The American Family Association’s Bryan Fischer believes the First Amendment and the Constitution, for that matter, don’t apply to Muslims (h/t RightWingWatch).
The First Amendment was written by the Founders to protect the free exercise of Christianity. They were making no effort to give special protections to Islam…We actually at the time were dealing with our first encounters with jihad in the form of the Barbary Pirates…
Islam has no fundamental First Amendment claims, for the simple reason that it was not written to protect the religion of Islam. Islam is entitled only to the religious liberty we extend …

Lawmakers from both parties want a vote on whether to defund the Libya operation, and a vote could come as soon as next week. Adam at Plum Line notes that Speaker Boehner has walked a fine line.
It may also be in Boehner’s political interests to delay a vote. The administration is clearly trying to hand off administration of the no-fly zone to one of its coalition partners, it has continued to define the mission as “limited,” even as it escalates, and the Libyan rebels may be too few to be able to truly capitalize on the assist from the …

Maine Governor Paul LePage has been the subject of mockery here before. But he may have topped his previous low of not understanding the difference between politicians and civil servants. He has ordered the removal of a 36-foot mural honoring workers from the State Department of Labor lobby (h/t Laura Clawson).
According to LePage spokesman Dan Demeritt, the administration felt the mural and the conference room monikers showed “one-sided decor” not in keeping with the department’s pro-business goals.
“The message from state agencies needs to be balanced,” said Demeritt, adding that the mural had sparked …

Why is it that Republicans tend to favor policies that reduce voter registration, while Democrats do the opposite? The Texas House passed a bill, supported by Governor Rick Perry (pictured), requiring photo ID, and it is likely to hurt minority voter turnout. State Rep. Armando Martinez explains how this bill would “undermines every minority in this state.”

A woman on a New York City subway train, enjoying some take-out spaghetti, was harassed by another passenger who thought it ill-mannered to dine in an underground train car. Someone began videoing mid-argument. It’s difficult to hear the video, but here is roughly what happened:
“What kind of animals eat on the train like that?” says the woman across the aisle.
The diner snaps back with an epithet, and the exchange quickly degenerates into a fistfight.
“Chill out!” shouts a man as he tries to pull apart the two combatants…
Some New York commuters called for a subway system …

A gay former advisor to Presidents Ford, Reagan and Bush 41, Fred Karger has formally filed with the FEC to seek the Republican nomination in 2012. Karger, who will be on radio with me Friday night, spoke with Nancy Cordes of CBS:
Karger says he’s an “outsider” but has “political experience.”
He is also the first openly gay presidential candidate. Cordes asked when so many of his fellow Republicans are opposed to gay rights and same-sex marriage why he would chose to run as a candidate of that same party.
“Being a gay Republicans is kind of an oxymoron,” he …

It’s unclear whether Michele Bachmann just wants to be in the limelight, or if she actually thinks she could be president. Yet, the tea partier is forming an exploratory committee to run for president in 2012. Bachmann told ABC News:
“I’m in for 2012 in that I want to be a part of the conversation in making sure that President Obama only serves one term, not two, because I want to make sure that we get someone who’s going to be making the country work again. That’s what I’m in for,” Bachmann said.
“But I haven’t made a decision …

Spc. Jeremy Morlock pleaded guilty to killing three Afghan civilians, saying, “the plan was to kill people” as part of a conspiracy with four other soldiers.
The 22-year-old Morlock is a key figure in a war crimes probe that has raised some of the most serious criminal allegations to come from the war in Afghanistan.
