Egyptian Police Use Tear Gas Labeled “Made In The USA”

ht_tear_gas_made_usa_110127_wmain

Tear gas canisters used by Egyptian police are labeled “Made in the USA.”

According to the canister labels, the tear gas is produced by Combined Systems International of Jamestown, Pennsylvania.

The company’s web-site says it sells “non-lethal weapons” to foreign governments, without specifying Egypt.

This can have an effect on demonstrators.

Egyptians who are part of the street demonstrations told ABC News that the evidence of the U.S.-made tear gas sends a powerful signal.

“The way I see it the U.S. administration supports dictators,” said Aly Eltayeb, 26, who has participated in the protests since Tuesday.

“The way tear gas …

Nevermind What They Said. Here Is The Real Republican Anti-Medicare Agenda

6a00d83451bb2969e20120a5c02dda970c-800wi

By Yashwanth Manjunath

One of the most curious arguments that Republicans made, and continue to make, against the Affordable Care Act is that it “cuts $500 billion dollars” from Medicare. It is curious that Republicans, so adamantly opposed to “government” health care and “socialized medicine,” chose to “defend” the largest single payer health care system in the world. It must be nice to live in a world where one can make ironic and illogical arguments on a daily basis and not be held accountable at all.

What Republicans don’t tell people is that the $500 billion in Medicare …

Amy Chua: Medusa Or Cassandra?

amy-chua-590ds011211

by Bruce Friedrich

Invoking Chua’s anecdote of throwing a birthday card back in her daughter’s face, Kolbert sums things up nicely: “For some time now, the U.S. has, in effect, been drawing crappy, smiley-face birthday cards and calling them wonderful. It’s made us feel a bit better about ourselves without improving the basic situation.”

Perhaps this one woman has taken things too far with her children, but much more concerning is how far our nation has gone in the opposite direction.

Paul Ryan’s Europe-Bashing Inaccurate And Makes Case For Progressives

images5

Paul Krugman explains how Rep. Paul Ryan’s GOP response, following the right-wing meme that Europe has deficit problems because of progressive policies, is just not true.

Mr. Ryan (pictured) made highly dubious assertions about employment, health care and more. But what caught my eye, when I read the transcript, was what he said about other countries: “Just take a look at what’s happening to Greece, Ireland, the United Kingdom and other nations in Europe. They didn’t act soon enough; and now their governments have been forced to impose painful austerity measures: large benefit cuts to seniors and huge tax increases …

Boehner’s Claim That Liberals Don’t Believe In “Exceptionalism” Disproved

State-of-the-Union-Address_30

I played clips on radio of House Speaker John Boehner’s claim about the left on Parker-Spitzer that “they refuse to talk about American exceptionalism” by playing parts of Obama’s State of the Union Address where he continually talked about American exceptionalism. He didn’t say the word “exceptional,” which annoyed Kathleen Parker and John Boehner.

Hawaii Bill Would Let Anyone Get Obama Birth Records For $100

A bill introduced in the Hawaii legislature would allow anyone who wants to see President Obama’s birth records to do so for a $100 fee.

The bill would change a privacy law barring the release of birth records unless the requester is someone with a tangible interest, such as a close family member.

The measure was introduced by five Democrats but has not yet been scheduled for a public hearing, a required step before it can move forward. A decision on considering the bill will be made by the House’s Democratic leadership and committee chairmen.

The idea behind the measure …

Wyoming Senate Passes Anti-Same-Sex Marriage Amendment

The Wyoming State Senate passed an Amendment to its constitution that would prohibit recognition of same-sex marriages from outside the state.

The vote was 20-10, the minimum two-thirds majority needed for constitutional amendments.

As it goes to the House, Senate Joint Resolution 5 also contains language to allow a future Legislature to recognize civil unions.

If the bill passes in the House, the amendment will be placed on the November 2012 general election ballot.…

Arizona Introduces Legislation Targeting Birthright Citizenship

KAVANAGH

Arizona Republicans would like to overturn the 14th Amendment which guarantees citizenship to anyone born in the U.S.  (h/t Charles Johnson)

State Rep. John Kavanagh (pictured) said Republicans would introduce two bills in the Arizona Legislature seeking to provoke a legal review of the 14th amendment to the Constitution, which anchors citizenship rights for the children of immigrants.

The 14th Amendment guarantees citizenship to “all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof.”

Just like the Arizona bill that requires law enforcement to stop anyone they suspect of being here illegally, this potential …

Jay Carney To Be New White House Press Secretary

Carney_Jay

Jay Carney, who most recently was communications director for Vice President Biden, and before that worked for Time magazine, will replace Robert Gibbs as White House Press Secretary.

The White House had made clear they were interested in tapping an outsider for the post — particularly after Bill Daley was tapped as the new chief of staff. It’s not clear whether the White House believes Carney to be an outsider as he has spent the last two years within the Administration.…
