather than face the controversy, and it was agreed that a private prom would be held and chaperoned by school officials.  However, the lesbian couple was directed to a sham prom at a country club with just five people in addition to McMillan, while a larger, secret prom was held elsewhere.  Included with the gay couple were children with learning disabilities.

Two students with learning difficulties were among the seven people at the country club event, McMillen recalls. “They had the time of their lives,” McMillen says. “That’s the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn’t have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom].”

It’s unclear how the phony prom was organized or who was behind it. A court case was brought by the ACLU, and the judge said McMillan and her date could not be barred.

The judge declined to force the school district to hold the prom because a parent-sponsored, private prom was being organized — and the understanding was that McMillen and her date were invited to that event. But [Chris] Hampton [of the ACLU] says McMillen was never invited and organizers made it very difficult for her to find information on the time and location. That prom was later mysteriously canceled, with the Friday night event at the country club officially replacing it.
