Faisal Shahzad, the suspect in the attempted Times Square car bombing, listened to the 10-count indictment being read to him, indicated he understood the charges, and then said, “I want to plead guilty 100 times over.”
Mr. Shahzad described his training in Pakistan, where he said he went to learn from the Pakistani Taliban how to build a bomb that he planned to detonate in the United States.
His guilty plea was consistent with his behavior since his arrest on May 3, when he began cooperating with federal authorities for more than two weeks without counsel and waived his Miranda …

The Supreme Court upheld the most controversial part of the Patriot Act, the material support law, that says it is illegal to teach peaceful means to members of terrorist groups.
The majority opinion, written by Chief Justice John Roberts, says that Congress intentionally wrote the statute with a broad sweep to outlaw material support to terror groups in any form, including assistance or expertise that might help nudge the group toward nonviolence.
Chief Justice Roberts quoted a congressional finding in support of his broad reading of the statute: “[F]oreign organizations that engage in terrorist activity are so tainted by …

The Obama administration is affirming that the pullout of troops from Afghanistan will begin in July 2011.
“That’s not changing. Everybody agreed on that date,” Rahm Emanuel said, adding by name the top three officials overseeing the policy girding the war: Gen. David Petraeus, Defense Secretary Robert Gates and the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Adm. Mike Mullen.
Petraeus, the war’s top military boss, said last week that he would recommend delaying the pullout if conditions in Afghanistan warranted it. Days after the date was announced in December, Gates pointedly said it was not a deadline.
Defense Secretary …

At a Friday town hall meeting Arizona Senator Jon Kyl claimed that President Obama told him that he refuses to secure the border without comprehensive immigration reform.
KYL: I met with the president in the Oval Office, just the two of us …. Here’s what the president said. The problem is, he said, if we secure the border, then you all [Republicans] won’t have any reason to support comprehensive immigration reform. (Audible gasps from audience.) In other words, they’re holding it hostage. They won’t want to secure the border unless and until it is combined with comprehensive immigration reform.…

After being dis-invited from a political fundraiser and a tea party event because of his comment that President Obama “favors the black person” by default, Congressman Steve King of Iowa appeared at the “United We Stand Behind Arizona” event. Tone deaf to his own biases, King suggested that every time an illegal immigrant is allowed in America a liberal should be deported. (h/t Think Progress)
King said that under only one circumstance does he support amnesty for illegal immigrants: “Every time we give amnesty for an illegal alien, we deport a liberal.”
King was sympathetic to a questioner …

BP says the oil spill has cost $2 billion so far, and there is no end in sight.
The British oil giant released its latest tally of response costs Monday, including $105 million paid out so far to 32,000 claimants. The figure does not include a $20 billion fund that BP PLC last week agreed to set up to continue compensating Gulf residents and businesses. There are also scores of lawsuits piling up against BP for the April 20 rig explosion that killed 11 workers and ensuing oil spill that has yet to be capped.
Also Monday, the man …

President Obama may yet veto a bill that repeals the repressive “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell” policy, because it may be attached to spending that is unacceptable, says Defense Secretary Robert Gates.
Obama supports repealing the law, and the White House has pushed for quicker congressional action than the Pentagon has favored. Gates also supports repeal.
But Gates tells “Fox News Sunday” that Obama probably still would veto an upcoming spending bill that includes the repeal — if the bill also contains money for defense projects he says are wasteful.
Gates wants to get rid of an aircraft engine and additional …

Connecticut Senator Joe Lieberman spoke in favor of a “kill switch” that would allow the president to claim national security as an excuse to disable parts of the Internet.
“We need this capacity in a time of war. We need the capacity for the president to say, internet service provider, we’ve got to disconnect the American internet from all traffic coming in from another foreign country, or we have to put a patch on this part of it,” Lieberman told CNN’s Candy Crowley Sunday.
“So I say to my friends on the internet, relax. Take a look at the bill. …

Adam Gadahn, a southern California-born spokesman for al Qaeda, has reiterated the group’s conditions for peace.
Adam Gadahn called on President Barack Obama to withdraw his troops from Iraq and Afghanistan, end support for Israel, stop intervening in the affairs of Muslims, and free Muslim prisoners.
In the second, 24-minute part of a video released in March and posted on militant websites Sunday, Gadahn said the Democrats’ loss in January of the Massachusetts Senate seat underlined Mr. Obama’s falling popularity.
In white robes and turban, Gadahn told Mr. Obama: “You’re no longer the popular man you once were, a …

The Winstons had one smash hit, in 1969, a Grammy-winning song that has become the National Anthem of Father’s Day. Richard Spencer headlined the Washington, DC based group, which also featured Ray Maritano, Quincy Mattison, Phil Tolotta, Sonny Peckrol, and G.C. Coleman. Mattison and Coleman had also played with Otis Redding. The Winstons became the back-up performers with the Impressions. The war theme of this masterpiece, and how it affects families, is especially relevant.
