Five Republicans Who Denounce Tea Parties

Talking Points Memo has the top five Republicans hating on the tea parties.
1. Senator Bob Bennett of Utah, defeated in a GOP primary.
In an interview with the Associated Press last week, Bennett said tea partiers are actually helping Democrats, given their support of novice candidates like Sharron Angle who might blow chances at unseating the party in power.
“With the tea party creating the mischief that it is in Colorado, we may not win that seat. My sources in Nevada say with Sharon Angle there’s no way Harry Reid loses in Nevada,” Bennett said. He also said …

There are questions regarding a link between BP oil’s desire to get Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi released and its $900 million contract with Libya for oil exploration.
Soon after al-Megrahi’s release last year, BP acknowledged that it urged the British government to sign a prisoner transfer agreement with Libya, but stressed it didn’t specify his case. It reiterated that stance this week when four U.S. Democratic senators asked the State Department to investigate whether there was a quid pro quo for the Lockerbie bomber’s release.

Al-Megrahi served eight years of a life sentence for the Dec. 21, 1988, …

Former Federal Reserve Chairman Alan Greenspan was instrumental in convincing Congress to pass the Bush tax cuts in 2001, but now says it’s time to end them. (h/t Greg Sargent)
“They should follow the law and let them lapse,” Greenspan said in an interview on Bloomberg Television’s “Conversations with Judy Woodruff,” citing a need for the tax revenue to reduce the federal budget deficit.
And it’s not just the tax cuts for the rich that Greenspan believes should end.
Greenspan, in a telephone conversation after his Bloomberg TV interview was taped, said his position is that all the expiring …

Hilary Shelton, Director to the Washington Bureau of the NAACP, appeared on radio with me to discuss his group’s proclamation condemning racist elements in the Tea Party movement. I also played for Mr. Shelton recent comments by Rush Limbaugh on the death of George Steinbrenner: “That cracker made a lot of African Americans millionaires.”
Shelton: It’s outrageous. Clearly Rush Limbaugh has reached down to the depths and is so desperate for ratings points that he’ll say anything as outrageous as he needs to get people to pay attention to him. I think it’s time for his sponsors to pay …

Some forensics experts are questioning whether recordings of Mel Gibson were tampered with. Oksana Grigorieva, Mel Gibson’s ex-girlfriend, says she didn’t release the tapes.
Forensic audio and video experts examined the recordings for HollywoodLife.com and believe someone tampered with them, editing the audio, removing parts of conversation and piecing together phrases to make the recordings sound real.
“One of the things that you have to know is that nobody at this point can authenticate it’s Mel’s voice — not 100 percent,” Bonnie Fuller, editor of HollywoodLife.com, said on “Good Morning America” today. “There are words that are edited out, …

RadarOnline has the latest Mel. This is like the Gulf oil flow. Will it ever stop? Maybe they should use that new cap on Gibson.
Screaming, snarling and panting Mel Gibson completely loses it in new audio obtained and released exclusively by RadarOnline.com.
“B*tch, c*nt, whore, gold digger,” Mel yells at Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his eight-month-old daughter.
And in this, the 5th tape released by RadarOnline.com, Gibson comes unhinged and shockingly claims that he is broke. The star has made tens of millions of dollars during his Hollywood career, but yells at Oksana, “I don’t have any …

I’m not sure if anyone has informed Kentucky candidate for United States Senate Rand Paul that part of the job of being a United States senator is deciding on weighty issues such as foreign policy. In an interview with the National Review Paul comments on foreign policy in general and Afghanistan in particular. (h/t Think Progress)
“I’m not thinking about Afghanistan; foreign policy is really a complete non-issue.” He hopes that if he makes it to the Senate, there will be “room for discussion” on foreign-policy issues within the party, especially on Afghanistan. “Within Republican and conservative circles, the …

BP’s new containment cap stopped the oil leak in the Gulf as of 3:25PM ET. Live video of the leak showed no oil at the site where it had been flowing since April.
BP is conducting step-by-stop tests of the massive, 150,000 pound cap on the wellhead, a process that had been beset by delays since they first lowered the device to the leak site Monday night.
First, government officials requested a delay for analysis, out of fears that the cap could damage the leaking well further and do more harm than good. After that 24-hour delay, the test began …
