South Dakota Lawmakers Want Bill Requiring Gun Ownership

Five South Dakota lawmakers want a law requiring citizens to own guns.
The bill, which would take effect Jan. 1, 2012, would give people six months to acquire a firearm after turning 21. The provision does not apply to people who are barred from owning a firearm.
Nor does the measure specify what type of firearm. Instead, residents would pick one “suitable to their temperament, physical capacity, and preference.”
The measure is known as an act “to provide for an individual mandate to adult citizens to provide for the self defense of themselves and others.”
It seems this is …

Barbara Bush is expected to formally endorse gay marriage Tuesday, in a break with father George W. Bush.
Ms. Bush, 29, has taped a video calling on New York to legalize gay marriage. A bill to do that was defeated in the state in 2009. She describes the issue as a matter of conscience and equality.
“I am Barbara Bush, and I am a New Yorker for marriage equality,” she says in the brief message, sponsored by an advocacy group. “New York is about fairness and equality. And everyone should have the right to marry the person that they love.”…

The right-wing meme that liberals in general — and President Obama in particular — don’t believe in “American exceptionalism” because they’ve never said that exact phrase can now be put to bed once and for all. President Barack Obama is the only president on record (records having been kept for 82 years) who has uttered the phrase “American exceptionalism.” Thanks to Robert Schlesinger at US News, we now have the facts. On April 4, 2009, Obama said the phrase that pays during a news conference in Strasbourg, France. Asked about American exceptionalism, he said:
I believe in American exceptionalism, …

Kelsey Grammer’s soon-t0-be-ex-wife Camille told Joy Behar that politics and television may have gotten in the way of their love life.
“We tried. We just didn’t mesh sexually,” she told Joy, when asked to explain her admission on ‘The View’ that she and Kelsey had not been intimate for more than two years before they separated.
“Was it his fault or your fault or both?” Joy asked.
“Could be both, but it was more on his end,” Camille said. Not only did Kelsey deny her sex, she added, but he also refused to cuddle with her–for a surprising reason.
“He …

Egyptians Can Tweet Without Internet Access
Google has an app that can convert a phone message to a tweet, so with no Internet access in Egypt, you can make a phone call and have the voice message converted to a text that can be sent via Twitter. Google explains:
We worked with a small team of engineers from Twitter, Google and SayNow, a company we acquired last week, to make this idea a reality. It’s already live and anyone can tweet by simply leaving a voicemail on one of these international phone numbers (+16504194196 or +390662207294 or +97316199855) and the service will instantly tweet …

The first United States senator to call for Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak to step down is Florida’s Bill Nelson. He’s not saying Mubarak should go immediately, but that he should commit to democratic elections where his name is not on the ballot.
To put real credibility into the promises of reform, President Mubarak should immediately submit to this core principle of democracy.
The next presidential election in Egypt is scheduled for September of this year. Right now, there are no term limits in Egypt’s constitution restricting Mubarak from running for re-election for the sixth time.
Mubarak must immediately open these …

The United States government has issued new dietary guidelines and wants half the population to drastically reduce salt intake.
For the first time, the Agriculture and Health and Human Services departments, which issue the guidelines every five years, are telling people who are 51 and older, all African-Americans and anyone suffering from high blood pressure, diabetes or chronic kidney disease to cut the amount of sodium they eat daily to little more than half a teaspoon.
That group includes about half of the population and those who are most at risk of having higher blood pressure due to the amount …

In Pensacola, Florida today, US District Judge Roger Vinson declared the individual mandate for health care in the Affordable Care Act unconstitutional. Vinson is a Reagan appointee.
With this ruling, and a similar one in December by Judge Henry Hudson in Virgina, it’s likely that the U.S. Supreme Court will be the final arbiter of whether ObamaCare stands. (Two other lawsuits–one in Michigan and one in Virginia–were thrown out by other federal district judges last year who disagreed with the constitutional challenge.)
Henry Hudson, the Virginia judge who ruled in favor of that state’s legal challenge, focused on whether Congress has the …
