President Obama Signs Repeal Of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell

r

Keeping another campaign promise, President Obama signed into law the bill that repeals the military policy that resulted in firing of 14,000 men and women.

The law “will strengthen our national security and uphold the ideals our fighting men and women defend,” Obama told a cheering crowd of gay and lesbian service members and their supporters in Washington. “No longer will thousands of men and women in uniform be asked to live a lie or look over their shoulder while serving the country they love.”

“Our people sacrifice a lot for their country, including their lives. None of them should …

Republicans Have Their Lieberman, And You Can Thank The Tea Party

M001153

by Stuart Shapiro

I’ll let Steve Benen explain:

Quick quiz — only one Republican senator has sided with Democrats on DADT repeal, the tax deal, New START cloture, and the DREAM Act in the lame-duck session. Who was it?

The obvious guesses would likely be Olympia Snowe (R-Maine), Susan Collins (R-Maine), or Scott Brown (R-Mass.). But the truth is a little further north.

Now no one expects Lisa Murkowski to become a Democrat, but she clearly feels reduced loyalty to the GOP.  Joe Miller has managed to take a reliably Republican vote and turn her into something both parties hate, …

South Carolina Celebrates The 150th Anniversary Of Its Secession

PH2010122105343

The Secession Ball in Charleston was cause for celebration for a number of South Carolinians pining for the good old Civil War days. Hoop skirts and frock coats marked the occasion.

“We are very proud of who we are,” said Chip Limehouse, a South Carolina legislator who rented a historically accurate suit and vest for the formal ball celebrating the anniversary. “This is in our DNA.”

Great-great-great-granddad fought the Yankees, lost his plantation, was bathed in glory, the men and women at the ball like to say. They’re proud of their ancestors, they declare, and that’s why they paid $100 …

Republicans Still Having Problems With Apologies

G000359

by Stuart Shapiro

In fairness, they are getting better at the apology business.  At least they are no longer demanding apologies from folks that they have wronged.  Now, however, they are apologizing to each other on behalf of those who disagree with them.  Lindsey Graham to Jon Kyl (h/t Washington Post):

“I stand here very disappointed in the fact that our lead negotiator on the Republican side… basically is going to have his work product ignored and the treaty jammed through in the lame duck. How as Republicans we justify that I do not know,” Graham said. “To Senator …

smores-300x212

When Sarah Palin wants to go to Haiti to do some good and the media snipes at her she is offended; however, she has no problem sniping at First Lady Michelle Obama who does good by fighting childhood obesity. While scrounging around for ingredients to make S’mores on her reality show, she dedicates the snack to the First Lady “who said the other day we should not have dessert.”

Senator Tom Coburn Vows To Hold Up 9-11 Health Care Bill

OB-LM025_coburn_D_20101221114612

Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn says he will stop the bill to help Ground Zero workers from getting through the Senate before Christmas. The $6.2 billion bill has the votes, but senators can put up procedural hurdles.

The outlay would be covered by a 2% fee on imports and services from companies that are not members of the Agreement on Government Procurement, a treaty of the World Trade Organization. Congress would also continue a fee on travelers to the U.S. and a charge on outsourcing companies that have most of their employees on visas to work in America.

Mr. Coburn wants …

White House Has Enough Votes To Ratify START Treaty

alexander_wide

The White House has the 67 votes needed to ratify the START Treaty, racking up another win. With the support of Lamar Alexander (pictured) the Republican votes are there. The LA Times agrees it is a big win for President Obama.

If he wins the support of at least two-thirds of the Senate for the New START agreement in a vote that may come as early as Tuesday, President Obama could build on the victory as he turns to a long list of foreign policy challenges — including Afghanistan, Iran, North Korea and his broader plans to limit nuclear weapons.…

Mitch McConnell On Democrats: “If They Think It’s Bad Now, Wait ’Till Next year”

101220_mcconnell_ap_605

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, the man who said “the single most important thing we want to achieve” is to get Obama out of office, wants Democrats to know he will use everything at his disposal to thwart them.

“There’s much for them to be angst-ridden about,” McConnell said with a chuckle. “If they think it’s bad now, wait ‘til next year.”

And McConnell says he’s willing to talk to the president as long as the president agrees with him.

“If the president is willing to do things that we believe in, I don’t think we’re going to say, ‘No, …

Council Of Conservative Citizens Boycotts Movie Featuring Black God

340x_screen_shot_2010-12-20_at_10.09.30_pm

The Council of Conservative Citizens is promoting a boycott against Marvel Studios which it says has “declared war on Norse mythology.” Its movie, “Thor”, has a black actor playing God. (h/t Gawker)

Norse mythology gets a multi-cultural remake in the upcoming movie titled “Thor,” by Marvel studios. It’s not enough that Marvel attacks conservative values and promotes the left-wing, now mythological Gods must be re-invented with black skin.

It seems that Marvel Studios believes that white people should have nothing that is unique to themselves. An upcoming movie, based on the comic book Thor, will give Norse mythology an …
