Virginia Foxx: Crazy or Just Cruel?

Crazy like a (Virginia) Foxx

by Sandi Behrns

Rep. Virginia Foxx, who has inexplicably represented North Carolina’s 5th District for four terms, met her Democratic rival Billy Kennedy Thursday night for their second debate in three days. Foxx got off to a particularly bad start when she attempted to disparage Billy Kennedy’s claim to be a regular working man. She smirked as she held up her own hands as proof that she works. The audience gasped. It seems everyone in attendance knew that Billy Kennedy lost the tip of his index finger in a workplace carpentry accident almost four years ago. Everyone, that is, except Mrs. Foxx.…

Andrew Cuomo Promises To Legalize Gay Marriage In New York

alg_andrew_cuomo_endorsed

Democratic New York gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo says if he is elected governor (and, with Carl Paladino as an opponent, how could he not be?) he will make “equality a reality.”

“I don’t want to be the governor who just proposes marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who lobbies for marriage equality. I don’t want to be the governor who fights for marriage equality. I want to be the governor who signs the law that makes equality a reality in the state of New York,” said the Democratic nominee.

Opponent Carl Paladino doesn’t like children at gay …

Why We Need Government Regulation To Protect Americans

Americans are being thrown out of their homes in some cases because they signed mortgages with disreputable companies. Some of the companies foreclosing on homes are doing so with questionable legality, as Paul Krugman notes.

But do they actually have the right to seize these homes? Horror stories have been proliferating, like the case of the Florida man whose home was taken even though he had no mortgage. More significantly, certain players have been ignoring the law. Courts have been approving foreclosures without requiring that mortgage servicers produce appropriate documentation; instead, they have relied on affidavits asserting that the …

Florida Pastor Who Canceled Quran Burning Wins A NEW CAR!

9ec21b16-be03-4031-b3c0-9ecfb0a26b29-big

Brad Benson, a New Jersey car dealer and former center for the New York Giants, originally offered Pastor Terry Jones a car for a year if he wouldn’t go forward with his threatened Quran burning.

“I just didn’t think that was a good thing for our country right now,” Benson said.

He’s now giving Jones the car outright because he doesn’t want to be connected to whatever the Florida pastor does with it.

Jones said this offer had nothing to do with his decision not to burn the Quran, but rather that he learned of the offer after the fact.…

Anti-Abortion NY Gov. Candidate Paladino Is Landlord To Abortion Clinic

CarlPaladino

Carl Paladino may be against abortion facilities, but he has no trouble housing them and taking their money. Paladino, who is against abortions even in cases of rape or incest, rents to Planned Parenthood of Buffalo. And he even used them to argue for a tax exemption.

Planned Parenthood Advocates of New York President Tracey Brooks accused Paladino of “talking out of one side of his mouth” against abortion while “renting and accepting money from health-care centers he’s looking to cut funding to.”

Paladino cited the presence of a Planned Parenthood center at his Haeberle Plaza shopping center to …

Good News For The Senate–Unless Your Name Is Feingold

story

by Stuart Shapiro

The trends in Senate polling are positive for Democrats. Nate Silver has reduced the chances of Republican takeover to 18% with the most likely outcome being 52 seats in Democratic control.  This includes positive trends in Pennsylvania, Colorado, Nevada, Illinois, and West Virginia.

Control of the Senate, however, will boil down to a relatively small number of races — possibly not more than a half-dozen. And in several of those races, Democrats have made small, but important, gains.

While Democrats may not win all of these, they only need one to avoid a 50-50 scenario where Joe …

Suffolk County, NY Has A Megan’s Law For Animals

cat_face_d

Megan’s Laws are designed to keep sex offenders from being repeaters. Now, Suffolk County, New York, has created the first animal abuse registry that it hopes stops animal abusers from being repeat offenders.

“We know there is a very strong correlation between animal abuse and domestic violence,” said Suffolk County legislator Jon Cooper, the bill’s sponsor. “Almost every serial killer starts out by torturing animals, so in a strange sense we could end up protecting the lives of people.”

The online list will be open to the public, so that pet owners or the merely curious can find out whether …

Right-wingers Attack Congressman Over Debate Slip (MA-03)

M000312

by Sandi Behrns

The moment the debate ended last night, the clock was ticking on the inevitable. Right-wing blogs would undoubtedly be licking their lips to use video of seven-term Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern (MA-3) making an unfortunate slip of the tongue. Sure enough, first thing this morning right-wing attack site TheOtherMcCain weighed in.  And wouldn’t you guess, a little bit ago, it was posted on Andrew Breitbart’s site as well. What’s all the hub-bub about?

Clearly, McGovern is talking about the Citizens United Supreme Court Decision. In the midst of his otherwise eloquent statement, he accidentally says “I …

Christine O’Donnell Couldn’t Name Supreme Court Decision She Doesn’t Like

101410_ocoonsdel_604x341

At the Delaware U.S. Senate debate with Democrat Chris Coons, Christine O’Donnell was unable to answer when asked if there is a recent Supreme Court decision with which she disagrees.

Asked to name such a court case, O’Donnell paused before responding, “Oh, gosh. Give me a specific one.”

When moderator Nancy Karibjanian of Delaware First Media said that she could not give her an example because the point of the question was for O’Donnell to name a case, O’Donnell apologized and acknowledged she could not name a case.

“I’m very sorry, right off the top of my head, I know …

Obama Wants Hold On Judge’s Ruling Ending Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

The Obama administration is asking a California federal appeals court to stay the recent ruling striking down the ban on gays in the military.

Lawyer Dan Woods said his client, Log Cabin Republicans, which won the ruling on Tuesday, has been notified that the Justice Department “will appeal and seek a stay later today.”

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs would only say that guidance will be coming soon. He did not say what the policies would be.…
