Feds Take Closer Look At GOP Spending In Florida
GOP spending in Florida is the subject of a criminal investigation spearheaded by the U.S. Attorney’s office, the Internal Revenue Service, and the FBI. The agencies will review a paper trail that includes federal tax forms and state financial disclosure documents in an effort to resolve whether or not the Republican Party’s fiscal forays stayed within legal requirements. Since political parties maintain tax-exempt status, the range of legitimate purchases is tightly controlled.
The inquiry focuses on the party’s questionable trail of credit-card purchases stemming from a state-level investigation of Ray Sansom. The IRS will now explore possible income tax irregularities with respect to former Florida House Speaker Marco Rubio, ex-state party chairman Jim Greer and ex-party executive director Delmar Johnson. Numerous questions exist as to the validity of some actual purchases (golfing expeditions, chartered planes) and the status of monies due for reimbursement.
Representatives acknowledge several types of accounting irregularities – double-billing, incorrect billing, and incomplete reimbursements – yet maintain no financial misconduct was knowingly committed.Click here for reuse options!
