AZ Rep Trent Franks Wishes There Had Been More Guns At Tucson Massacre

Rather than a sane call for gun control, Arizona Congressman Trent Franks believes more guns at the Tucson Safeway would have been better.
“I wish there had been one more gun there that day in the hands of a responsible person, that’s all I have to say,” Franks said, visibly irritated at a question about increased gun control.
The comment came as GOP lawmakers were being briefed by the FBI, sergeant at arms and leadership staff on security. Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) said House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) was taking the right steps, adding that law enforcement officials would later …

Given that she’s under federal investigation for alleged misuse of campaign funds, Taegan Goddard wonders if her new ChristinePAC is a way for her to pay the bills. The Sunlight Foundation reasons:
Despite this investigation O’Donnell is launching a Super PAC, ChristinePAC, to raise unlimited funds from donors and spend money in races across the country. The big problem with this Super PAC is that it looks very similar to the campaign that brought O’Donnell under federal investigation.
The most glaring issue is that, like O’Donnell’s campaign, ChristinePAC’s office address is O’Donnell’s home address (1242 Presidential Dr). One of the …

Newt Gingrich has some advice for one of his potential rivals for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.
“She’s got to slow down and be a lot more careful and think through what she’s saying and how she’s saying it,” Mr. Gingrich told George Stephanopoulos on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”
Gingrich refused to discount Palin.
“There’s no question that she’s become more controversial,” Mr. Gingrich said Tuesday on ABC. “But she is still a phenomenon. I don’t know anybody else in American politics who can put something on Twitter, or put something on Facebook, and automatically have it become a national …

Georgia’s “House of Mercy” homeless shelter kicked out two women they suspected of being gay. (h/t Think Progress)
Both women told the local news that they weren’t even gay, and one of them said she came from an abusive home. Elder Bobby Harris, the director of the organization, told the local press that he would welcome “non-practicing gay people,” but even if the residents were to engage in sexual behavior on their own time off the premises, they would be rejected.
The shelter’s director, Bobby Harris, has his reasons:
“We have little children here,” Harris explained.
One of …

Higher education is under a series of stresses that will force upon it massive changes in the decades ahead. The government is reducing funding for public institutions, where most college students attend. Meanwhile, the demand for a college education continues to increase, leading to a student body that is not as well prepared as the generations that preceded it. Have universities changed their pedagogy to deal with these new students?
Nearly half of the nation’s undergraduates show almost no gains in learning in their first two years of college, in large part because colleges don’t make academics …

As part of a documentary, two girls are seen scaling the fence between the U.S. and Mexico in 18 seconds.
“The Other Side of Immigration” is a critically-acclaimed film directed by Roy Germano about the conditions that drive Mexicans to illegally journey to the United States and the results of their displacement. This specific clip asks: “Are we getting our money’s worth? Is the border fence an effective deterrent?” and appears to argue that money could be better spent improving the lives of Mexicans to discourage them from crossing the border quickly and illegally.
The filmmakers explain the clip:
Since …

Joe Lieberman will not seek a fifth term in the United States Senate, giving Connecticut an opportunity for new national political faces.
With Lieberman out, the focus will turn to a very tightly contested Democratic primary between Secretary of State Susan Bysiewicz and Rep. Chris Murphy. Bysiewicz announced her candidacy Tuesday while Murphy was expected to formally enter the race within days. Rep. Joe Courtney has also said he is considering a candidacy.
For Republicans, Linda McMahon, who lost an open seat race to Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D) in 2010, is considering another bid. Former Rep. Rob Simmons is also …

Republican Senators become much less crazy when they leave office. Former Tennessee Senator and Majority Leader Bill Frist’s comments throughout the recent health care reform process perfectly illustrate that point. In late 2009, Frist injected himself into the debate by saying that while the bill was not perfect, he would vote for it if he were still in the Senate. Not only did Frist say he would vote for the bill, his criticisms where perfectly reasonable concerns also shared by progressives.
He argued that the bill “does not fundamentally change the incentives that providers now have …

Sargent Shriver, the founder of the Peace Corps, Head Start, VISTA, and the Special Olympics, father to Maria Shriver, and 1972 running mate with George McGovern for president, passed away at the age of 95.
Neither that (1972) defeat nor an ineffective run for president in 1976 diminished Shriver’s legacy as one of the nation’s leading peacemakers and anti-poverty warriors through the turbulent 1960s.
“I was deeply saddened to learn about the passing of Sargent Shriver, one of the brightest lights of the greatest generation,” President Obama said in a statement. “Over the course of his long and distinguished …

In an op-ed published in the Wall Street Journal, an executive order, and a presidential memorandum issued today, President Obama ordered federal agencies to reexamine their regulations and eliminate senseless and duplicative ones and to continue to use benefit cost analysis to make regulatory decisions. From the WSJ:
This order requires that federal agencies ensure that regulations protect our safety, health and environment while promoting economic growth. And it orders a government-wide review of the rules already on the books to remove outdated regulations that stifle job creation and make our economy less competitive. …
