Trying to soften what would be one of the nation’s strictest anti-abortion laws, Indiana state Rep. Gail Riecklen wants an exception in the bill introduced by Rep. Eric Turner that would make abortions illegal after 20 weeks. Riecklen’s exception would be for women who are victims of rape or incest. Turner thinks that creates a loophole that would have women claiming rape or incest just to get abortions. (h/t Think Progress)
TURNER: I just want you to think about this, in my view, giant loophole that could be created where someone who could — now i want to be careful, I don’t want to disparage in any way someone who has gone through the experience of a rape or incest — but someone who is desirous of an abortion could simply say that they’ve been raped or there’s incest.
